咸安二年正月己酉，歲星犯填星，在須女。占曰：「為內亂。」五月，歲星形色如太白。占曰：「進退如度，奸邪息。變色亂行，主無福。歲星囚于仲夏，當細小而不明，此其失常也；又為臣強。」六月，太白晝見在七星。乙酉，太白犯輿鬼。占曰：「國有憂。」七月，帝疾甚，詔桓溫曰：「少子可輔者輔之；如不可，君自取之。」賴侍中王坦之毀手詔，改使如王導輔政故事。溫聞之大怒，將誅坦之等，內亂之應也。是月，帝崩。咸安二年五月丁未，太白犯天關。占曰：「兵起。」六月，庾希入京城。十一月，盧悚入宮，並誅滅。

On a jiyou day in the first month of Xian'an 2 (372 CE), Jupiter trespassed against Saturn in the Maiden and Female Servant asterisms. The omen was read as follows: "This foretells civil strife within the realm." In the fifth month, Jupiter's hue and appearance resembled Venus. The prognostication reads: "When it moves forward and back in accord with its proper course, wickedness abates. If its color shifts and it strays from its path, the sovereign will know no blessing. Jupiter, imprisoned in midsummer, ought to appear small and faint — this was its deviation from the norm; it also signified that the ministers had grown powerful." In the sixth month, Venus shone by day in the Seven Stars asterism. On a yiyou day, Venus trespassed against the Celestial Cart and Ghost asterism. The omen read: "The realm will face grave concern." In the seventh month the emperor's illness turned critical, and he addressed an edict to Huan Wen: "If any of my younger sons are fit to be aided, aid them; if none are suitable, take the throne yourself." Only because Attendant-in-Ordinary Wang Tanzhi destroyed the autograph edict was the command revised to follow the precedent of Wang Dao's regency. When Wen learned of this he flew into a rage and was on the point of putting Tanzhi and his allies to death — the fulfillment of the omen of internal disorder. That same month the emperor died. On a dingwei day in the fifth month of Xian'an 2, Venus trespassed against the Heavenly Gate asterism. The prognostication reads: "War will break out." In the sixth month Yu Xi marched into the capital. In the eleventh month Lu Song forced his way into the palace; both men were executed and their factions wiped out.

甯康二年正月丁巳，有星孛於女虛，經氐、亢、角、軫、翼、張。九月丁醜，有星孛於天市。十一月癸酉，太白奄熒惑，在營室。占曰：「金火合為爍，此災皆為兵喪。」太元元年五月，氐賊苻堅伐涼州。七月，氐破涼州，虜張天錫。十一月，桓沖發三州軍軍淮、泗，桓豁亦遣軍備境上。甯康二年閏月己未，月奄牽牛南星。占曰：「左將軍死。」三年五月，北中郎將王坦之薨。

On a dingsi day in the first month of Ningkang 2 (344 CE), a comet blazed in the Woman and Emptiness asterisms and swept through Root, Neck, Horn, Chariot Crossbar, Wings, and Extended Net. On a dingchou day in the ninth month, a comet appeared in the Heavenly Market enclosure. On a guiyou day in the eleventh month, Venus eclipsed Mars in the Encampment asterism. The prognostication reads: "When the metal and fire stars unite they flare — every such calamity foretells war and death in arms." In the fifth month of Taiyuan 1 (376 CE), the Di chieftain Fu Jian invaded Liangzhou. In the seventh month the Di overran Liangzhou and took Zhang Tianxi prisoner. In the eleventh month Huan Chong raised armies from three provinces and encamped them on the Huai and Si, while Huan Huo likewise dispatched forces to guard the frontier. On a jiwei day in the intercalary month of Ningkang 2, the moon eclipsed the southern star of Leading Ox. The prognostication reads: "The General of the Left will perish." In the fifth month of the third year, Grand General Who Pacifies the North Wang Tanzhi died.

晉孝武太元元年四月丙戌，熒惑犯南斗第三星。丙申，又奄第四星。占曰：「兵大起，中國饑。」一曰：「有赦。」八月癸酉，太白晝見在氐。氐，兗州分野。九月，熒惑犯哭泣星，遂入羽林。占曰：「天子有哭泣事，中軍兵起。」十一月己未，月奄左角。占曰：「天子有兵。」一曰：「國有憂。」三年六月，熒惑守羽林。占曰：「禁兵大起。」九月壬午，太白晝見在角，兗州分。元年五月，大赦。三年八月，氐賊韋鐘入漢中東下，苻融寇樊、鄧，慕容暐圍襄陽，氐兗州刺史彭超圍彭城。四年二月，襄陽城陷，賊獲硃序。彭超舍彭城，獲吉挹。彭超等聚廣陵三河眾五萬。於是征虜謝石次塗中，右衛毛安之、遊擊河間王曇之等次堂邑，發丹陽民丁，使尹張涉屯衛京都。六月，兗州刺史謝玄討賊，大破之，餘燼皆走。是時中外連兵，比年荒儉。是年，又發揚州萬人戍夏口。

