On a jiachen day in the twelfth month of Yongchu 1 (420 CE), the moon trespassed against the Southern Dipper asterism. The omen was read as follows: "High ministers will face grave concern." In the seventh month of the third year, the Prince of Changsha died. The Tuoba forces raided Qing and Si provinces, and imperial armies were dispatched in relief.

On a jiashen day in the sixth month of Yongchu 2, Venus shone by day. The omen read: "This foretells war and death in arms, and ministers growing strong." In the fifth month of the third year, the emperor died. Soon afterward armies were sent to relieve Qing and Si. Thereafter Xu Xianzhi and his faction seized power — the fulfillment of the omen of overmighty ministers. On a yiyou day in the sixth month of Yongchu 2, Mars trespassed against the Root asterism. On a yisi day, it trespassed against the Room asterism. The omen read: "Root signifies the ruler's lodging palace; Room signifies the Bright Hall — the sovereign will face grave concern. Room also governs generals and chancellors — they too will face grave concern. Root and Room also correspond to the territories of Yan and Yu provinces." In the fifth month of the third year, the emperor died. In the seventh month the Prince of Changsha died; he had held the governorship of Yan province. In Jingping 1 (423 CE), Prince Yizhen of Luling was deposed; he had held the governorship of Yu province. In the tenth month of Yongchu 2, Venus trespassed against Saturn in the Neck asterism. Neck corresponds to Yan province and also to the state of Zheng. The omen read: "When major stars clash, great armies arise; when the metal and earth stars unite, civil war follows." In the third year the Tuoba ruler overran Qing, Ji, and Yan; the palace guard armies marched out in force; Yan province fell and Hulao was lost.

On a dingmao day in the first month of Yongchu 3, the moon again trespassed against the Southern Dipper, with the same omen as in Yongchu 1. An alternate reading held: "The chief consort will bear the brunt of the omen." On a xinmao day in the second month, a comet blazed in the Emptiness and Rooftop asterisms, heading toward the River Ford and sweeping through the River Drum. The omen read: "This foretells war and death in arms." In the fifth month the emperor died. The following year armies were sent to relieve Qing and Si. In the second month Empress Dowager Xiao died. On a renchen day in the second month of Yongchu 3, Saturn trespassed against the Neck asterism. The omen read: "Some feudal lords will lose their domains and the people will flee in great numbers." An alternate reading held: "Court ministers will foment rebellion. Neck corresponds to Yan province and also to the state of Zheng." That year the Tuoba ruler besieged Si and Yan; Yan Inspector Xu Yan abandoned his post and fled in defeat; Si Inspector Mao Dezu held out until his city fell; officials and commoners along the river suffered widespread raids. On a renxu day in the third month of Yongchu 3, the moon again trespassed against the Southern Dipper, with the same omen as in the first month. On a bingwu day in the fifth month, it trespassed against the Yellow Thearch asterism. The omen read: "The chief consort will bear the brunt of the calamity." On a xinsi day in the sixth month, the moon trespassed against the Room asterism. The omen read: "Generals and chancellors will face grave concern, and Yu province will suffer disaster." On a guisi day, it trespassed against Jupiter in the Hairy Head asterism. The omen read: "The regions of Zhao and Wei will suffer war and famine." That year the invaders overran Qing, Yan, and Si provinces. Prince Yizhen of Luling was deposed; he had held the governorship of Yu province. In the second month Empress Dowager Xiao died. In the third year of Yuanjia (426 CE), Minister over the Masses Xu Xianzhi and his co-conspirators were executed. On a guimao day in the ninth month of Yongchu 3, Mars traversed the Supreme Palace Enclosure and trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer star. On a jiwei day it trespassed against the Right Law Enforcer; the omens were all as stated above. On a guiyou day in the tenth month, Venus trespassed against the Southern Dipper. The omen read: "The realm will see warfare, and some great ministers will turn traitor." On a xinsi day, Mars trespassed against the Advance the Worthy star. The omen read: "Officials of the Advance the Worthy rank will be put to death." The following year armies marched out to relieve Qing and Si. In Jingping 2 (424 CE), Xu Xianzhi and his faction deposed the emperor and reduced him to a princely rank. In the third year of Yuanjia, Xianzhi together with Fu Liang and Xie Hui were all put to death. On a wuwu day in the eleventh month of Yongchu 3, a comet blazed in the Encampment and Wall asterisms. The omen read: "This foretells war and death in arms." The following year armies were sent to relieve Qing and Si. In the second month Empress Dowager Xiao died. The Encampment asterism symbolizes the inner palace. On a guihai day in the eleventh month of Yongchu 3, the moon trespassed against the Neck and Root asterisms. The omen read: "The realm will face grave concern." On a wuxu day in the twelfth month, Mars trespassed against the Room asterism. Room signifies the Bright Hall — an ill omen for the sovereign. An alternate reading held: "Generals and chancellors will face grave concern." In Jingping 2, Xianzhi and his faction deposed the emperor and then had him murdered. In the third year of Yuanjia, Xianzhi and his co-conspirators were executed.

