宋宰輔年表，前九朝始建隆庚申，終靖康丙午，凡一百六十七年，居相位者七十二人，位執政者二百三十八人。後七朝始建炎丁未，終德祐丙子，凡一百四十九年，居相位者六十一人，位執政者二百四十四人。敘古曰：古之史法主於編年，至司馬遷作《史記》始易以新意，然國家世祚，人事歲月，散于紀、傳、世家，先後始終，遽難考見，此表之不可無，而編年不容於盡變也。厥後班固《漢史》乃曰《百官公卿表》，先敘官名、職秩、印授等，然後書年以表其姓名。歐陽修《唐史》又專以宰相名篇，意必有所在矣。宋自太祖至欽宗，舊史雖以《三朝》、《兩朝》、《四朝》各自為編，而年表未有成書。神宗時常命陳繹檢閱二府除罷官職事，因為《拜罷錄》。元豐間，司馬光嘗敘宋興以來百官公卿沿革除拜，作年表上之史館。自時而後，曾鞏、譚世勣、蔡幼學、李燾諸人皆嘗續為之。然表文簡嚴，世罕知好，故多淪落無傳。今纂修《宋史》，故一以實錄為據，旁搜博采紀、傳以為是表。其間所書宰輔官、職、勳、爵、館、殿、職、名，間有不同者，官制沿革有時而異也。然中書位次既止於參知政事，而樞府職序自同知、副使而下雖簽書、同簽書亦與焉者，皆執政也，故不得而略焉。夫大臣之用舍，關於世道之隆汙，千載而下，將使覽者即表之年觀紀及傳之事，此登載之不容於不謹也。表之所書，雖無褒貶是非於其間，然歲月昭於上，姓名著於下，則不惟其人之賢佞邪正可指而議，而當時任用之專否，政治之得失，皆可得而見矣。後之覽者，其必有所勸也夫，其亦有所戒也夫！

This table of Song chancellors covers the first nine reigns from Jianlong in the year gengshen of 960 through Jingkang in the year bingwu of 1126—167 years in all—in which seventy-two men held the chief ministership and 238 served as executive councillors. The last seven reigns run from Jianyan in the year dingwei of 1127 to Deyou in the year bingzi of 1276—149 years—with sixty-one chancellors and 244 executive councillors. The preface to antiquity observes that early historiography was chiefly annalistic until Sima Qian reshaped the craft in his 《Records》. Even so, a dynasty's span and the chronology of men's careers lie scattered across annals, biographies, and house histories, so that sequence and term are hard to trace at a glance—hence tables are indispensable, and the annal form cannot be abandoned entirely. Later, Ban Gu's 《History of Han》 included the 《Table of Officials and Ministers》, which first sets out titles, ranks, and seals of appointment and then lists names year by year. Ouyang Xiu's 《History of Tang》 likewise devotes a separate section to chancellors—a choice that surely answered to some need. From Taizu through Qinzong the older histories were compiled as separate works for the Three, Two, and 《Four Reigns》, but no complete annual table of ministers was ever produced. Under Shenzong, Chen Yi was repeatedly ordered to review appointments and removals in the Two Departments and compiled the 《Record of Appointments and Dismissals》. In the Yuanfeng period Sima Guang drafted an annual table tracing appointments and changes among Song officials from the founding of the dynasty and submitted it to the Historiography Office. Afterward Zeng Gong, Tan Shiji, Cai Youxue, Li Tao, and others each attempted continuations. Such tables are terse and austere, however, and few readers valued them, so most of these works were lost. In compiling the present 《History of Song》 we rely chiefly on the Veritable Records, supplementing them with material drawn from annals and biographies to form this table. Where titles, offices, honors, ranks, institute posts, and hall appointments recorded for chancellors differ from entry to entry, that reflects changes in the bureaucracy over time. Although the highest Secretariat rank entered here is Vice Grand Councillor, every post in the Bureau of Military Affairs from Associate Director and Deputy Commissioner down—including Signing Secretary and Associate Signing Secretary when held concurrently—counts as an executive minister and is therefore included. The appointment and removal of great ministers bears on whether an age flourishes or declines; centuries hence readers should be able to read this table's chronology against the annals and biographies, so the record must be compiled with care. The table offers no explicit moral verdict, yet with dates above and names below one may judge each man's character and also discern whether appointments were concentrated or shared and where governance succeeded or failed. Readers to come will surely find in it both encouragement and warning!