On a bingxu day in the fourth month of Taiyuan 1, during the reign of Emperor Xiaowu of Jin, Mars trespassed against the third star of the Southern Dipper. On a bingshen day it eclipsed the fourth star as well. The prognostication reads: "War will erupt on a vast scale, and the heartland will know famine." Another interpretation holds: "An amnesty will be proclaimed." On a guiyou day in the eighth month, Venus shone by day in the Root asterism. The Root asterism corresponds to the territory of Yanzhou. In the ninth month Mars crossed the Weeping Star and then entered the Forest of Spears asterism. The prognostication reads: "The emperor will mourn; the central armies will mobilize." On a jiwei day in the eleventh month the moon eclipsed the Left Horn star. The prognostication reads: "The emperor will go to war." Another reading says: "The realm will face grave troubles." In the sixth month of the third year Mars lingered in the Forest of Spears. The prognostication reads: "The imperial guard will mobilize in force." On a renwu day in the ninth month Venus shone by day in the Horn asterism, which corresponds to Yanzhou. In the fifth month of the first year a general amnesty was proclaimed. In the eighth month of the third year the Di chieftain Wei Zhong drove into Hanzhong and swept east; Fu Rong attacked Fan and Deng; Murong Wei laid siege to Xiangyang; and the Di Governor of Yanzhou Peng Chao invested Pengcheng. In the second month of the fourth year Xiangyang was lost and the enemy took Zhu Xu prisoner. Peng Chao withdrew from Pengcheng and seized Ji Yi. Peng Chao and his allies mustered fifty thousand troops from the three Guangling commanderies. In response General Who Punishes Barbarians Xie Shi took position at Tuzhong, while Right Guard Mao Anzhi, Mobile Commander the Prince of Hejian Tan Zhi, and others encamped at Tangyi; levies were raised from the commoners of Danyang; and Intendant Zhang She was stationed to defend the capital. In the sixth month the Governor of Yanzhou Xie Xuan routed the enemy in a crushing victory, and every last remnant of their force scattered in flight. At that time war raged without cease at court and on the frontiers, and famine stalked the land year upon year. That same year another ten thousand men from Yangzhou were levied to garrison Xiakou.

太元四年十一月丁巳，太白犯哭星。占曰：「天子有哭泣事。」五年七月丙子，辰星犯軒轅。占曰：「女主當之。」九月癸未，皇后王氏崩。

On a dingsi day in the eleventh month of Taiyuan 4, Venus trespassed against the Weeping Star. The prognostication reads: "The emperor will mourn." On a bingzi day in the seventh month of the fifth year, Mercury crossed the Yellow Dragon asterism. The prognostication reads: "The empress will bear the omen." On a guiwei day in the ninth month Empress Wang died.

太元六年十月乙卯，有奔星東南經翼軫，聲如雷。《星說》曰：「光跡相連曰流，絕跡而去曰奔。」案占：「楚地有兵。」一曰：「軍破民流。」十二月，氐荊州刺史梁成、襄陽太守閻震率眾伐竟陵，桓石虔擊大破之，生禽震，斬首七千，獲生萬人。聲如雷，將帥怒之象也。七年九月，硃綽擊襄陽，拔將六百餘家而還。

On a yimao day in the tenth month of Taiyuan 6, a bolide streaked southeast through the Wings and Chariot Crossbar asterisms, thundering as it went. The Treatise on Stars explains: "A streak of light that leaves a continuous trail is termed a meteor; one whose trail breaks off and vanishes is termed a bolide." The omen was read as: "War will break out in the Chu territories." Another interpretation holds: "Armies will be shattered and the populace will scatter in flight." In the twelfth month the Di Governor of Jingzhou Liang Cheng and the Administrator of Xiangyang Yan Zhen marched against Jingling; Huan Shiqian routed them utterly, took Zhen alive, severed seven thousand heads, and captured ten thousand men. The thunderous roar symbolized the fury of commanders in the field. In the ninth month of the seventh year Zhu Chuo raided Xiangyang, carried off the families of more than six hundred officers, and withdrew.

太元七年十一月，太白晝見，在鬥。占曰：「吳有兵喪。」八年四月甲子，太白又晝見，在參。占曰：「魏有兵喪。」是月，桓沖征沔漢，楊亮伐蜀，並拔城略地。八月，苻堅自將號百萬，九月，攻沒壽陽。十月，劉牢之破堅將梁成斬之，殺獲萬餘人。謝玄等又破堅于淝水，斬其弟融，堅大眾奔潰。九年六月，皇太后褚氏崩。八月，謝玄出屯彭城，經略中州。十年八月，苻堅為其將姚萇所殺。

In the eleventh month of Taiyuan 7, Venus shone by day in the Dipper asterism. The prognostication reads: "The Wu region will know war and death in arms." On a jiazi day in the fourth month of the eighth year, Venus again shone by day in the Three Stars asterism. The prognostication reads: "The Wei territories will know war and mourning." That same month Huan Chong campaigned along the Mian and Han rivers, Yang Liang invaded Shu, and both seized cities and extended their holdings. In the eighth month Fu Jian took the field in person at the head of an army he claimed numbered a million; in the ninth month he stormed and took Shouyang. In the tenth month Liu Laozhi routed Fu Jian's general Liang Cheng and struck off his head, slaying and capturing more than ten thousand men. Xie Xuan and his allies then shattered Fu Jian's forces at the Fei River, struck down his brother Rong, and Fu Jian's vast army broke and fled in panic. In the sixth month of the ninth year the Empress Dowager Chu died. In the eighth month Xie Xuan advanced to encamp at Pengcheng and extend Jin control over the central provinces. In the eighth month of the tenth year Fu Jian was slain by his own general Yao Chang.

太元十年十二月己醜，太白犯歲星。占曰：「為兵饑。」是時河朔未一，兵連在外，冬，大饑。

On a jichou day in the twelfth month of Taiyuan 10, Venus trespassed against Jupiter. The prognostication reads: "This foretells war and famine." At that time the lands north of the Yellow River remained divided; armies campaigned without cease beyond the borders; and that winter famine struck with terrible force.

太元十一年三月戊申，太白晝見，在東井。占曰：「秦有兵，臣強。」六月甲午，歲星晝見，在胃。占曰：「魯有兵，臣強。」十二年，慕容垂寇東阿，翟遼寇河上，姚萇假號安定，苻登自立隴上，呂光竊據涼土。太元十一年三月，客星在南斗，至六月乃沒。占曰：「有兵。」一曰：「有赦。」是後司、雍、兗、冀常有兵役。十二年正月，大赦。八月，又赦。

On a wushen day in the third month of Taiyuan 11, Venus shone by day in the Eastern Well asterism. The prognostication reads: "Qin will go to war, and the ministers will grow powerful." On a jiawu day in the sixth month, Jupiter shone by day in the Stomach asterism. The prognostication reads: "Lu will know war, and the ministers will grow powerful." In the twelfth year Murong Chui invaded Dong'e, Zhai Liao harried the Yellow River frontier, Yao Chang proclaimed himself ruler at Anding, Fu Deng raised his standard on the Longshang plateau, and Lü Guang seized the Liang territories. In the third month of Taiyuan 11 a guest star blazed in the Southern Dipper and lingered until the sixth month before it disappeared. The prognostication reads: "War will break out." Another interpretation holds: "An amnesty will be proclaimed." Thereafter the provinces of Si, Yong, Yan, and Ji were continually embroiled in warfare. In the first month of the twelfth year a general amnesty was proclaimed. In the eighth month another amnesty followed.