On a yimao day in the first month of Jingping 1 under the deposed emperor, a white comet blazed south of the Eastern Wall, more than twenty feet long, sweeping through the Heavenly Park; it vanished after twenty days. In the second month Empress Dowager Xiao died. On a wuwu day in the tenth month, a comet blazed north of Root with a tail four zhang long, pointing northwest; it pierced Triumphant Arrival and headed toward the Great Horn, traveling east and lengthening six or seven feet per day; it vanished after more than ten days. In the fifth month of the following year, Xianzhi and his faction deposed the emperor.

In the tenth month of the first year of Yuanjia (424 CE) under Emperor Wen, Mars trespassed against the Heart asterism. On the night of a jiayin day in the first month of the third year of Yuanjia, black vapor appeared in the southeast sky, ten feet wide and more than a hundred feet long. In the fifth month of the sixth year of Yuanjia (429 CE), Venus shone by day and traversed the heavens. In the third month of the seventh year of Yuanjia, Venus trespassed against Jupiter in the Striding Legs asterism. In the sixth month, Mars trespassed against the Eastern Well and Chariot-Ghost asterisms and entered the Yellow Thearch. The moon trespassed against Jupiter. On a guiwei day in the eleventh month, vapor appeared in the southwest, red at top and bottom with black in the center, three feet wide and more than three hundred feet long, shaped like a banner. On a bingxu day in the twelfth month, a meteor appeared with a head the size of a jar and a tail more than two hundred feet long, as large as a grain ship of several dozen hu capacity, glowing red with light that fell on people's faces; it traveled from the west, passed south of the northern great star of Striding Legs, and halted at the Eastern Wall. That year the Tuoba forces raided Qing and Si, killed the provincial inspectors, and plundered the populace. General Who Conquers the South Tan Daoji was dispatched on campaign; he did not return until a full year had passed.

On a xinwei day in the fourth month of the eighth year of Yuanjia (431 CE), Venus shone by day in the Stomach asterism. In the fifth month it trespassed against the Heavenly Gate and Eastern Well. On a gengwu day in the sixth month, Mars entered the Eastern Well asterism. On the night of a renxu day in the seventh month, a white rainbow appeared in the east. On a dingchou day, Venus trespassed against the Supreme General star. On a guiwei day in the eighth month, Venus entered within the Right Side Gate of the Supreme Palace Enclosure and trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer. On a yiwei day, Mars trespassed against the Heap of Corpses star. On a bingyin day in the ninth month, a meteor as large as the Big Dipper, glowing red, issued from the western rampart of the Supreme Palace Enclosure and traveled north; it vanished before reaching the Northern Dipper, its afterglow extending some thirty feet. On a bingchen day in the tenth month, Venus and Saturn clashed in the Maiden asterism, and the moon eclipsed the Heavenly Gate and Eastern Well. In the twelfth month the moon trespassed against the Room Sash and Hook stars. In the tenth year the Di of Chouchi raided Hanzhong and Liang province lost its frontier garrisons.

On a gengwu day in the first month of the ninth year of Yuanjia (432 CE), Mars entered the Chariot-Ghost asterism. In the third month the moon trespassed against the Yellow Thearch. In the fourth month it trespassed against the Left Horn, and Jupiter entered the Feathered Forest. The moon trespassed against the Room Sash and Hook. On a jichou day, Venus entered the Heap of Corpses. In the fifth month it trespassed against the Yellow Thearch, and the moon eclipsed the sixth star of the Southern Dipper. On a xinyou day, Mars entered the Right Side Gate of the Supreme Palace Enclosure and trespassed against the Right Law Enforcer. On a bingwu day in the seventh month, the moon eclipsed the Left Horn. On a guiwei day in the eighth month, Venus trespassed against the front star of the Heart asterism. On a yiyou day, it trespassed against the Bright Hall star of the Heart asterism. In the tenth month of the tenth year of Yuanjia, a meteor appeared with a head the size of a jar and a tail more than two hundred feet long. On a gengzi day in the second month of the eleventh year of Yuanjia, the moon trespassed against the Net asterism, entered its mouth and emerged, producing a halo over the Hairy Head and Net that extended west to the Five Chariots and east to the Three Stars. On a bingchen day in the third month, Venus shone by day in the Three Stars asterism. On a wuyin day in the intercalary month, Venus trespassed against the Five Feudal Lords stars. On a jichou day, the moon entered the Eastern Well and trespassed against Venus. At that time Minister over the Masses Prince Yikang of Pengcheng held sole power at court.

