鎮江都統趙勝辟為計議官，時李全寇鹽城，攻海陵，勝出戍揚州，屬官多憚從行，霆慨然曰：「此豈臣子辭難之日！」 Zhenjiang commander-in-chief Zhao Sheng recruited him as planning official. At the time Li Quan raided Yancheng and attacked Hailing, and Sheng went out to garrison Yangzhou; many subordinate officials dreaded accompanying him, but Ting said indignantly, “Is this a day for a subject to shrink from danger!”

勝次第出城接戰，霆必身先士卒，大小十八戰，無一不利。 As Sheng went out of the city in succession to engage the enemy, Ting always put himself before the soldiers; in eighteen battles large and small, none went badly.