太元十二年二月戊寅，熒惑入月。占曰：「有亂臣死，相若有戮者。」一曰：「女親為敗，天下亂。」是時琅邪王輔政，王妃從兄國寶以姻昵受寵。又陳郡人袁悅昧私苟進，交遘主相，扇揚朋黨。十三年，帝殺悅。於是主相有隙，亂階興矣。太元十二年十月庚午，太白晝見，在鬥。十三年閏月戊辰，天狗東北下有聲。十二月戊子，辰星入月，在危。占曰：「賊臣欲殺主，不出三年，必有內惡。」是月，熒惑在角亢，形色猛盛。占曰：「熒惑失其常，吏且棄其法，諸侯亂其政。」自是後慕容垂、翟遼、姚萇、苻登、慕容永並阻兵爭強。十四年正月，彭城妖賊又稱號於皇丘，劉牢之破滅之。三月，張道破合鄉，圍泰山，向欽之擊走之。是年，翟遼又攻沒滎陽，侵略陳、項。于時政事多弊，治道陵遲矣。

On a wuyin day in the second month of Taiyuan 12, Mars entered the moon. The prognostication reads: "Treacherous ministers will perish, and among the highest ministers some will be put to death." Another interpretation holds: "Women of the imperial clan will bring ruin, and the realm will descend into chaos." At that time the Prince of Langye held the regency, and the empress's cousin Wang Guobao won the emperor's favor through their family ties. Meanwhile Yuan Yue of Chen, advancing through covert intrigue, played sovereign and chief minister against each other and inflamed partisan factions. In the thirteenth year the emperor had Yue put to death. From that point a breach opened between emperor and chief minister, and the seeds of turmoil were sown. On a gengwu day in the tenth month of Taiyuan 12, Venus shone by day in the Dipper asterism. On a wuchen day in the intercalary month of the thirteenth year the Heavenly Dog omen in the northeast thundered. On a wuzi day in the twelfth month, Mercury entered the moon in the Rooftop asterism. The prognostication reads: "A rebel minister plots against the throne; within three years internal treachery will surely erupt." That same month Mars blazed in the Horn and Neck asterisms, its hue and brilliance unnaturally fierce. The prognostication reads: "When Mars strays from its proper path, officials will cast aside the law and regional lords will throw governance into chaos." Thereafter Murong Chui, Zhai Liao, Yao Chang, Fu Deng, and Murong Yong all raised armies and vied for dominance across the north. In the first month of the fourteenth year, rebel chieftains at Pengcheng again raised a standard at Huangqiu; Liu Laozhi routed and annihilated them. In the third month Zhang Dao overran Hexiang and invested Mount Tai; Xiang Qinzhi attacked and drove him back. That same year Zhai Liao again stormed Xingyang and swept through Chen and Xiang. By then government was riddled with corruption, and the foundations of orderly rule had crumbled.

太元十四年十二月，熒惑入羽林。乙未，月犯歲星。占並同上。十五年，翟遼陸掠司、兗，眾軍累討弗克。鮮卑又跨略並、冀。七月，旱。八月，諸郡大水，兗州又蝗。

In the twelfth month of Taiyuan 14, Mars entered the Forest of Spears asterism. On a yiwei day the moon trespassed against Jupiter. The omens were read as above. In the fifteenth year Zhai Liao harried Si and Yan without cease, and the imperial forces sent against him repeatedly failed to bring him down. The Xianbei likewise overran Bing and Ji. In the seventh month drought struck. In the eighth month floods ravaged commanderies across the realm, and locusts descended upon Yanzhou.

太元十五年七月壬申，有星孛於北河戒，經太微、三台、文昌，入北斗，長十餘丈。八月戊戌，入紫微，乃滅。占曰：「北河戒，一名胡門。胡門有兵喪。掃太微，入紫微，王者當之。三台為三公，文昌為將相，將相三公有災。入北斗，強國發兵，諸侯爭權，大夫憂。」十一月，太白入羽林。占曰：「天子為軍自守，有反臣。」二十一年九月，孝武帝崩。隆安元年，王恭、殷仲堪、桓玄等併發兵表誅王國寶，朝廷從而殺之，並斬其從弟緒，司馬道子由是失勢，禍亂成矣。

On a renshen day in the seventh month of Taiyuan 15, a comet blazed at the Northern River Guard, sweeping through the Supreme Palace Enclosure, Three Terraces, and Literary Glory asterisms and into the Northern Dipper, its tail stretching more than ten zhang. On a wuxu day in the eighth month it entered the Purple Forbidden Enclosure and then disappeared. The prognostication reads: "The Northern River Guard, also known as the Barbarian Gate, portends war and death in arms among the frontier peoples. Sweeping the Supreme Palace Enclosure and entering the Purple Forbidden Enclosure, the sovereign himself will bear the omen. The Three Terraces stand for the three highest ministers, Literary Glory for generals and chief ministers — generals, ministers, and the three highest offices will all know disaster. Its entry into the Northern Dipper means powerful states will mobilize, regional lords will fight for supremacy, and high ministers will be gripped by dread." In the eleventh month Venus entered the Forest of Spears. The prognostication reads: "The emperor will muster armies for his own defense; rebel ministers will arise." In the ninth month of the twenty-first year Emperor Xiaowu died. In Long'an 1, Wang Gong, Yin Zhongkan, Huan Xuan, and others all took the field and memorialized the throne demanding Wang Guobao's death; the court acquiesced and executed him along with his cousin Xu; Sima Daozi lost his grip on power from that moment, and the stage was set for catastrophe.