On a renxu day in the fifth month of the twelfth year of Yuanjia, the moon trespassed against the Right Law Enforcer. On a renxu day in the seventh month, Mars trespassed against the Heap of Corpses and eclipsed the Supreme General star. On a bingwu day in the tenth month, the moon trespassed against the Right Law Enforcer. On a jiashen day in the twelfth month, Venus trespassed against the Feathered Forest. In the seventeenth year the Supreme General and Law Enforcer stars' omens were fulfilled when those officials were all put to death.

On a gengwu day in the first month of the thirteenth year of Yuanjia, the moon trespassed against Mars. In the second month the moon trespassed against the first star of the eastern rampart of the Supreme Palace Enclosure. On a xinhai day in the eleventh month, Jupiter trespassed against the Heap of Corpses. On a wuzi day in the twelfth month, Mars entered the Feathered Forest. Two years later Grand General Prince Yikang of Pengcheng and his faction were deposed; and all those arrested were seized by Feathered Forest guard troops.

In the first month of the fourteenth year of Yuanjia, a star was visible by day before dusk in the northeast sky near the Well asterism, yellow-red in color and as large as an orange. The moon trespassed against the Eastern Well. On a dingwei day in the fourth month, Venus trespassed against the Chariot-Ghost asterism. On a bingzi day in the fifth month, Venus shone by day within the Supreme Palace Enclosure. On a xinmao day in the seventh month, Jupiter entered the Yellow Thearch. On a gengshen day in the eighth month, Mars trespassed against the Supreme General star. On a bingxu day in the ninth month, Mars trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer. Thereafter Empress Yuan died, Danyang Intendant Liu Zhan was executed, and Vice Director of the Masters of Writing Yin Jingren died.

On a jimao day in the fourth month of the fifteenth year of Yuanjia, the moon trespassed against the Root asterism. On a renxu day in the tenth month, a meteor as large as a duck issued from Prosperity's Terrace, entered the Purple Palace Enclosure, and thundered as it passed. On a guiwei day in the eleventh month, Mars entered the Feathered Forest. On a dingwei day, the moon trespassed against the Battle-axe star of the Eastern Well. Thereafter Danyang Intendant Liu Zhan and his associates were executed.

In the second month of the sixteenth year of Yuanjia, Jupiter moved retrograde and trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer. On a dingmao day in the fifth month, Venus shone by day between the Stomach and Hairy Head asterisms. The moon entered the Feathered Forest; Venus trespassed against the Net; and Jupiter trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer. In the seventh month the moon conjoined with Saturn. In the eighth month Venus trespassed against the Yellow Thearch. The following year Empress Yuan died. Mars trespassed against the Western Supreme General of the Supreme Palace Enclosure; Venus shone by day in the Wings asterism. In the ninth month Mars likewise entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure and clashed with other stars there. Venus trespassed against the Left Law Enforcer, and Mars trespassed against the Right Law Enforcer. In the tenth month Jupiter and Mars clashed in the Neck asterism. In the eleventh month Mars trespassed against the first northern star of the Room asterism. The following year Grand General Yikang was exiled to Yuzhang and his faction was put to death. Vice Director of the Masters of Writing and Yang Inspector Yin Jingren died.

In the ninth month of the nineteenth year of Yuanjia, a guest star appeared at the Northern Dipper, gradually became a comet, and vanished only after reaching the end of the Heavenly Park. On the twenty-fourth day of the second month of the twentieth year of Yuanjia, a yiwei day, a meteor as large as a peach issued from the Celestial Ford and entered the Purple Palace Enclosure; moments later fine meteors followed in groups of five or three; then another great meteor issued from the Purple Palace Enclosure and entered the Dipper's Ladle; moments later yet another great meteor issued, pierced the Coiled Thong, passed through the Heavenly Market Enclosure; all the meteors traveled north together until dawn in numbers beyond counting. Prognostications on meteors all state: "They signify the sovereign's envoys." It is also said: "The common people are as stars. When stars stream across the sky, it is an image of the people scattering." By the twenty-seventh year the Tuoba forces had ravaged Qing, Ji, Xu, Yan, Southern Yan, and Yu — six provinces — and more than half the populace perished.

