昔孔子作《春秋》而天人備。 予述本紀，書人而不書天，予何敢異於聖人哉！ 其文雖異，其意一也。
Long ago, when Confucius composed the Spring and Autumn Annals, the relation of Heaven and humanity was fully set forth. In composing my Basic Annals I write of men and not of Heaven; how could I presume to depart from the sage! The form of the text may differ, but the intent is the same.

自堯、舜、三代以來，莫不稱天以舉事，孔子刪《詩》、《書》不去也。 蓋聖人不絕天於人，亦不以天參人。 絕天於人則天道廢，以天參人則人事惑，故常存而不究也。 《春秋》雖書日食、星變之類，孔子未嘗道其所以然者，故其弟子之徒，莫得有所述於後世也。 然則天果與於人乎？ 果不與乎？ 曰：天，吾不知，質諸聖人之言可也。 《易》曰：「天道虧盈而益謙，地道變盈而流謙，鬼神害盈而福謙，人道惡盈而好謙。」 此聖人極論天人之際，最詳而明者也。 其於天地鬼神，以不可知為言，其可知者人而已。 夫日中則昃，盛衰必復。 天，吾不知，吾見其虧益於物者矣。 草木之成者，變而衰落之； 物之下者，進而流行之。 地，吾不知，吾見其變流於物者矣。 人之貪滿者多禍，其守約者多福。 鬼神，吾不知，吾見人之禍福者矣。 天地鬼神，不可知其心，則因其著於物者以測之。 故據其跡之可見者以為言，曰虧益，曰變流，曰害福。 若人則可知者，故直言其情曰好惡。 其知與不知，異辭也，參而會之，與人無以異也。 其果與於人乎，不與於人乎，則所不知也。 以其不可知，故常尊而遠之； 以其與人無所異也，則修吾人事而已。 人事者，天意也。 《書》曰：「天視自我民視，天聽自我民聽。」 未有人心悅於下而天意怒於上者，未有人理逆於下而天道順於上者。 然則王者君天下，子生民，布德行政，以順人心，是之謂奉天。 至於三辰五星常動而不息，不能無盈縮差忒之變，而占之有中有不中，不可以為常者，有司之事也。 本紀所述人君行事詳矣，其興亡治亂可以見。 至於三辰五星逆順變見，有司之所占者，故以其官誌之，以備司天之所考。
From the age of Yao and Shun through the Three Dynasties, no one failed to cite Heaven in justifying their deeds; Confucius, in editing the Odes and Documents, left such passages intact. The sage neither cuts Heaven off from human life nor lets Heaven intrude into human affairs. Cut Heaven off from men and the heavenly order is abandoned; let Heaven meddle in human affairs and public life falls into confusion—hence he holds both in view without pressing each to its ultimate ground. The Spring and Autumn does note solar eclipses, shifting stars, and the like, yet Confucius never explained why they occurred; his disciples therefore had nothing on this subject to transmit to posterity. Does Heaven, then, truly take part in human affairs? Or does it truly not? The answer must be: of Heaven I cannot speak with certainty; we may settle the question only by appeal to what the sage said. The Changes states: "The way of Heaven diminishes the full and augments the modest; the way of Earth transforms abundance and channels it toward modesty; spirits harm the proud and favor the humble; the way of man loathes excess and delights in modesty. This is the sage's fullest and clearest statement on the relation between Heaven and man. Regarding Heaven, Earth, and the spirits he speaks only of what cannot be known; what can be known is man alone. When the sun stands at noon it must decline; abundance and decay inevitably reverse. Of Heaven I cannot speak with knowledge; yet I see how it diminishes and augments things. Whatever among trees and grasses has reached maturity is transformed and brought low; whatever lies low is advanced and set flowing. Of Earth I cannot speak with knowledge; yet I see how it transforms things and sets them flowing. Men who grasp after excess mostly suffer misfortune; those who hold to restraint mostly enjoy good fortune. Of spirits and ghosts I cannot speak with knowledge; yet I see how fortune and misfortune visit men. The minds of Heaven, Earth, and the spirits cannot be known; we may infer them only from what appears in the things they affect. Hence, judging by visible traces, one speaks of diminishment and increase, of transformation and flow, of harm and blessing. With man, who can be known directly, one may state his feelings plainly as likes and dislikes. Whether the language speaks of what can or cannot be known differs; yet compare the two, and Heaven is not ultimately unlike man. Whether it truly participates in human affairs or does not remains unknowable. Because it cannot be known, we honor it and hold it at a distance; because in the end it is not different from man, we need only attend to human affairs. Human affairs are the will of Heaven. The Documents say: "Heaven sees as my people see; Heaven hears as my people hear. Never were the hearts of the people pleased below while Heaven's will was wrathful above; never was human order overturned below while the heavenly way ran smooth above. When a true king rules the realm, nurtures the people as his children, spreads virtue and governs in accord with the people's hearts, this is what it means to serve Heaven. The sun, moon, stars, and five planets move ceaselessly and cannot be without irregularities of excess and deficiency; that prognostication sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails and cannot be held as fixed law is the concern of the official astronomers. The Basic Annals record rulers' deeds at length, from which their rise and fall and the fortunes of order and chaos may be read. The irregular motions and appearances of the three luminaries and five planets are what the observing offices track; I therefore record them under that office, for the Examination on Astronomy to use.

