Preface: Ever since the Zhou established its kinsmen of the same surname, distant branches were appointed as bulwarks of the state; From the Han dynasty onward, the sons of sovereigns were invariably enfeoffed with princely titles. In tracing imperial lineages, one may discern the principle of honoring kinship. In the early Qing, enfeoffment had not yet been standardized; the Princes of Military Merit, Sagacious Wisdom, and Illustrious Merit all received high titles for their service. In the first year of Chongde, a nine-rank system of nobility was instituted. In the sixth year of Shunzhi, the system was redefined as twelve ranks from princes of the first and second rank down to gentry officers of the imperial clan, comprising enfeoffment for merit, enfeoffment by grace, and enfeoffment by examination. Only the eight princely houses of Rui, Li, Zheng, Yu, Su, Zhuang, Keqin, and Shuncheng, for their outstanding service in establishing the dynasty, enjoyed perpetual hereditary succession. Other princes of the first and second rank descended one rank per generation; some fell as far as defender or bulwark of the state yet still retained hereditary honors. When enfeoffment came from a collateral line, the rank descended to gentry officer of the imperial clan, and once the allotted generations were exhausted, succession ended. Descendants from Jingzu and above were called "Gioro," while those from Xianzu downward were called "imperial clansmen"; kinship was graded accordingly, ranks differed, and after several generations one might hold no more than a viscountage or barony. The original purpose of enfeoffment was to reward merit first and extend kinship second; hence some sons of the emperor received no more than beile, beizi, or duke. Compared with earlier dynasties, the practice was exceedingly cautious and strict. After Yongzheng, only Prince Yixian for his loyal service to the state, Prince Gongzhong for assisting in major affairs of government, and Prince Chunxian as the biological father of Emperor Guangxu received perpetual hereditary succession. By the dynasty's closing years, Prince Qing Yikuang had also received this exceptional honor. Among the rest of the ever-expanding imperial clan, enfeoffment by grace was granted only on occasions of great national celebration; and without proficiency in horsemanship and archery, they could not receive enfeoffment by examination. Yet more than two centuries after crossing the pass, literary pursuits had eclipsed martial ones, the bold spirit of the founding era was gone, and with each year's end examination fewer and fewer qualified for enfeoffment. Was this not the source of the dynasty's rise and decline, its strength and weakness? The descendants from Zhaozu downward are now arranged in a genealogical table, drawn from the imperial registers and sorted by branch and line. Those not holding one of the twelve ranks of enfeoffment are called "unattached imperial clansmen" and are treated only briefly here. Hence the Genealogical Table of Imperial Princes. Zhaozu Line
