楚相子常欲之，不與。 The Chu prime minister Zi Chang coveted it, but the Duke of Cai refused to give it to him.

子常讒蔡侯，留之楚三年。 Zi Chang slandered the Duke of Cai and kept him detained in Chu for three years.

蔡侯知之，乃獻其裘於子常； The Duke of Cai learned of it and then offered his fur coat to Zi Chang;

子常受之，乃言歸蔡侯。 Zi Chang accepted it and then spoke to have the Duke of Cai returned.
