日食三統、四分，皆有推月食術，而無推日食術。 由日食或見或否，或淺或深，隨地而變。 不詳其數，立術綦難。 故自古以為尤異，每食，史冊必書。 後人推日食之術密矣，猶必書者，從其朔也。 其見於本紀，無食分及所次宿，備以入誌，言推步者考焉。
Both the Triple Concordance and Quarter-Remainder systems could predict lunar eclipses, yet neither offered a method for solar eclipses. A solar eclipse may or may not be visible, and may be slight or deep, all depending on where one stands. Without precise parameters, devising a reliable method is exceedingly hard. Hence antiquity treated eclipses as singular omens, and every eclipse was entered in the annals. Later astronomers refined solar-eclipse prediction to great precision, yet still recorded each event—honoring the ancient practice tied to the new moon. Eclipses noted in the Basic Annals without magnitude or lodge are gathered here in full for calendrical specialists to consult.

月五星淩犯掩距天官書言「相淩為鬥」，又云「七寸以內必之」，謂緯度相迫如交食也。 今法，兩星相距三分以內為淩，月與星相距十七分以內為淩，俱以相距一度以內為犯，相襲為掩。 欽天監每年預推月五星入此限者，繕冊進呈，本名淩犯書，雍正初年，改名相距書。 既憑占候，即課推步，各循本稱，並誌所在之宿。
On crossings, approaches, occultations, and close approaches of the moon and five planets: the Treatise on the Celestial Offices calls mutual crossing "combat," and says events "within seven inches" are certain—when latitudes close as in an eclipse. Current practice: two stars within 3 arc-minutes are in crossing; moon and star within 17 arc-minutes likewise; within 1 degree is an approach; full overlap is an occultation. Each year the Directorate forecast moon and planetary entries within these bounds, bound them in a register for the throne—first called the Book of Crossings and Approaches, renamed the Book of Close Approaches in early Yongzheng. Omens guided observation, observation tested the calendar: each event keeps its technical name, with the lodge noted.
