Emperor Shizong (Yongzheng), temple name Yinzhen, was Kangxi's fourth son. His mother was Empress Xiaogongren (Uya). Portents attended his birth; he was tall and dignified in manner. In Kangxi year 37 he received the rank of beile. In year 48 he became Prince Yong.

In month 11 of Kangxi 61, as Kangxi lay ill at Changchun Garden, Yinzhen was sent to offer the suburban sacrifice at the Round Altar. On jiawu day, with Kangxi near death, Yinzhen was called to the fasting palace and proclaimed heir. Kangxi died. On xinchou day Yinzhen took the throne; the next year began the Yongzheng reign. Yinsi, Yinxiang, Ma Qi, and Longkodo were put in charge of government. Yinti, Pacification General on the western frontier, was recalled to Beijing. Bai Huang of the Board of War was ordered to assist the Grand Secretariat. Yang Zongren became Huguang governor-general; Nian Xiyao served as acting Guangdong governor.

In the twelfth month, on wuwu day, provincial tribute offerings were stopped. On renxu day, Yinsi became Prince Lian, Yinxiang Prince Yi, Yintao Prince of Lu, and Hongxi—Yinreng's son—Prince of Li. Sacrificial regulations for the Temple of Former Emperors were revised. On guihai day, an edict urged swift completion of the Gujin Tushu Jicheng encyclopedia. Yanxin became Xi'an general and acting Pacification General. On jiazi day, provinces were given three years to cover warehouse shortfalls or face punishment. Funing'an became Grand Secretary; Longkodo, Minister of Personnel; Yinsi managed the Clansmen Board. On renshen day, Zhang Tingyu became Minister of Rites. Ma Qi received a second-rank earldom and the honor name Dunhui.

On New Year's day of Yongzheng 1, eleven admonitory edicts went out to every level of civil and military official. On bingxu day, the seasonal offering was made at the Imperial Ancestral Temple. On xinmao day, the Emperor prayed for grain to Heaven. On renyin day, Kangxi's parting gifts of bow and quiver were bestowed on senior field commanders. Tao Lai and Zhang Tingshu were demoted for freeing Chen Menglei's sons during his trial. On jiachen day, Hongshu and Hongchun, sons of Prince Chun, became eldest son and beizi. On yisi day, Grand Secretary Wang Yan retired with approval.

On the first of the second month, Foge and Li Tingyi became Ministers of Justice. On renzi day, Zhang Penghe became Grand Secretary. On yimao day, Yinlu succeeded Prince Zhuang Boguoduo by adoption. Qiulin, Boguoduo's nephew, received the rank of beile. On gengshen day, Prince Yintang was publicly rebuked. On yichou day, Yanxin was raised to beizi. Rules were set for ministry clerks to return home after passing service review. One censor each day was required to submit a folded memorial. On xinwei day, Yi Zhaoxiong became Fuzhou general. Zhao Zhiyuan left office; Li Weijun became Zhili governor. On jimao day, Alana reported submission of the Lobnor Muslims.

In the third month, on jiashen day, the Chamdo garrison in Tibet was recalled. Longkodo, Ma Qi, and Nian Gengyao received the rank of Grand Guardian. Provincial governors were told to recommend advisers in memorials. Nian Gengyao was made a third-rank duke. On renchen day, Yuele's grandsons and their sons were sent to Mukden and removed from the clan rolls.

In the fourth month, Kangxi's coffin was placed in the mourning hall; Yinti was left to guard it. On bingchen day, Yinxiang took charge of the Board of Revenue; his son Hongchang became beizi. Manchu translation tracks were added to the provincial and metropolitan exams. On yichou day, the office of the Daily Records was restored. The seventeenth brother, Yinzhi, became Prince of Guo. On dingmao day, the Emperor heard affairs at the Gate of Heavenly Purity for the first time. Three admonitory proclamations were issued to the highest civil and military ministers. On bingzi day, Yinwu was raised from commandery prince to full prince. Regional commanders were required to report by folded memorial.

