齊煬王憲字毗賀突，太祖第五子也。 Yuwen Xian, Prince of Qiyang the Flamboyant, styled Pihotu, was the fifth son of Yuwen Tai (the Grand Progenitor).

太祖嘗賜諸子良馬，惟其所擇。 Yuwen Tai once bestowed fine horses on his sons, each to choose as he wished.

太祖問之，對曰：「此馬色類既殊，或多駿逸。 Yuwen Tai asked him; he replied: "These horses differ in color and type; some may be exceptionally swift.

太祖喜曰：「此兒智識不凡，當成重器。」 Yuwen Tai rejoiced and said: "This boy's insight is extraordinary; he will become a pillar of the state."

後從獵隴上，經官馬牧，太祖每見駁馬，輒曰：「此我兒馬也。」 Later, while hunting on Longshang, he passed the government horse pasture; whenever Yuwen Tai saw a piebald horse he would say: "That is my son's horse."

初，平蜀之後，太祖以其形勝之地，不欲使宿將居之。 Earlier, after the pacification of Shu, Yuwen Tai, because of the region's strategic terrain, did not wish veteran generals to hold it.

太祖曰：「刺史當撫眾治民，非爾所及。 Yuwen Tai said: "A provincial governor should comfort the masses and govern the people—that is not within your reach.

太祖大悅，以憲年尚幼，未之遣也。 Yuwen Tai was greatly pleased, but because Xian was still young he did not send him.
