時太后議廢帝，立端王載漪子溥俊為穆宗嗣，患外人為梗，用榮祿言，改稱「大阿哥」。 The empress dowager then considered deposing the emperor and naming Prince Duan's son Pujun as heir to Muzong's line; fearing foreign interference, she followed Rong Lu's counsel and styled the boy "Great Elder Brother" instead.

二十六年，拳匪亂作，載漪等稱其術，太后信之，欲倚以排外人。 In the twenty-sixth year the Boxer uprising broke out; Prince Duan and others extolled their magic, the empress dowager trusted them, and hoped to use them to expel foreigners.

榮祿不能阻，載漪等益橫，京師大亂，駢戮忠諫大臣。 Rong Lu could not restrain them; Prince Duan's faction grew ever more arrogant; the capital descended into chaos, and loyal ministers who remonstrated were slaughtered in groups.

方太后議廢帝，立端王載漪子溥儁為「大阿哥」，桐主之甚力，實皆豫師本謀也。 During the debate over deposing the emperor and elevating Prince Duan's son Pujun as "Great Heir Apparent," Xu Tong pushed hard for it—the scheme was Yu Shi's in essence.

既而桐被命照料，益親載漪。 Once Xu Tong was charged with supervising the boy, he grew even closer to Prince Duan.

各國不慊載漪等所為，漪恚甚，圖報復。 The foreign powers were displeased with what Prince Duan and his circle had done; furious, he sought revenge.

二十六年，義和拳起釁仇外，載漪大喜，導之入都。 In 1900, when the Boxers stirred up hatred of foreigners, Prince Duan was delighted and ushered them into Beijing.

載漪等復疏言：「雪恥強國，在此一舉！」 Prince Duan and his allies memorialized again: "National humiliation can be wiped away and the state strengthened in this single stroke!"

至則謁端王載漪、莊王載勛、大學士剛毅，盛言拳民忠勇得神助。 In Beijing he visited Prince Duan, Prince Zhuang, and Grand Secretary Gang Yi, praising the militia's loyalty, courage, and supernatural aid.

載漪既用事，陰謀廢立，慮外人為梗，聞拳民有神勇，仇西教，欲倚以集事，召入京，遂縱恣不可制。 Once Zaiyi was in charge he plotted deposition and enthronement in secret, fearing foreign interference; told the Boxers were supernaturally brave and hated Christianity, he meant to use them to carry out his plan, called them to Beijing, and they soon could not be restrained.

而載漪等主戰甚力，在廷大臣率依違不決。 But Zaiyi and his party argued fiercely for war, and most ministers at court vacillated without a decision.

太后聞之動容，而載漪等斥為邪說。 The Empress Dowager was visibly moved, but Zaiyi and his party called it pernicious talk.