The Emperor refused: local officials need breathing room to govern well; they cannot be forced to pay off someone else's debts. The edict continued. On yiyou day, Hongxi was ordered to reside at Zhengjiazhuang. On dingyou day, Xu Yuanmeng served as acting Grand Secretary. On xinchou day the Emperor's mother, Empress Dowager Renshou, died; her coffin rested at Ningshou Palace. Yinti was raised to Prince of Xun.

In the sixth month, on dingsi day, Zuo Shiyong became Han commander-in-chief. On jiwei day, five generations of Confucius' line received princely titles. On xinyou day, landless bannermen were sent to Rehe to farm. On renxu day, the Qinghai prince, defeated by Lobsang Danjin, fled in with his people and received imperial care. His nephew Galdan Tashi followed; both groups were settled at Suyou. On renshen day, Li Weijun was told that banner bullying of commoners in the capital region must be stopped. He was to act without regard to banner privilege or noble rank and report abuses secretly. The edict continued. On bingzi day, bannermen could sue commanders or princes who oppressed them.

In the seventh month, on jimao day, Chang Shou was dispatched to treat with Lobsang Danjin. On yiyou day, grain was purchased in Mukden, Jiangxi, and Huguang for transport to Beijing. On jichou day, excess charges on Jiangxi grain transport were forgiven. On renchen day, Manchu banner officer titles were renamed. On xinsi day, the autumn executions were halted. Shaoxing's hereditary beggar caste was struck from the registers. The Xiaojing yanyi was issued throughout the realm. On renyin day, Longkodo and Wang Yuling oversaw the Ming History; Xu Yuanmeng and Zhang Tingyu led the editorial staff.

In the eighth month, on dingsi day, Yang Lin and Kong Yuqi received southern posts. On jiazi day, the Emperor told his highest ministers that the succession should have been settled earlier. Last November's choice was made in a moment of crisis. Kangxi's wisdom surpassed his own. He had written the heir's name, sealed it in a casket behind the "Upright and Illuminating" plaque, and bade them remember. The edict continued. On gengwu day, Chang Shou reported that Lobsang Danjin refused negotiation at Qinghai. Nian Gengyao was ordered to ready his forces. On xinwei day, the Emperor went to the tombs.

Work on revising the legal code was ordered. On bingshen day, Alana became Mongol commander-in-chief.

On bingxu day, Nian Gengyao reported Yang Jinxin's victory at Zhuanglang, with hundreds of rebels slain. The memorial received imperial praise. On xinchou day, at the winter solstice, the Emperor sacrificed to Heaven at the Circular Mound, with the Kangxi Emperor as associate spirit.

On the first of the twelfth month, Wu Erzhan and others were barred from inheriting the Prince of An title and lost their attached commanders for disloyalty. On xinyou day, Nian Gengyao reported an attack; Assistant Commander Sun Jizong drove the raiders off. Westerners were settled at Macao, the Catholic church was turned into a public hall, and conversion was forbidden. On dingmao day, Empress Nara was installed, with Noble Consort Nian, Honored Consort Xi Niuhuru, and Pure Concubine Yu Geng. On jiaxu day, the Emperor performed the collective ancestral sacrifice.

Tax relief was granted for disaster areas across forty-nine districts in Zhili, Jiangnan, and other provinces. Korea and Ryukyu paid tribute. The census counted 25,326,270 households and 480,557 persons registered after the perpetual no-new-levy rule. Land tax yielded 30,223,943 taels and a fraction. The salt levy brought 4,261,933 taels and a fraction. Coin was cast to the amount of 499,200 and a fraction.

In the second year, on the first day of spring, the Emperor offered grain and meat to Heaven, with the Kangxi Emperor as associate spirit. Grand Secretary Tulai was ordered to share in the ancestral temple offering. Chang Shou came back from Lobsang Danjin and was imprisoned at Xi'an. On dinghai day, Yue Zhongqi became Valiant and Majestic General with sole command in Qinghai. On dingyou day, Gao Qipei became Han Banner commander-in-chief. On gengzi day, a Confucian temple was erected at Guihua Town.