太元十六年十一月癸巳，月奄心前星。占曰：「太子憂。」是時太子常有篤疾。

On a guisi day in the eleventh month of Taiyuan 16, the moon eclipsed the anterior star of the Heart asterism. The prognostication reads: "The crown prince will be afflicted." At that time the crown prince was chronically gravely ill.

太元十七年九月丁醜，歲星、熒惑、填星同在亢氐。占曰：「三星合，是謂驚位絕行，內外有兵喪與饑，改立王公。」

On a dingchou day in the ninth month of Taiyuan 17, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn converged in the Neck and Root asterisms. The prognostication reads: "When the three stars converge, it is termed a disruption of the celestial order — war and famine will strike within and without, and new lords will be installed upon the throne."

太元十八年正月乙酉，熒惑入月。占曰：「憂在宮中，非賊乃盜也。」一曰：「有亂臣，若有戮者。」二十一年九月，帝暴崩內殿，兆庶宣言夫人張氏潛行大逆。于時朝政暗緩，不加顯戮，但默責而已。又王國寶邪狡，卒伏其辜。太元十八年二月，有客星在尾中，至九月乃滅。占曰：「燕有兵喪。」十九年四月己巳，月奄歲星，在尾。占曰：「為饑，燕國亡。」二十年，慕容垂遣息寶伐什圭，為圭所破，死者數萬人。二十一年，垂死，國遂衰亡。

On a yiyou day in the first month of Taiyuan 18, Mars entered the moon. The prognostication reads: "Trouble will strike within the palace walls — if not a traitor, then a thief." Another interpretation holds: "Rebellious ministers will arise, and some among the highest ministers will be put to death." In the ninth month of the twenty-first year the emperor died suddenly in the inner palace, and the populace openly charged that Lady Zhang had secretly committed regicide. At the time the court was too timid and indecisive to impose open punishment, contenting itself with private rebuke. Meanwhile Wang Guobao's treachery and cunning caught up with him, and in the end he paid for his crimes. In the second month of Taiyuan 18 a guest star blazed in the Tail asterism and lingered until the ninth month before it disappeared. The prognostication reads: "The state of Yan will know war and death in arms." On a jisi day in the fourth month of the nineteenth year the moon eclipsed Jupiter in the Tail asterism. The prognostication reads: "This foretells famine and the fall of Yan." In the twentieth year Murong Chui sent his son Murong Bao against Tuoba Gui; Gui routed him and tens of thousands perished. In the twenty-first year Murong Chui died, and the state thereafter withered toward extinction.

太元十九年十月癸醜，太白犯歲星，在鬥。占曰：「為饑，為內兵。鬥，吳、越分。」至隆安元年，王恭等舉兵顯王國寶之罪，朝廷赦之。是後連歲水旱民饑。

On a guichou day in the tenth month of Taiyuan 19, Venus trespassed against Jupiter in the Dipper asterism. The prognostication reads: "This foretells famine and civil war. The Dipper asterism corresponds to the territories of Wu and Yue." By Long'an 1, Wang Gong and his allies had taken the field to denounce Wang Guobao's crimes, and the court granted them amnesty. Thereafter floods and drought alternated year upon year, and the people starved.

太元二十年六月，熒惑入天囷。占曰：「天下饑。」七月丁亥，太白入太微。占曰：「太白入太微，國有憂。晝見，為兵喪。」九月，有蓬星如粉絮，東南行，曆女虛至哭星。占曰：「蓬星見，不出三年，必有亂臣戮死於市。」十二月己巳，月犯楗閉及東西鹹。占曰：「楗閉司心腹喉舌，東西鹹主陰謀。」是時王國寶交構朝政。二十一年九月，帝崩；隆安元年，王恭等舉兵，而朝廷戮王國寶、王緒。又連歲水旱，兼三方動眾，民饑。

In the sixth month of Taiyuan 20, Mars entered the Heavenly Granary asterism. The prognostication reads: "Famine will stalk the land." On a dinghai day in the seventh month, Venus entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure. The prognostication reads: "When Venus enters the Supreme Palace Enclosure, the realm will face grave concern. If it shines by day, war and death in arms will follow." In the ninth month a hazy star like drifting cotton floss moved southeast, sweeping from the Woman and Emptiness asterisms to the Weeping Star. The prognostication reads: "When the disheveled star appears, within three years rebel ministers will surely be put to death in the public square." On a jisi day in the twelfth month the moon trespassed against Key and Lock and the Eastern and Western Flavors stars. The prognostication reads: "Key and Lock govern the sovereign's inner counsellors and spokesmen; the Eastern and Western Flavors preside over covert intrigue." At that time Wang Guobao was manipulating court politics through secret machinations. In the ninth month of the twenty-first year the emperor died; in Long'an 1 Wang Gong and his allies took the field, and the court put Wang Guobao and Wang Xu to death. Floods and drought persisted year upon year, armies marched on three fronts, and the people went hungry.

太元二十一年三月，太白連晝見，在羽林。占曰：「有強臣，有兵喪，中軍兵起。」四月壬午，太白入天囤。占曰：「為饑。」六月，歲星犯哭星。占曰：「有哭泣事。」是年九月，孝武帝崩。隆安元年，王恭舉兵脅朝廷，於是中外戒嚴，戮王國寶以謝之。

In the third month of Taiyuan 21, Venus shone by day for many days running in the Forest of Spears. The prognostication reads: "Powerful ministers will arise, war and mourning will follow, and the central armies will mobilize." On a renwu day in the fourth month, Venus entered the Heavenly Storehouse asterism. The prognostication reads: "This foretells famine." In the sixth month Jupiter trespassed against the Weeping Star. The prognostication reads: "The court will mourn." In the ninth month of that year Emperor Xiaowu died. In Long'an 1 Wang Gong took the field to coerce the court; the realm was placed on full alert, and Wang Guobao was executed to placate him.

