年十八從軍，初隸王珍部下，後從曾國荃援江西，隸吉字營。
He joined the army at eighteen, first under Wang Zhen, then with Zeng Guoquan’s relief force in Jiangxi, where he was assigned to the Jizi Battalion.
咸豐八年，戰吉安南門外，國荃受重創，臣典大呼挺矛進，追殺至永豐、新淦。
In the eighth year of Xianfeng, at the battle outside Ji’an’s south gate, Guoquan was badly wounded; Chendian charged forward spear in hand with a great shout and drove the pursuit all the way to Yongfeng and Xin’gan.
國荃奇其勇，超擢寶慶營守備。
Impressed by his courage, Guoquan skipped the usual steps and made him garrison commander of the Baqing Battalion.