嗚呼，聖人既沒，而異端起。 自秦、漢以來，學者惑於災異矣，天文五行之說，不勝其繁也。 予之所述，不得不異乎《春秋》也，考者可以知焉。
Alas—once the sage was gone, strange doctrines sprang up. Since Qin and Han, scholars have been lost in omens and prodigies; doctrines of astronomy and the Five Phases have multiplied beyond endurance. What I record here could not but differ from the Spring and Autumn—those who study the matter will see why.

In the first year of Qianhua, spring, first month, on the bingxu new moon there was a solar eclipse. In the fifth month a guest star encroached upon the Imperial Seat. In year 2, first month, on bingchen day Mars encroached upon the second star of Room. On wushen day the moon transgressed the great star of Heart. In the fourth month, on jiayin day, the moon occulted the great star of Heart. On renshen day a comet appeared in Extended Net; On jiaxu day a comet appeared at the Spiritual Terrace.

In year 3, third month, on bingchen day Mars encroached upon the Chief Minister. On wushen day there was a lunar eclipse. In the fourth month, on the guihai new moon, there was a solar eclipse. In the ninth month, on jiachen day, there was a lunar eclipse. On dingwei day a meteor fell; the sound was like thunder, and wild pheasants all cried out. In the first year of Qingtai, fifth month, on jiwei day, Venus was visible in daylight. In the sixth month, on jiaxu day, Venus encroached upon the Right Law-Enforcer. In the ninth month, on xinchou day, many stars crossed paths. On renyin day hail fell in the capital. Winter, eleventh month, on dingwei day a comet appeared at Void and Rooftop, sweeping across Ramparts and the Weeping Star.

In the first year of Qianyou, fourth month, on jiawu day, the moon transgressed the Southern Dipper. In the sixth month, on the wuyin new moon, there was a solar eclipse. On yiwei day the moon entered the Southern Dipper. In the seventh month, on jiayin day, the moon occulted the Crown Prince star of Heart. In the eighth month, on yiyou day, Saturn encroached upon the western wall of the Supreme Palace. On wuxu day Jupiter encroached upon the Right Law-Enforcer. In the ninth month, on dingmao day, the moon occulted Ghost. In the tenth month, on dingchou day, Jupiter encroached upon the Left Law-Enforcer. In year 2, fourth month, on renwu day, Venus was visible in daylight. In the sixth month, on the guiyou new moon, there was a solar eclipse. On renwu day the moon transgressed Heart; On bingxu day the moon transgressed the Heavenly Pass; In the eighth month, on yihai day, the moon transgressed the secondary general of Room. In the ninth month, on renyin day, Venus encroached upon the Right Law-Enforcer. On gengxu day Venus encroached upon Saturn. On xinyou day Saturn encroached upon the Right Law-Enforcer. On dingmao day Venus encroached upon Jupiter. Saturn had entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure on jichou day in the eighth month of year 1, encroaching upon the Supreme General, the Law-Enforcers, the Inner Screen, and the Petitioner, and traced hooked retrograde loops until it emerged in the eleventh month of that year, on xinhai day. On jiayin day the moon transgressed the Hairy Head. In year 3, second month, on jiaxu day, the moon transgressed the Hairy Head. In the sixth month, on yimao day, Saturn encroached upon the Left Flank. In the seventh month, on jiashen day, Mars encroached upon the Director of Anomalies. In the eighth month, on guimao day, Venus encroached upon Room; On gengxu day Venus encroached upon the great star of Heart. In the tenth month, on xinyou day, the moon transgressed the great star of Heart, and Venus encroached upon Jupiter. In the eleventh month, on the jiazi new moon, there was a solar eclipse.