晉安帝隆安元年正月癸亥，熒惑犯哭星。占曰：「有哭泣事。」二月，歲星熒惑皆入羽林。占曰：「軍兵起。」四月丁醜，太白晝見，在東井。秦有兵喪。是月，王恭舉兵，內外戒嚴。尋殺王國寶等。六月，羌賊攻洛陽，郗恢遣兵救之。姚萇死，子略代立。什圭自號於中山。隆安元年六月庚午，月奄太白，在太微端門外。占曰：「國受兵。」乙酉，月奄歲星，在東壁。占曰：「為饑。衛地有兵。」八月，熒惑守井鉞。占曰：「大臣有誅。」二年六月戊辰，攝提移度失常，歲星晝見在胃。胃，兗州分。是年六月，郗恢遣鄧啟方等以萬人殘虜於滑台。滑台，衛地也。啟方等敗而還。九月，王恭、庾楷、殷仲堪、桓玄等並舉兵表誅王愉、司馬尚之兄弟。於是內外戒嚴，大發民眾。仲堪軍至尋陽，禽江州刺史王愉，楷將段方攻尚之于楊湖，為所敗，方死。王恭司馬劉牢之反恭，恭敗。桓玄至白石，亦奔退。仲堪還江陵。三年冬，荊州刺史殷仲堪為桓玄所殺。

On a yiyou day the moon eclipsed Jupiter in the Eastern Wall asterism. The prognostication reads: "This foretells famine. The Wei territories will see war." In the eighth month Mars lingered at the Well Axe star. The prognostication reads: "High ministers will be put to death." On a wuchen day in the sixth month of the second year the Sheti asterism shifted from its proper position; Jupiter shone by day in the Stomach asterism. The Stomach asterism corresponds to the territory of Yanzhou. In the sixth month of that year Xi Hui dispatched Deng Qifang and others with ten thousand men to strike the enemy at Huatai. Huatai lies within the Wei territories. Qifang and his force were beaten and withdrew in defeat. In the ninth month Wang Gong, Yu Kai, Yin Zhongkan, Huan Xuan, and others all took the field and memorialized the throne demanding the deaths of Wang Yu and the brothers Sima Shangzhi. The court declared a general alert and levied the populace on a vast scale. Zhongkan's army reached Xunyang and seized Wang Yu, the Governor of Jiangzhou; Kai's general Duan Fang attacked Shangzhi at Yanghu, was routed, and Fang was killed. Wang Gong's chief officer Liu Laozhi turned against him, and Gong was defeated. Huan Xuan advanced as far as Baishi but likewise broke off and retreated. Zhongkan withdrew to Jiangling. In the winter of the third year the Governor of Jingzhou Yin Zhongkan was slain by Huan Xuan.

In the intercalary month of Long'an 2, Venus shone by day in the Forest of Spears. On a dingchou day the moon trespassed against the Eastern Upper Prime Minister star. On a xinyou day in the fifth month of the third year, the moon once again eclipsed the Eastern Upper Prime Minister star. On a xinwei day Mercury trespassed against the Yellow Dragon star. All omens were read as above. In the first month of that year Yang Quanqi routed Xi Hui and seized his command; Yin Zhongkan then had him killed. In the sixth month the Xianbei overran Qingzhou. In the tenth month Qiang rebels captured Luoyang. Huan Xuan conquered Jing and Yong and slew Yin Zhongkan and Yang Quanqi. Sun En raised an army, seized Kuaiji, and killed the Administrator Wang Ningzhi; Liu Laozhi marched east against him and put him to flight. In the seventh month of the fourth year Grand Empress Dowager Li died.

Sweeping the Three Terraces and entering the Northern Dipper — the omen was read as in the preceding entry. On a jiwei day in the sixth month the moon once again trespassed against Saturn in Leading Ox. On a xinyou day it trespassed against the Weeping Star once more. In the tenth month it eclipsed Jupiter in the Northern River asterism. The prognostication reads: "This foretells famine." On a wuyin day in the twelfth month a comet blazed at Coiled Thong, the Celestial Market Enclosure, and Celestial Ford. The prognostication reads: "Great ministers will perish in the dungeons; war and mourning will strike both within and without. When Celestial Ford is cut by rebels, the king's highway will no longer pass through the land." From the twelfth month Venus shone by day in the Dipper asterism, and remained so until a yimao day in the first month of the fifth year. The omen was read to mean the calamity would fall upon Wu and Yue. On a jiayin day in the third month many crimson meteors streaked westward through Leading Ox, Emptiness, Rooftop, Celestial Ford, and Celestial Pathway, cutting through the Supreme Palace Enclosure and Purple Forbidden Enclosure. The prognostication reads: "Stars stand for the common folk; a host of them streaming westward images mass flight of the people. Cutting straight through the imperial court means a weak sovereign and powerful ministers, with the warlords' armies beyond restraint." On a guihai day in the seventh month the Great Horn star flickered and shimmered in five colors. The prognostication reads: "The sovereign and his house will be driven into exile." On a dingmao day the moon trespassed against the Celestial Gate star. The prognostication reads: "The sovereign will be gripped with dread." On a gengzi day in the ninth month Mars trespassed against the Lesser Supreme Enclosure and then lingered there. The prognostication reads: "Men of learning in retirement will be put to death." On a wuzi day in the tenth month the moon trespassed against the Eastern Rampart second-rank minister star. In the fifth month of the fourth year Sun En again seized Kuaiji and killed the Administrator Xie Yan; The court sent Gao Yazhi and others to suppress him. In the seventh month Grand Empress Dowager Li died. In the tenth month the rebel forces routed Gao Yazhi at Yuyao, and seven or eight out of every ten men perished. In the second month of the fifth year Sun En assaulted Gouzhang and Emperor Gaozu (Liu Yu) barred his advance. In the fifth month Yuan Shansong, the Administrator of Wu Commandery, took the field and was slain; several thousand men lost their lives. In the sixth month Sun En advanced to Jingkou, and Emperor Gaozu (Liu Yu) routed him. En's army lay at Puzhou; the court then declared a general alert throughout the realm, deployed garrisons in fortified camps, and sealed the mouth of the Huai with barricades. En sent a detached commander against Guangling and slaughtered more than three thousand people. En fled and occupied Yuzhou. That same month Emperor Gaozu (Liu Yu) pursued him again and defeated him. In the ninth month Huan Xuan's memorial reached the capital, defying the throne and showing insolence toward the sovereign. In the tenth month Sima Yuanyao mustered a great fleet, preparing to march against Huan Xuan. In the first month of Yuanxing 1, Huan Xuan marched east down the Yangtze. That same month Sun En was at Linhai; famine and death broke his army apart, and En himself drowned. Lu Xun proclaimed himself Campaign-General Who Subdues the Barbarians, took over the surviving rebel forces, and occupied parts of Yongjia and Jin'an. In the second month the emperor, clad for battle, sent out the Western Army. On a dingmao day Huan Xuan reached Gudu, took Liyang, Sima Shangzhi was slain, and Liu Laozhi surrendered to him. In the third month Huan Xuan captured the capital, put Sima Yuanyao to death, and banished the Grand Tutor Daozi. In the seventh month famine reached such extremes that people turned to cannibalism. East of the Zhe River six or seven out of every ten people starved or fled as refugees, and the registered population of Wu Commandery and Wuxing was cut in half; while tens of thousands more fled westward. In the tenth month Huan Xuan sent a general against Liu Gui, routed him, and drove him to flee into Qingzhou. In the fourth year Huan Xuan seized the throne and relocated the emperor to Xunyang.