In the second month of the twenty-second year of Yuanjia, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter conjoined in the Eastern Well. In the fourth month the moon trespassed against Heart, and Venus entered the Yellow Thearch. In the seventh month Venus shone by day. That winter Heir Apparent Household Steward Fan Ye plotted rebellion and was executed. In the first month of the twenty-third year of Yuanjia, Venus and Mars flared against each other. That month the Tuoba forces raided Qing province and drove off the populace. In the first month of the twenty-fourth year of Yuanjia, the moon trespassed against the great star of the Heart asterism. Stars all streamed westward, mostly small, none larger than a chicken egg, with tails of varying length — there must have been several hundred. By dawn, when the sunlight steadied, they ceased; some entered the Northern Dipper and Purple Palace Enclosure. The omen read: "When meteors swarm toward a place, armies gather beneath it and grave urgency arises." Another omen read: "When many stars stream together, generals all raise armies. Events follow where the stars go, responding to Heaven's signs." Another omen read: "When a meteor enters the Purple Palace Enclosure, mourning follows; floods and droughts fall out of balance." Another omen read: "When a meteor enters the Northern Dipper, great ministers will be imprisoned." Another omen read: "Meteors signify the people; great stars mean great ministers flee, small stars mean common folk flee." In the fourth month Venus shone by day. In the eighth month General Who Conquers the North Prince Yiji of Hengyang died; and the commoner Hu Danshi of Yuzhang led his clan to overrun commanderies and counties, killing the grand administrators and county magistrates.

In the first month of the twenty-fifth year of Yuanjia, Mars and Mercury entered the Feathered Forest. The moon trespassed against Jupiter; Venus shone by day and traversed the heavens. In the tenth month of the twenty-sixth year of Yuanjia, a comet entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure. In the eleventh month white vapor pierced through the Northern Dipper. In the summer of the twenty-seventh year Venus shone by day and traversed the heavens. In the ninth month Venus trespassed against Jupiter. In the tenth month Mars entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure. In the thirtieth year the crown prince's witchcraft and curse plot was exposed, and court ministers were put to death. In Xiaojian 1, Jing and Jiang provinces rebelled and were utterly destroyed. Curled Tongue symbolizes curses and imprecations. Where the comet arose was the fulfillment of that omen. In the first month of the twenty-ninth year of Yuanjia, Venus shone by day and traversed the heavens. The following year the Eastern Palace committed regicide.

At that time popular rumor held that the ruler's private conduct was scandalous. In the fourth month it trespassed against the Five Feudal Lords. The omen read: "Feudal lords will be executed." Venus and Mercury conjoined in the west. The omen read: "Armies will rise." In the fifth month Jupiter trespassed against the Battle-axe star of the Eastern Well. The omen read: "Axes and halberds will be employed; great ministers will be executed." Southern Yan Inspector Prince Dan of Jingling soon seized Guangling and rebelled; General of Agile Cavalry Shen Qingzhi was dispatched leading crack Feathered Forest troops together with the armies of Yu Inspector Zong Que and Xu Inspector Liu Daolong to attack. When the city was sacked, every man and woman, lay and clerical, within the walls was beheaded without exception. General Zong Yue favored cruel punishments: victims were first disemboweled and blinded, or flogged on the face and whipped on the belly, bitter wine poured into their wounds, and only then subjected to blade and saw. The following year Empress Dowager Zhao died; rebels rose in all four directions; royal armies marched by land and sea; at Yixing and Jinling counties a great battle was fought, with casualties numbering in the thousands.