On wuwu day, Yue Zhongqi reached Qinghai, seized Alibutan Wenbu and two other captives, and gathered fleeing tribes. An edict ended the Altai and Ulan Gumu armies now that Qinghai was nearly pacified and Tsewang Arabtan had submitted. On xinyou day, the court altered the ritual wording for the imperial visit to the National University. On guihai day, the Emperor ploughed the sacred field three furrows and then one more. On jiazi day, districts were told to honor elderly farmers with official caps. Nian Gengyao reported Jiang Bing's suppression of the Agang tribes and his promotion to surveillance commissioner. On bingyin day, Gao Qizhuo reported the submission of the Zhongdian tribes. On gengwu day, the Emperor prayed for rain at Black Dragon Pool.

On dingchou day, the court sacrificed at the Temple of Former Dynasties' Emperors. On gengchen day, the Emperor paid his respects at the imperial tombs. Yue Zhongqi reached the rebel stronghold; Lobsang Danjin fled, his mother was taken, and Qinghai was pacified. Nian Gengyao became a first-rank duke, Yue Zhongqi a third-rank duke, and two hundred thousand taels rewarded the troops. On yiyou day, at Qingming, the Emperor went to Jing Mausoleum for the spreading-earth rite. On dinghai day, the Emperor returned to the palace.

In the intercalary fourth month, revision of the Comprehensive Statutes continued. On bingxu day, Ji Zengyun became deputy director-general of waterways. On dingyou day, Sudan became Mongol commander-in-chief. On guiwei day, three Qinghai rebel leaders were brought to Beijing in cangues and presented at the Meridian Gate.

On the first of the fifth month, at the summer solstice, the Emperor sacrificed to Earth at the Square Mound, with the Kangxi Emperor as associate spirit. Beile Ablan was demoted again to defender-general of the state. On bingchen day, Beizi Sunu was stripped of rank for Prince Lian's faction and sent with his sons to the Right Wing. On xinyou day, an edict to the southwestern provinces said native chiefs often abused their subjects and killed at will. While the empire prospered, native peoples still suffered; the Emperor said his heart could not bear it. Chiefs were ordered to cease cruelty and honor the Emperor's care for all his subjects." On renxu day, Na Min became Manchu commander-in-chief. On wuchen day, Beizi Hongchun lost his rank.

In the sixth month, the Banners were forbidden to kill household members arbitrarily. On yiyou day, a victory stele was ordered at the Imperial University for the Qinghai pacification. On wuxu day, after fire at Qufu, the Emperor sacrificed to Confucius and ordered repairs. Beizi Yintao was demoted to defender-general of the state. Li Guangfu left office and Li Yongshao became Minister of Works.

In the seventh month, the Emperor issued his Treatise on Factions to the court. On renxu day, Ding Shou became garrison general at Altai. On guihai day, Deputy Commander Arana died on campaign and received a posthumous hereditary rank.

In the eighth month, examination avoidance rules were revised so related candidates were tested with others under separate examiners. On renwu day, autumn executions were halted for the year. On gengyin day, Tian Wenjing became acting Henan governor.

On guiwei day, the court ordered a Hall of Loyalty and Righteousness in Beijing. On yiwei day, Prince Abao of the Olot was granted Qinghai pasture. A Ningxia garrison was set up. On bingshen day, Minister of Justice Ersong'a was dismissed and sent to Mukden; his uncle Yinde inherited Duke Guoyi. Siam presented rice seed and fruit trees as tribute. Zhili gained provincial administration and surveillance offices, and Li Weijun became governor-general. On gengzi day, Yinde and Kuadai became senior chamberlains of the imperial bodyguard. On dingwei day, Sudan became Ningxia regional commander.

On wuxu day, the collective ancestral sacrifice was performed.

On dinghai day, an edict warned Nian Gengyao to pacify Qinghai remnants or face severe punishment should any flee to the Dzungars. On yiwei day, Erendai was dismissed for Prince Lian's faction and sent to Mukden; his brother Kuadai inherited a first-rank dukedom. On dingyou day, ministers heard Yintang's crimes proclaimed along with those of Yinsi, Yin'e, and Yinti.