In the tenth month a guest star pale as drifting cotton floss appeared west of the Supreme Palace Enclosure, and by the twelfth month it had entered the enclosure itself. The prognostication reads: "Armed men will enter the imperial court." In the second month of the second year Jupiter trespassed against the Western Upper General star. On a jiachen day in the sixth month it eclipsed the fourth star of the Dipper asterism. The prognostication reads: "High ministers will be put to death within three years." On a guichou day in the eighth month Venus trespassed against the second northern star of the Room asterism. On a jichou day in the ninth month Jupiter trespassed against the Promoted Worthy star and Mars against the Western Upper General star. On a jiaxu day in the tenth month Venus trespassed against the Weeping Star. On a dingchou day in the eleventh month Mars trespassed against Saturn. On a xinsi day the moon trespassed against Mars. On a yisi day in the twelfth month the moon eclipsed the second star of the Yellow Dragon — all omens were read as above. In the winter of the first year the Tuoba (Suotou) routed the Qiang forces. In the twelfth month of the second year Huan Xuan seized the throne, banished the emperor and empress to Xunyang, and reduced Empress He of Yong'an to the title Lady of Lingling. In the second month of the third year Emperor Gaozu (Liu Yu) exterminated the Huan clan to the last man.

On a jiawu day in the fourth month the moon eclipsed the second star of the Yellow Dragon; Saturn entered the Forest of Spears; in the twelfth month both Mars and Venus trespassed against the Forest of Spears — the omen was read as above. On a bingchen day in the second month of that year Emperor Gaozu (Liu Yu) executed Huan Xiu and his allies. On a jiwei day in the third month he routed Huan Xuan and put him to flight, then sent troops west in pursuit. On a xinsi day he put to death Left Vice Director Wang Yu and his son Sui, the Governor of Jingzhou. Huan Xuan abducted the emperor and carried him off to Jiangling. In the fifth month Huan Xuan sailed down to Zhengrong Isle, where the loyalist armies crushed him. Huan Zhen again captured Jiangling and held the emperor captive. In the first month of the following year the allied armies attacked him; Zhen fled, and the imperial carriage at last returned. In the seventh month Empress He of Yong'an died. In the third month Huan Zhen struck at Jiangling again; Sima Xiuzhi, the Governor of Jingzhou, was defeated and fled. That same month Liu Huaisu struck at Huan Zhen and wiped him out. In the second month of that year Qiao Zong of Baxi killed the Governor of Yizhou Mao Qi and Mao Qi's younger brother Mao Jin, the Commander of the Western Barbarians, took possession of the western lands, and proclaimed himself King of Shu.

In the sixth month of that year the Tuoba chieftain (Suotou) invaded the Pei commandery, posting the puppet Inspector of Yuzhou Suo Duzhen at Xiang county; the Grand Tutor, Prince of Changsha Jing, routed the invaders and drove them off. In the eleventh month Wei Yongzhi, the Governor of Jingzhou, died. In the second month of the second year Sima Guofan and his allies captured Yiyang. In the fourth month Qiang forces attacked Chouchi; Yang Sheng, the Lord of Chouchi, beat them back. In the ninth month Sima Rongqi, the Governor of Yizhou, was murdered by his aide Yang Chengzu; Wen Chumao was then pressing the Shu campaign with repeated victories, but with Rongqi dead the army pulled back. In the twelfth month of the third year Wang Mi, Minister over the Masses and Inspector of Yangzhou, died. In the first month of the fourth year Zun, the Prince of Wuling and Grand Guardian, died. In the third month Kong Anguo, the Left Vice Director, died. In the fifth year Emperor Gaozu (Liu Yu) marched against the Xianbei and restored the old Yan heartland to Jin rule.

In the sixth month the armies clashed in a great battle at Linqu and then pressed on to besiege Guanggu. In the tenth month Tuoba Gui (Shigui) was slain by his own son, the puppet Duke of Qinghe. In the second month of the sixth year Guanggu fell; Murong Chao was taken alive; more than three thousand of his followers were buried alive or beheaded.

