昂號慟嘔血，絕而復蘇，從兄彖嘗撫視抑譬，昂更制服，廬于墓次。 Ang cried out in grief until he vomited blood and lost consciousness, then came round again. His elder cousin Tuan came to comfort and restrain him, but Ang donned mourning dress once more and kept vigil in a hut beside the grave.

後與彖同見從叔司徒粲，粲謂彖曰：「其幼孤而能至此，故知名器自有所在。」 Later he and Tuan went together to see their collateral uncle, Minister of Education Yuan Can. Can told Tuan, "Orphaned so young, yet he has come to this — renown and high office will surely be his."

服未除而從兄彖卒。 Before he had finished mourning for his mother, his elder cousin Tuan died.

昂幼孤，爲彖所養，乃制棊服。 Ang had lost his father young and was raised by Tuan, so he put on the full mourning garments appropriate to a closer kin.

從兄提養訓教，示以義方，每假其談價，虛其聲譽，得及人次，實亦有由。 My elder cousin raised and taught me and showed me the right way. He lent me his standing in every discussion and built up my name, so that I could hold my own among others — and he had good reason to do so.

世祖雖可其奏，以彖言辭依違，大怒，使左丞王逡之奏曰： Emperor Wu approved the memorial but was furious because Can's wording was evasive, and he had Left Assistant Director Wang Qunzhi memorialize:

其晚，兼御史中丞臣袁彖改奏白簡，始粗詳備。 That evening your servant Yuan Can, acting Censor-in-Chief, revised the white brief; only then was it roughly complete.

厥初隱衞，寔彖之由。 At first it was hidden — truly Can's doing.

而阿昧苟容，輕文略奏。 Yet Can fawned and tolerated, thinning the memorial.

:　　彖才識疏淺，質幹無聞，憑戚昇榮，因慈荷任。 Can's talent is shallow, substance unknown; by marriage he rose, by mercy he held office.

臣等參議，請以見事免彖所居官，解兼御史中丞，輙攝曹依舊下禁止視事如故。 We ask Can be removed and relieved of acting censor, forbidden yet to view affairs as before.

彖匿情欺國，愛朋罔主，事合極法，特原收治，免官如案，禁錮十年。」 Can hid facts and deceived the state — the affair fits extreme law; specially pardoned to seizure; removal as memorialized, confinement ten years."
