隨道恭至義陽，會中山王英平義陽，獲焉。 He followed Daogong to Yiyang, and when Prince of Zhongshan Yuan Ying pacified Yiyang he was taken captive.

英素聞其名，以禮待接。 Yuan Ying had long heard his name and received him with courtesy.

亮性清靜，後隱居嵩山，感英之德，以時展覲。 Liang's nature was pure and quiet; later he withdrew to Mount Song, moved by Yuan Ying's virtue, and from time to time paid him respectful visits.

英亡，亮奔赴，盡其哀慟。 When Yuan Ying died, Liang rushed to the funeral and mourned with the deepest grief.

五年，魏中山王元英寇北徐州，圍刺史昌義之於鐘離，衆號百萬，連城四十餘。 In year 5 Yuan Ying, prince of Zhongshan, struck North Xuzhou and penned Chang Yizhi at Zhongli—"a million" men, forty-odd camps chained together.

元英大驚，以杖擊地曰：「是何神也！」 Yuan Ying was thunderstruck and beat the earth with his staff: "What sorcery is this!"

明旦，英自率衆來戰，叡乘素木輿，執白角如意麾軍，一日數合，英甚憚其強。 At first light Ying came in person; Rui sat in a plain wooden litter, white ruyi in hand, and fought several rounds in a day—Ying dreaded his power.

元英見橋絕，脫身遁去。 Yuan Ying saw the bridges destroyed and ran.

是時元英復追仙琕，將復邵陽之恥，聞叡至，乃退。 Yuan Ying chased Xianbi again to avenge Shaoyang; hearing Rui had arrived, he retreated.

魏中山王元英率衆十萬攻懸瓠，仙琕遣廣、會超等守三關。 Wei's prince of Zhongshan Yuan Ying led a hundred thousand men against Xuanhu; Xianpin sent Guang, Huichao, and others to guard the three passes.

十二月，英破懸瓠，執齊苟兒，遂進攻馬廣，又破廣，生擒之，送雒陽。 In the twelfth month Ying took Xuanhu, seized Qi Gou'er, then attacked Ma Guang and defeated him, capturing him alive and sending him to Luoyang.

五年，高祖以征役久，有詔班師，衆軍各退散，魏中山王元英乘勢追躡，攻沒馬頭，城內糧儲，魏悉移之歸北。 In year five Gaozu ordered withdrawal after the long campaign; as the hosts scattered, Yuan Ying of Wei pursued, seized Matou, and hauled every grain store north.

是冬，英果率其安樂王元道明、平東將軍楊大眼等衆數十萬，來寇鐘離。 That winter Ying came with Yuan Daoming, Yang Dayan, and hundreds of thousands to strike Zhongli.

英據東岸，大眼據西岸，以攻城。 Ying held the east bank, Dayan the west, and together they besieged the walls.

英與大眼躬自督戰，晝夜苦攻，分番相代，墜而復升，莫有退者。 Ying and Dayan fought in person, attacking day and night in relays; men fell from the walls and climbed back, none yielding.
