鄭阮，洺州人也。 Zheng Ruan was a native of Mingzhou.

少為本部牙將，唐莊宗略地山東，以阮首歸義旗，繼遷軍職。 In youth he served as a military adjutant of his circuit. When Emperor Zhuangzong of Tang conquered eastern Shandong, Ruan was the first to rally to the loyalist cause and thereafter rose through military ranks.

及明宗即位，擢阮至鳳翔節度副使。 When Mingzong took the throne, Ruan was promoted to deputy military governor of Fengxiang.

會末帝鎮其地，阮稍狎之。 When the Last Emperor governed the region, Ruan grew somewhat familiar with him.

末帝嗣位，以阮為趙州刺史。 When the Last Emperor succeeded to the throne, he appointed Ruan prefect of Zhao.

而阮性貪濁，民間細務，皆密察而紀之，令納賂以贖罪。 But Ruan was greedy and corrupt. He secretly investigated and recorded every petty matter among the people and demanded bribes to redeem offenses.

有屬邑令，因科醵拒命，密以束素募人陰求其過，後竟停其職，人甚非之。 When a subordinate county magistrate refused a levy assessment, Ruan secretly hired men with cloth bribes to find his faults; the magistrate was eventually removed from office, to widespread condemnation.

又嘗以郡符取部內兇肆中人隸其籍者，遣於青州，舁喪至洺，郡人憚其遠，願輸直百緡以免其行，阮本無喪，即受直放還。 He also once used a prefectural order to take a registered man from an undertaker's shop in his territory and send him to Qingzhou to carry a coffin back to Ming. Dreading the distance, the people offered one hundred strings of cash to be spared the journey. Ruan had no bereavement of his own, yet accepted the payment and released the man.

高祖建義入洛，阮自郡來朝，旋為本州指揮使石重立所殺，舉族無孑遺。 When Gaozu raised the righteous cause and entered Luoyang, Ruan came from his prefecture to court and was soon killed by Shi Chongli, commander of his native prefecture, with his entire clan wiped out to the last.
