On wuchen in the eighth month the eunuchs Zhang Rang and Duan Gui murdered He Jin; Yuan Shu, colonel of the household rapid as a tiger, then torched the inner palaces and moved against the eunuch faction. On gengwu Zhang Rang and Duan Gui abducted the young emperor and the king of Chenliu and took refuge in the Deyang Hall of the Northern Palace. Below the Vermilion Bird Gate Wu Kuang, a commander under He Jin, fought He Miao, general of chariots and cavalry; He Miao was routed and beheaded. On the day recorded as xinmo, Yuan Shao, metropolitan commandant, arrested the bogus metropolitan commandant Fan Ling, Henan Governor Xu Xiang, and every eunuch his men could find, executing them without regard to age. The historian remarks: just as the 《Basic Annals of Qin》 tells how Zhao Gao duped the Second Emperor into calling a deer a horse, Zhao Zhong and Zhang Rang tricked Emperor Ling out of climbing high towers to survey his realm; the path to ruin runs the same course. Small wonder, then, that his posthumous name should be Ling, “the numinous,” in its darker sense of dissipation!

The summation reads: Emperor Ling held a throne beyond his strength, the classic “carrying the vessel on his back while riding,” and gave himself over to the eunuchs’ brood. Every sign of ruin stood plain, as if the moral world evoked in the 《Lesser Odes》 had been erased. Deer would bed down in the frost among the palace wards where armored guards once stood.