On a xinmao day in the sixth month Mars trespassed against Mercury in the Wings asterism. The prognostication reads: "War will break out across the empire." On a jimao day in the eighth month Venus eclipsed Mars and also trespassed against the Law Enforcer star. The prognostication reads: "When a star eclipses Mars, war will erupt on a vast scale." On a xinmao day Mars trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer star. On a renzi day in the ninth month Mars trespassed against the Advance Kidney star. On a dingsi day in the first month of that year the Xianbei invaded Northern Xuzhou and advanced to Xiapi. In the eighth month Liu Jingxuan's expedition against Shu failed, and he withdrew without victory. In the third month of the fourth year Kong Anguo, the Left Vice Director, died. In the seventh month Sima Guofan and his allies overran Mount Zou; Xu Yong, the Administrator of Lu, routed them and drove them away. Yao Lue sent an army against Helian Bobo (Fofo) and was shattered in return. In the fifth year Emperor Gaozu (Liu Yu) marched against the Xianbei. In the third month of the sixth year the rebel Xu Daofu murdered He Wuji — General Who Guards the South and Inspector of Jiangzhou — at Yuzhang. In the fourth month the rebel Lu Xun struck at Balin in Xiang commandery. On a bingzi day in the fifth month Lu Xun and Xu Daofu crushed Liu Yi, General Who Pacifies the Army and Inspector of Yuzhou, at Sangluo Isle; Yi escaped with little more than his life. On a dingchou day the rebels reached Cai Isle and sent a detached force to burn Jingkou. On a gengchen day the rebels stormed and burned Chapu; its garrison fought but could not hold; Emperor Gaozu sent troops across the Huai and broke them decisively. Sima Guofan raided Mount Dang; Zhu Kui struck back and routed him. In the seventh month the rebel hosts withdrew south to hold Xunyang; Emperor Gaozu sent Liu Zhong and others in pursuit. In the eighth month Sun Jigao put to sea against Guangzhou. Huan Qian gathered his Shu contingents at Zhijiang while Lu Xun's commander Xun Lin overran Huarong — the two forces lay a hundred li apart. The Prince of Linchuan Lie Wu struck at Huan Qian and then at Xun Lin; Lin broke and fled. Yu Qiu Jin, the Administrator of Poyang, routed a rebel lieutenant at Shangrao. In the ninth month the Prince of Linchuan Lie Wu sent Liu Zun against Xun Lin at Balin and had him beheaded. Huan Dao'er led Cai Meng toward Dabo; Liu Ji was sent against them again and struck Meng down. In the tenth month Emperor Gaozu sailed south at the head of a fleet. At that time Xu Daofu led more than twenty thousand men against Jingzhou; the Prince of Linchuan Lie Wu met him in the field. At the Jiangjin crossing they fought a great battle, shattered the rebel host, and slaughtered eight or nine men in ten. Xu Daofu abandoned his war-junks and took flight. In the eleventh month Liu Zhong routed the rebels at Nanling. On a guichou day Bao Lou, the Governor of Yizhou, died at Baidi; Qiao Daofu struck, overran his force, and absorbed his men. On a gengxu day Sun Jigao stormed Guangzhou by surprise and took the city. In the twelfth month, at Dalei, Emperor Gaozu met the rebels in battle and broke them decisively. The rebels fled toward Zuoli; a pursuit shattered them again, and eight or nine men in ten perished. The rebels withdrew to Guangzhou; Liu Fan and others pressed the pursuit. In the second month of the seventh year Liu Fan stormed Shixing and struck off Xu Daofu's head; Lu Xun fell back on Panyu, besieged Sun Jigao, but failed to take him. He fled toward Jiaozhou; Du Huidu, the Governor of Jiaozhou, tracked him down and killed him. In the fourth month Dao Yanzhi besieged Qiao Daofu at Baidi and took the city.

The omen read: "The realm will face grave concern." Another interpretation holds: "There will be a gathering in white." On a jichou day in the sixth month the moon trespassed against the second southern star of the Room asterism. On a jiawu day Venus shone by day — all omens were read as above. On a jihai day in the seventh month the moon trespassed against the Celestial Cart and Ghost asterism. The omen read: "The realm will face grave concern." Another interpretation holds: "Qin will go to war." On a renwu day in the eighth month Venus crossed the chief star of Xuanyuan. On a jiashen day the moon trespassed against the anterior star of the Heart asterism. Disaster would fall upon Yuzhou. On a bingxu day the moon trespassed against the fifth star of the Dipper asterism — all omens were read as in the fifth month. On a dinghai day the moon eclipsed the southern star of the Leading Ox asterism. The prognostication reads: "Mass executions will sweep the empire." On a yiwei day Venus trespassed against the Lesser Supreme Enclosure. On a bingwu day Venus stood in the Lesser Supreme Enclosure and shone by day. On a jiayin day in the ninth month Venus trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer star. On a dingchou day Saturn trespassed against the Net asterism. The omen read: "Armies would stir on the frontier." In the third month of that year Xu Daofu, the Administrator of Shixing, rose in rebellion; He Wuji, the Governor of Jiangzhou, marched against him but was crushed at Yuzhang, where he was killed. In the fourth month Lu Xun harried the Xiang region and captured Balin. In the fifth month Lu Xun and his allies shattered Liu Yi, the Inspector of Yuzhou; Yi escaped with little more than his life. Lu Xun then drove his host toward the capital. That same month Meng Chang, the Left Vice Director, fearing that imperial authority had waned, drank poison and took his own life. In the second month of the seventh year Liu Fan had Xu Daofu's head displayed on a pole; Du Huidu struck down Lu Xun — both heads were sent to the capital. In the sixth month of the eighth year Daogui, the Prince of Linchuan Lie Wu, died while serving as Governor of Yuzhou. In the eighth month Empress Wang died. In the ninth month Liu Fan, the Inspector of Yanzhou, and Xie Hun, the Vice Director of the Masters of Writing, were put to death. Emperor Gaozu marched west against Liu Yi and struck him down. In the twelfth month he sent Zhu Lingshi, the Governor of Yizhou, to invade Shu. In the ninth year Zhuge Changmin was put to death. Fan Huda, the King of Linyi, led more than ten thousand men against Jiuzhen; Du Huiqi, the Administrator of Jiuzhen, met him in the field and routed him. In the seventh month Zhu Lingshi conquered Shu.

On a guimao day in the twelfth month Saturn trespassed against the Well Axe star. In the eighth month of that year Empress Wang died. In the ninth month Liu Fan and Xie Hun were put to death and Liu Yi was wiped out. In the third month of the ninth year Zhuge Changmin was put to death. Western barbarian forces stormed the Qiang garrison at Anding and took it. In the twelfth month Zhu Lingshi invaded Shu. In the seventh month of the ninth year Zhu Lingshi conquered Shu.

