寶少事朱瑾為牙將，瑾之失守於兗也，寶與瑾將胡規、康懷英歸汴梁，皆擢任之。 In youth Yan Bao served Zhu Jin as a guard officer. When Jin lost Yanzhou, Bao went with Jin's officers Hu Gui and Kang Huaiying to Bianliang, and the Liang court promoted them all.