In the first year of Guangshun, second month, on dingsi day, Jupiter encroached upon Salty Pool. On jiwei day Mars encroached upon the Five Feudal Lords. In the third month, on jiazi day, Jupiter stood at Heart. On jimao day Mars encroached upon Ghost; On renwu day Mars encroached upon the Heavenly Corpse. In the fourth month, on jiawu day, Jupiter encroached upon the Curved Halberds. In year 2, second month, on gengyin day, Venus crossed the meridian in daylight. In the fourth month, on the bingxu new moon, there was a solar eclipse. In the seventh month, on yichou day, Mars encroached upon the Well Halberd; In the eighth month, on yiwei day, Mars encroached upon the Heavenly Kettle. In the ninth month, on xinyou day, Mars encroached upon Ghost. On gengchen day Venus occulted the Right Law-Enforcer. In the tenth month, on renchen day, Venus encroached upon Promoting the Worthy. In year 3, fourth month, on yichou day, Mars encroached upon the Spiritual Terrace; In the fifth month, on xinsi day, Mars encroached upon the Supreme General; On bingshen day Mars encroached upon the Right Law-Enforcer. In the seventh month, on yiyou day, the moon transgressed Room. In the twelfth month, on wushen day, glaze ice coated the trees.

In the first year of Xiande, first month, on gengyin day a great meteor fell with a thunderous roar; cattle and horses stampeded; the capital mistook it for the dawn drum and everyone beat drums in reply. In year 3, first month, on renxu day a comet appeared at Triaster. In the twelfth month, on gengwu day, a white rainbow pierced the sun. On guiyou day there was a lunar eclipse.

五代亂世，文字不完，而史官所記亦有詳略，其日、月、五星之變，大者如此。 至於氣祲之象，出沒銷散不常，尤難占據。 而五代之際，日有冠珥、環暈、纓紐、負抱、戴履、背氣，十日之中常七八，其繁不可以勝書，而背氣尤多。 天福八年正月丙戌，黃霧四塞。 九年正月乙未，大霧中二白虹相偶。 四月庚戌，大霧中有蒼白二虹。 廣順元年十一月甲子，白虹竟天。 此其尤異者也。 至於吳火出楊林江水中、閩天雨豆之類，皆非中國耳目所及者，不可得而悉書矣。
In the turbulent age of the Five Dynasties the written record is incomplete, and what the court historians recorded is itself uneven in detail; the principal phenomena of the sun, moon, and five planets are as set forth above. As for signs of vapors and atmospheric portents, their rising, fading, and dispersal are irregular and especially difficult to interpret. Yet in the Five Dynasties the sun often bore coronas, pendant rays, ring halos, knotted streamers, and the forms of bearing, embracing, wearing, and treading upon it, with back-glory especially common—seven or eight days in ten—and the profusion cannot all be recorded. In the eighth year of Tianfu, first month, on bingxu day, yellow mist closed in on every side. In year 9, first month, on yiwei day, amid heavy fog two white rainbows appeared paired together. In the fourth month, on gengxu day, amid heavy fog there appeared a blue-white and a white rainbow. In the first year of Guangshun, eleventh month, on jiazi day, a white rainbow stretched across the sky. These were among the most extraordinary. As for such things as fire rising from the Yanglin River in Wu or beans raining from the sky in Min—events beyond what the Central States could witness—they cannot all be recorded in full.