In the third month, Ma Huibo became Guizhou provincial commander. Tsewang Arabtan sent tribute envoys. An Anhui education intendant was appointed. On guichou day, Grand Secretary Zhang Penghe died. Minister of Rites Zhang Boxing died. On dingsi day, four hundred fifty thousand taels of floating grain tax in Suzhou and Songjiang were forgiven. Manbao reported that seventy-four Taiwan aboriginal communities had submitted. On xinyou day, Nian Gengyao congratulated a celestial omen but reversed the phrase "diligent morning and evening" to "evening vigilance, morning diligence." The Emperor rebuked him: Nian Gengyao was not careless but refused to grant him the expected phrase of diligence. The Emperor said Nian Gengyao's Qinghai achievements might no longer be recognized. He called the lapse clearly disrespectful and ordered a plain reply." On yichou day, Prince Yi Yinxiang received a commandery prince for a son; Longkodo and Ma Qi gained hereditary offices. Prince Lian Yinqi was left out and sternly rebuked by edict.

Longkodo was sent to repair the wall at Alashan Mountain. On renxu day, Nian Gengyao was demoted to a supernumerary bannerman. On guihai day, Prince Yintang was stripped of his title for his crimes.

Nian Gengyao was ordered to die; Nian Fu was beheaded at once; other sons were exiled; kin were spared association guilt. Wang Jingqi was executed for slander on xinsi day." On guiwei day, Bayande became commander of the Tianjin naval camp. On renchen day, the court performed the seasonal temple offering.

On yiyou day, Prince Jian Yarjiang'a was demoted; Shenbaozhu inherited the title. On gengyin day, Zhang Tingyu, Jiang Tingxi, and Shen Mude received new posts.

On jihai day, Xibao reported Aqina's death in custody. On guichou day, Zhu Shi returned from mourning to the Grand Secretariat. On yimao day, Cha Siting was jailed for slander.

On wuchen day, the Emperor told ministers how Kangxi had ruled frugally for sixty years. Palace carpets lasted decades and remained intact. Imperial goods were plain, with few luxuries. Inspecting old furnishings from the summer retreat, the Emperor said his longing for Kangxi was endless. He wrote this to instruct his descendants." Prince Yu Guangning lost rank and was permanently confined on xinsi day." On jiashen day, the Sichuan-Shaanxi governor-general was ordered to Chengdu for the Puxiong Miao frontier. Ortai became Yunnan-Guizhou governor-general; Xiande became Hubei governor. On bingxu day, Ryukyu thanked the court for a plaque and sent tribute.

In the eleventh month, Grand Secretary Gao Qiwei was dismissed. On renzi day, Funing garrison service was rewarded with a first-class marquisate. On yimao day, Zhejiang examinations were suspended for corrupt scholarly habits and cheating.

In the twelfth month, ministers sought execution of Aqina and Sesheihei's families. The Emperor ruled that although Aqina and Sesheihei were traitors, kin were spared because rebellion was not fully proven. Sesheihei's wife was sent to her mother's house under confinement. Other dependents were placed under the Imperial Household Department for support. Poll-tax silver was merged into land tax collection in Henan, Shaanxi, and Sichuan." On yichou day, Xie Jishi impeached Tian Wenjing on ten counts; Tian was dismissed and exiled. On renshen day, Ortai reported twenty-one pacified Zhong Miao stockades and over thirty thousand mu of land surveyed. On renwu day, Li Fu, Yizhaoxiong, Liu Shishu, and Mao Wenquan received new appointments. On bingxu day, the court performed the seasonal temple offering.

The Eight Banners were ordered to surrender copper vessels within three years; concealment was punishable. On yisi day, Sun Zhu became acting Grand Secretary. On bingchen day, Shen Jinshi became Left Censor-in-chief and Vice Minister of Personnel.

On jiaxu day, the Emperor returned to Beijing. On jiashen day, the Emperor held the Classics lecture. On bingxu day, Li Fu was sent to Guangxi to seize the fugitive Luo Wengang. Luo Wengang surrendered of his own accord.

In the third month, on gengyin day, the metropolitan examination was set for the third month with ginger soup and charcoal supplied. Guanglu inherited the title Prince Yu. On wuxu day, the Emperor announced Cai Ting's crimes and ordered the Ministry of Punishments to detain and try him. On xinchou day, Fujian's maritime trade ban was opened. A favorite urged cutting back what prefectures and districts collected. He snapped: "You have never been a magistrate—how would you know their difficulty?" What words—proof he understood the essentials of rule!