On a bingwu day in the second month of Yiyuan 9, Mars and Saturn both trespassed against the Eastern Well asterism. The prognostication reads: "Qin will go to war." On a renchen day Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, and Venus converged in the Eastern Well asterism, trailing Jupiter's lead. Mars entered the Celestial Cart and Ghost asterism; Venus trespassed against the Southern River. Earlier, in Yiyuan 3, four planets converged at the Kui asterism; Kui and Bond govern the territory of Xuzhou. At that time Murong Chao had usurped a royal title in Qi and harried Xu and Yan, raiding year after year as far as the Huai and Si rivers. Yao Xing and Qiao Zong had set up puppet states of Qin and Shu. Lu Xun and Helian Bobo (Mumu) pressed in from south and north alike. In the fifth year Emperor Gaozu annihilated the Xianbei in the north — the fulfillment of the four-planet convergence at Kui. In the ninth year the planets converged again at the Eastern Well. The Eastern Well asterism governs the territory of Qin. In the thirteenth year Emperor Gaozu pacified the Guanzhong region — another fulfillment of the omen. By then the ringleaders Zong, Xun, and their ilk had all been destroyed; Heaven and men alike looked to a new ruler, and the dynasty was founded in the old Xu territories. In Yuanxi 2 he received the abdication and took the throne — all of this was the omen's fulfillment. The Treatise on Stars explains: "When four stars unite, the pattern is called Supreme Yang — war and death in arms together afflict the realm, the worthy grieve, and the base scatter. When five stars unite, the pattern is called Changing Motion. The virtuous receive blessing, a new sovereign is raised, and all four quarters are possessed; the unvirtuous suffer punishment — realm lost, ancestral shrines razed." Surveying the texts that survive, three cases of five-star convergences stand out: Zhou and Han won kingship, Qi won hegemony — as the Zhou house prepared to attack Yin, five stars converged at the Room asterism. When Duke Huan of Qi was rising to hegemony, five stars converged at the Winnower asterism. When the Han Founder entered Qin, five stars converged at the Eastern Well asterism. Qi, however, remained only a hegemon and never changed the dynastic age — no case of Changing Motion at all. Thus among five-star convergences there are cases that never involve Changing Motion. Nine instances of four-star convergence are recorded: Guangwu of Han and Emperor Yuan of Jin both revived fallen dynasties, while Wei and Song both ushered in new reign eras. Thus among four-star convergences there are cases of Changing Motion after all. In Yuanshi 4 of Emperor Ping of Han, four planets converged at the Willow and Extended Net asterisms, lingering five days apiece. The Willow and Extended Net asterisms govern the Three Rivers region. Thereafter came the turmoil of Wang Mang and the Red Eyebrows, and Guangwu restored the Han at Luoyang. In Yongjia 6 of Emperor Huai of Jin, four planets converged at the Ox and Maiden asterisms; later Liu Cong and Shi Le ravaged the realm, and Emperor Yuan restored order in the Yang region. In Chuping 1 of Emperor Xian of Han, four planets converged at the Heart asterism, then again at the Winnower and Tail. The Heart asterism governs the territory of Yuzhou. Thereafter Dong Zhuo and Li Jue plunged the realm into chaos, the Yellow Turbans and Black Mountain rebels ran riot, and Cao Cao brought the emperor to Xu and secured Yan and Yu — the omen was fulfilled. One interpretation holds: "The Heart is the Celestial King — when great armies enter the throne hall, it foretells empire-wide calamity." Han Fu read the Tail and Winnower as a sign that Yan would rise, and so offered the throne to Liu Yu of Youzhou; Yu refused and soon perished — the reading had already missed the mark. The Tail governs Yan and also Wu — the omen pointed not to Gongsun Du but to Sun Quan. Gongsun Du held only a remote corner of the realm, yet he offered suburban sacrifices with full imperial rite — in effect he had cast off Han. In Jian'an 22 the four planets converged once more. Twenty-five years later Emperor Wen of Wei accepted the abdication — a third four-star convergence with Changing Motion. Shu officials likewise claimed the later convergence as Liu Bei's omen fulfilled. Reviewing Taiyuan 19 and the ninth month of Yiyuan 3, four planets each converged once, and Song won the realm — the same pattern as Wei. Yu Huan writes: "When five stars converged toward Ji, Wei won the empire." Mars entered the Celestial Cart and Ghost asterism. The prognostication reads: "War and death in arms." Venus trespassed against the Southern River star. The prognostication reads: "War will break out." In every case the omens were later fulfilled.

In the first month of the eleventh year Emperor Gaozu campaigned against Sima Xiuzhi, Lu Zongzhi, and their allies; they broke and fled toward Chang'an. In the fifth month Linyi invaded Jiaozhou; the Governor of Jiaozhou Du Huidu gave battle at Jiuzhen and was routed. In the seventh month of the twelfth year Emperor Gaozu marched against the Qiang. In the tenth month the advance forces secured Shaan and Luoyang. In the third month of the thirteenth year the Tuoba chieftain's great army raided along the Yellow River; Emperor Gaozu struck and drove them back in flight; his subordinate commander Tuoba Song gave battle and was shattered again, and Song's entire force was wiped out. Pressing forward, he again stormed the frontier passes. In the eighth month Yao Hong was taken prisoner; Si, Yan, Qin, and Yong were all brought under control, and the Tuoba ruler was gripped with fear. In the fourteenth year Emperor Gaozu returned to Pengcheng and was invested as Duke of Song. In the eleventh month the Left Vice Director and Forward General Liu Muzhi died. The following year the western enemy struck Chang'an; the armies under the Governor of Yongzhou Zhu Lingshi were destroyed, and the imperial forces abandoned the region and withdrew east. In the twelfth month Emperor An died; his younger uterine brother, the Prince of Langye, ascended the throne — he is known as Emperor Gong.
