Emperor Aizong’s taboo name was Shouxu. He had first been Shouli, and before that Ningjiasu—Xuanzong’s third son. His mother was Empress Minghui, née Wang, of the granted Wendun clan—elder sister to Empress Rensheng. He was born at the Yi residence on the twenty-third of the eighth month, Cheng’an year 3. Rensheng had no son and reared him as her own. During Taihe he received the rank Grand Mentor of the Golden Purple Glow. When Xuanzong ascended, he was made Prince of Sui, director of the Secretariat, and then privy councilor. Early in Zhenyou Crown Prince Zhuangxian Shouzhong died. The court made his grandson Keng imperial great-grandson; he too died soon after. Fourth year, first month, jimao: Shouli was made crown prince and kept charge of the Privy Council. The edict in brief ran: "The son follows the mother’s honor. Prince of Sui Shouli stands beside the legitimate heir of the main line; fortune has settled on the Principal Consort—make him crown prince. Let the ritual offices draft the full ceremony and report." Fourth month, jiawu: on Grand Guardian of the Heir Zhang Xingxin’s advice he was given the new taboo name Shouxu. Yuanguang year 2, twelfth month, gengyin: Xuanzong died. On xinmao he took the testamentary edict and ascended before the bier. On renchen he proclaimed a great amnesty, in brief: "I follow the late emperor’s intent: whatever timely measures he meant to take but had not, take them all now. The realm already has fixed law, yet offices often break it for private feeling so men never face punishment. Hereafter, whoever has a statute on point and ignores it shall be convicted of wrongful prosecution. Men in field and town may speak plainly on war and state; even if their words sting and are not worth heeding, they shall not be punished."

Zhengda year 1, spring, first month, wuxu new moon: an edict changed the era name to Zhengda. On gengzi the emperor kept mourning lodge; officials at last began to present business. Pucha Hezhu, director of the Secretariat and acting vice minister of personnel, was sent to Heng Prefecture; Nibangu Huashan, Left Secretariat clerk, became deputy military commissioner of Zhen—two corrupt ministers were expelled, and court and country rejoiced. Yila Zhuna’abu, military commissioner of Bin, sent up a white hare. The edict read: "Worthy ministers at my side and grain in the bins—that is the supreme omen. Why trouble with this? Let the offices pay its travel costs and return it to its home ground. Let the Ministry of Rites spread this everywhere so all know my mind." On dingsi the throne ordered the court to debate restoring Hezhong Prefecture. Zhao Bingwen, minister of rites, Yang Yunyi, director of court music, and others said Shaanxi folk were still spent and could not bear corvée. The plan died. On wuwu the emperor at last held audience. Li Xi, grand minister of agriculture and defender of Ruzhou, became director of court music and acting participation councillor. Chief councillor Prince Jing Shouchun was removed and put in charge of the Office of Imperial Kin. Participation councillor Pusan Wujin was removed and made chief envoy for the imperial burial. Empress Wendun and Principal Consort Wendun were both raised to empress dowager; one palace took the name Rensheng, the other Cisheng. The hundred officials entered Longde Hall to offer congratulations. That day a great wind stripped tiles from the Duan Gate. Chisan Hexi was named acting vice privy councilor. A man in hemp mourning stood before Chengtian Gate, laughing and weeping by turns. Questioned, he said, "I laugh—laugh that among ministers and generals there is no one; I weep—weep that Jin is about to fall." The ministers asked for harsh punishment; the emperor refused: "My recent edict lets commoners speak plainly—even satire does not bring punishment." The law officers held only that the sovereign’s gate is no place for laughter or tears; he was heavily caned and dismissed. Bu Chen of Nanyang plotted rebellion and was put to death.

Left Deputy Zhang Xingxin said: “The late emperor decreed that within the realm punishment does not reach grandees and that they be ruled by shame. Grand Councillor Gao Qi drafted more than a hundred articles on punishing offending officials; I ask that the old system be restored.” The emperor did not wish to highlight the late emperor’s error and put the change into effect only in part.

Xia have long been subjects of our court; now they style themselves younger brother to make peace, and I do not even count that shameful. If we truly secure peace and settle the people, do we still want war? You should all grasp my intent.” Yila Pu’a fought Song at Guangzhou, seized several thousand horses, and returned with more than a thousand captives. Imperial clansman Wang Jianu had deliberately killed Registrar Xianyu; many powerful men sought to save him. The emperor said: “Prince Ying is my elder brother — would I dare lash one man wrongly? As sovereign, would I dare harm one innocent man? When the state is weakening, how many people do we still have, while a clansman leans on rank to kill one registrar and leave my people masterless? Now the foe is here and you refuse to fight, only to shield yourselves — if the capital alone endures, what state remains, and what will the world think of me?