That month on a gengzi day the moon trespassed against the Chariot-Ghost asterism. The omen read: "A general will die." That month on a jiayin day a meteor issued from the Five Chariots, reached the western battlement of the Purple Palace Enclosure, and vanished. The omen read: "Armies will rise." That month on a bingchen day black vapor pierced through the asterism. The omen read: "Among kings and marquises, some will die and be laid to rest." On a yiwei day in the third month meteors large and small traveled west in numbers beyond counting and did not cease until dawn. The omen read: "This foretells the people fleeing their homes." On a renwu day in the fourth month Mars entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure and trespassed against the Right Law Enforcer. On a bingzi day the moon stood there; Jupiter was seen by day in the Southern Dipper zone. The omen read: "That state will mobilize for war and suffer great defeat." That month on a jimao day more than a hundred meteors traveled southwest through the night; one as large as a bowl, with a tail more than ten feet long and black in color, issued from the River Drum. The omen also read: "Armies will rise." That month on a renwu day Venus stood south of the moon and both rose together in the east, constituting an encroachment. Heart corresponds to the territory of Song. That month on a bingwu day the moon trespassed against the Southern Dipper. The omen read: "Great ministers will be put to death." That month on a yimao day Mars trespassed against the Root asterism. Root is the territorial division of Yan province. On a xinsi day in the tenth month Venus entered the Root asterism. That year rebels rose in all four directions; internal armies marched out in force, and the Six Armies personally took the field. Empress Dowager Zhao died. The great general Yin Xiaozu was killed by southern rebels. Cai Xingzong, Vice Director of the Masters of Writing, citing Mars' trespass against the Right Law Enforcer, submitted his resignation; it was not accepted. In the ninth month rebels in all regions were pacified, and many surrendered. Later the four provinces north of the Huai were lost; Pengcheng and Yan province were both overrun by the Tuoba — the fulfillment of the omen of mass displacement. Pengcheng is the territorial division of Song. That spring grain was costly and the people suffered famine. The following year many cattle died of disease, and an edict ordered the Palace Provisioner to cease slaughtering cattle.

On a guimao day in the eighth month the Son of Heaven bestowed the empress's six-palace garments, gold hairpins, and miscellaneous goods upon the northern expedition troops. In the second month of the following year Wang Xuanmo, Protector of the Army, died.

On a bingxu day in the second month of the fifth year of Taishi the moon trespassed against the Left Horn. The omen read: "Within three years the Son of Heaven will find it inauspicious." On a gengshen day in the third month the moon trespassed against the Establishment Stars. The omen read: "The chancellor will be changed." On a renwu day in the tenth month the moon trespassed against the Net asterism. The omen read: "The Son of Heaven will employ the law; punishments will be severe; among the nobility some will die." That month on a bingshen day Venus trespassed against the Neck asterism. The omen read: "The armies of the realm will be gathered in to guard against the north." That winter Prince Xiuren of Jian'an relinquished Yang province, and Prince Xiufan of Guiyang became governor of Yang province. The governorship of Yang province was customarily held by chancellors before and after — the fulfillment of the omen of a change of chancellor. In the seventh year Princes Xiuyou of Jinping and Xiuren of Jian'an were both put to death. At the time the realm had lost the territory north of the Huai, and garrisons were established to guard against the Northern Tuoba. Three years later, the emperor died.

On a bingshen day in the seventh month of Yuanhui 3 under the Deposed Emperor, Venus entered the Horn and trespassed against Jupiter. The omen read: "Horn is the Gate of Heaven; the realm will see warfare." The prognostication held that when Venus and Jupiter meet at Horn, armies abroad are destroyed and defeated forces lose their generals. That month on a dingsi day Venus entered the Root asterism. Root is the Son of Heaven's lodging palace; Venus is the star of armies and disaster. On a jisi day in the eighth month Venus trespassed against the second star at the northern head of Room. The omen read: "The king will lose virtue." On a guimao day in the ninth month Venus trespassed against the third star of the Southern Dipper. The omen read: "The great man will bear the brunt of the calamity; the state will change its government." On a bingxu day in the tenth month Jupiter entered the Root asterism. The omen read: "Among feudal lords and rulers, some will come to enter the palace." On a gengxu day in the eleventh month the moon entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure and eclipsed the southwest star of the Screen. The omen read: "The noble will lose power." In the seventh month of the fourth year Prince Jingsu of Jianping rebelled and held Jingkou. At the time the deposed emperor was vicious beyond measure; in the fifth year he died in the seventh month, and the Prince of Ancheng seized the throne. Three years later, Qi received the abdication.

On a jiachen day in the ninth month Saturn trespassed against the western battlement of the Supreme Palace Enclosure. The omen read: "A king will be enthroned. One reading held: "A king will be relocated. The omen also read: "The great man will suffer anxiety. At the time the deposed emperor came and went without restraint; he ultimately died because of this, and the Prince of Ancheng was enthroned.

That month on a bingzi day Venus trespassed against the northwest star of the Chariot-Ghost asterism. The omen read: "There will be a great amnesty." On a wushen day in the fifth month Venus was seen by day above the noon position, its brilliance abnormal. The omen read: "The dynastic surname will change." On a renxu day in the sixth month the moon trespassed against the Hooked Clasp star. The omen read: "There will be a great command." That month on a yichou day the moon trespassed against the fourth star of the Southern Dipper. The prognostication was the same as before. In the seventh month the deposed emperor died, and a great amnesty was proclaimed throughout the realm. Two years later the Qi dynasty received the abdication of the throne.
