While Yuan Emperor still held Ye, Wang Dao had Guo Pu cast lots; the hexagram ran Concord turning into Well: "A county northeast bearing the syllable Wu will yield bronze clappers proving Heaven's mandate.
After Sima Rui became Jin prince Guo Pu cast again; Rest turning into Opposition foretold: "Kuaiji will yield a triumph bell bearing an inscription dredged from household wells.
After the emperor ascended the throne, early in Taixing, people of Shan county in Kuaiji indeed found a bell in a well. It was seven cun and two fen long, its mouth was four and a half cun across, and on it were eighteen strange archaic characters saying "Kuaiji Peak Mandate"; the people of the time did not recognize the remaining characters.
The emperor prized him highly.
Later he again composed the Southern Suburb Fu; the emperor saw and praised it and appointed him Assistant in the Imperial Library.
This shows clearly that august Heaven protects the Metal house and loves Your Majesty like a son, repeatedly displaying disasters and anomalies with unceasing earnestness.
Your Majesty should turn inward in fear and reflection in order to answer the numinous rebuke.
Otherwise, I fear that in the future there will certainly be disasters of excessive yang and bitter rains, changes of collapse, thunder, and eclipses, and portents of mad and perverse creatures, adding to Your Majesty's labor of eating late.
I privately observe that Your Majesty is upright, bright, humane, and forgiving, embodying these things naturally; Heaven has granted You its fortune, and You possess all the central lands, opened renewed radiance when matters had grown dim, and enlarged the distant martial work of the four ancestors; auspicious spirits have shown omens, men and spirits have offered plans, and in responding to Heaven and following the time, nothing could surpass this.
Yet since Your Majesty ascended the throne, the transformation of restoration has not been made clear; though You personally manage ten thousand affairs and labor past sundown, dark beneficence has not reached the many lives, instruction has not covered the universe, lord and ministers are not at peace above, and the common people are not gathered below. Why are the songs of Hongyan not raised and the songs of the broad road not composed?
I privately grieve over this for Your Majesty.
To act by not acting and govern by not mastering is surely what Your Majesty embodies.
I beg Your Majesty to slightly retain Your divine discernment and grant examination to my words.
