天保二年，從駕至晉陽，於宮門外罵元韶曰：「爾不及一老嫗，背負璽與人，何不打碎之。 In Tianbao year two, while following the imperial carriage to Jinyang, he reviled Yuan Shao outside the palace gate: "You are worse than an old crone — you bore the seal on your back and handed it to another. Why not have smashed it?

元韶，字世胄，魏孝莊之侄。 Yuan Shao, styled Shizhou, was a nephew of Emperor Xiaozhuang of Wei.

初，尒朱榮將入洛，父劭恐，以韶寄所親滎陽太守鄭仲明。 Earlier, when Erzhu Rong was about to enter Luoyang, Shao's father feared for him and entrusted him to Zheng Zhongming, the administrator of Xingyang and a close associate.

仲明尋為城人所殺，韶因亂與乳母相失，遂與仲明兄子僧副避難。 Zhongming was soon killed by the townspeople. In the chaos Shao was separated from his wet nurse, and he fled with Zhongming's nephew Sengfu.

路中為賊逼，僧副恐不免，因令韶下馬。 On the road bandits pressed them hard. Sengfu feared they would not escape, so he ordered Shao to dismount.

韶逢一老母姓程，哀之，隱於私家十餘日，莊帝訪而獲焉，襲封彭城王。 Shao met an old woman surnamed Cheng, who pitied him and hid him in her home for more than ten days. Emperor Zhuang searched for him and found him, and Shao inherited the title Prince of Pengcheng.

魏室奇寶，多隨後入韶家。 Many rare treasures of the Wei imperial house came into Shao's household along with the empress.

韶性行溫裕，以高氏婿，頗膺時寵。 Shao was mild and generous by nature; as a son-in-law of the Gaos he enjoyed considerable favor.

文宣帝剃韶鬚髯，加以粉黛，衣婦人服以自隨曰：「我以彭城為嬪御。」 Gao Yang shaved Shao's beard, painted his face, dressed him in women's clothes and kept him at his side, saying, "I take Prince of Pengcheng as my consort."

文宣謂韶曰：「漢光武何故中興？」 Gao Yang asked Shao, "Why did Emperor Guangwu of Han restore the dynasty?"
