尋隨周文育於南江拒蕭勃，恆為前軍。 Soon he followed Zhou Wenyü on the Southern River against Xiao Bo and always led the van.

文育又命鐵虎偏軍，於苦竹灘襲勃前軍歐陽頠。 Wenyü also sent Tiehu with a detached column to hit Bo's vanguard Ouyang Hui at Kuchu Ford.

又隨文育西征王琳，於沌口敗績，鐵虎與文育、侯安都嵭為琳所擒。 He marched west again with Wenyü against Wang Lin. At Dankou the army was broken, and Tiehu, Wenyü, and Hou Andu were all captured.

琳引見諸將，與之語，唯鐵虎辭氣不屈，故琳盡宥文育之徒，獨鐵虎見害，時年四十九。 Lin called the generals before him. Only Tiehu answered without bending. Lin spared Wenyü and the rest but put Tiehu to death. He was forty-nine.

亦隨文育西征王琳，於沌口軍敗，明力戰死之，贈使持節、征西將軍、郢州刺史。 He too followed Wenyü west against Wang Lin. At Dankou the army was broken; Ming fought to the death. He was posthumously given the staff of authority, made general who pacifies the west, and inspector of Yingzhou.

熊曇朗之殺周文育，據豫章，將兵萬餘人襲敷，徑至城下，敷與戰，大敗之，追奔五十餘里，曇朗單馬獲免，盡收其軍實。 Xiong Tanlang killed Zhou Wenyü, held Yuzhang, and struck Fu with more than ten thousand men, coming straight to the walls. Fu fought him, routed him, and chased him fifty li. Tanlang escaped on one horse; all his stores fell to Fu.

紹泰中，都督周文育出鎮南豫州，不知書疏，乃以山才為長史，政事悉以委之。 In the Shaotai era Commander Zhou Wenyu took up his post at South Yuzhou. Unable to manage documents himself, he made Shancai his chief clerk and left all administration to him.

文育南討，剋蕭勃，擒歐陽頠，計畫多出山才。 When Wenyu marched south he defeated Xiao Bo and captured Ouyang Yi; most of the plans were Shancai's.

及文育西征王琳，留山才監江州事，仍鎮豫章。 When Wenyu marched west against Wang Lin he left Shancai to oversee Jiangzhou and continued to hold Yuzhang.

文育與侯安都於沌口敗績，余孝頃自新林來寇豫章，山才收合餘眾，依于周迪。 Wenyu and Hou Andu were beaten at Dundu. Yu Xiaoxu came from Xinlin to strike Yuzhang. Shancai gathered the remnant army and joined Zhou Di.

文育重鎮豫章金口，山才復為貞威將軍、鎮南長史、豫章太守。 When Wenyu again held the Jin Ford of Yuzhang in force, Shancai was again made general of manifest prestige, chief clerk to the pacifier of the south, and administrator of Yuzhang.

文育為熊曇朗所害，曇朗囚山才等，送于王琳。 Wenyu was killed by Xiong Tanlang. Tanlang imprisoned Shancai and his party and sent them to Wang Lin.

永定二年，高祖命質率所部踰嶺出豫章，隨都督周文育以討王琳。 In the second year of Yongding (558) the Founder ordered Zhi to lead his command over the mountains into Yuzhang and follow Commander Zhou Wenyu against Wang Lin.

質與琳素善，或譖云於軍中潛信交通，高祖命周文育殺質，文育啟請救之，獲免。 Zhi and Lin had long been friends. Some accused him of secret correspondence with Lin in the field. The Founder ordered Zhou Wenyu to execute him; Wenyu pleaded for his life and he was spared.

高祖誅王僧辯，乃遣周文育輕兵襲載，未至而載先覺，乃嬰城自守。 After the Founder killed Wang Sengbian he sent Zhou Wenyü with light troops against Zai. Zai saw it coming first and shut the city to resist.

文育攻之甚急，載所屬縣卒並高祖舊兵，多善用弩，載收得數十人，繫以長鎖，命所親監之，使射文育軍，約曰十發不兩中者則死，每發輒中，所中皆斃。 Wenyü attacked hard. Zai's county levies were many of the Founder's old soldiers and crack crossbowmen. He took several dozen, chained them in a row, set trusted men over them, and made them shoot at Wenyü's host on pain of death if they missed twice in ten tries. Every bolt found its mark and every man hit went down.

文育軍稍卻，因於城外據水立柵，相持數旬。 Wenyü's men gave ground. He threw up a river palisade outside the walls, and the two sides stood off for weeks.

高祖聞文育軍不利，乃自將征之，剋其水柵。 Hearing Wenyü was losing, the Founder came in person, stormed the river camp, and broke it.

文帝之討張彪也，沈泰等先降，文帝據有州城，周文育鎮北郭香 When Emperor Wen campaigned against Zhang Biao, Shen Tai and others had already surrendered. Emperor Wen held the prefectural city, and Zhou Wenyü garrisoned north of the city at Xiang

[1]張彪自剡縣夜還襲城，文帝自北門出，倉卒闇夕，軍人擾亂，文育亦未測文帝所在，唯子高在側，文帝乃遣子高自亂兵中往見文育，反命酬答，於闇中又往慰勞眾軍。 [1] Zhang Biao returned by night from Shan county to storm the city. Emperor Wen slipped out the north gate. In the sudden dark the troops panicked. Wenyü did not know where Emperor Wen was—only Zigao stood beside him. Emperor Wen sent Zigao through the chaos to Wenyü to bring back his orders, then go again in the dark to steady the army.

文帝散兵稍集，子高引導入文育營，因共立柵。 Emperor Wen’s scattered men slowly gathered. Zigao led him into Wenyü’s camp and together they threw up palisades.

遣晉陵太守周文育率軍援長城。 Jinling administrator Zhou Wenyu was sent with troops to relieve Changcheng.

二月庚戌，遣周文育、陳蒨襲會稽，討彪。 On gengxu in the second month Zhou Wenyu and Chen Qian were sent to strike Kuaiji and suppress Biao.

遣周文育、侯安都衆軍，據梁山拒之。 Zhou Wenyu and Hou Andu were sent with the main armies to hold Liang Mountain against them.
