Nanjing Circuit

Nanjing Circuit was called Bianjing at the founding; in Zhenyuan 1 it became Nanjing. It had three prefectures, three jiedushi posts, eight defense commanderies, eight cishi commanderies, and 105 counties. The capital had fourteen gates: Kaiyang, Xuanren, Anli, and Pinghua. Also Tongyuan, Yizhao, Lichuan, Chongde, Yingqiu, Guangze, Shunyi, Yingshuo, Shunchang, and Guangzhi. Palace gates: outer south Nanxun; north of Nanxun, new-city Fengyi; Longjin Bridge; north Danfeng with three openings. North of Danfeng stood Zhou Bridge; just north, Wuwu Tower marked the north cross-street on the imperial avenue. East lay the Grand Temple, west the suburban altar; due north Chengtian Gate with five openings and twin towers; east the Dengwen Inspection Court, west the Dengwen Drum Court. East of the inspection court was Left Yeye Gate; south of it, the Dawn-Watch Court. West of the drum court was Right Yeye Gate; south of it, the Chief Secretariat. Straight north of Chengtian Gate stood Daqing Gate; east of it Rijing Gate, and farther east Left Shengping Gate. West of Daqing Gate was Yuehua Gate, and farther west Right Shengping Gate. The main hall was Daqing Hall, with dragon terrace before it, cinnabar terrace south, sand terrace farther south, Jiafu Tower on the east wing and Jiarui on the west. Behind Daqing stood Deyi Hall. East of the hall was Left Ascending Dragon Gate; west, Right Ascending Dragon Gate. The main gate was Longde; inside were Longde Hall, a screen wall, and a cinnabar terrace. Left of Longde Hall was East Upper Pavilion Gate; right, West Upper Pavilion Gate—both south-facing. The drum tower stood east; the bell tower west. Beyond Longde were Ren’an Gate and Ren’an Hall; east lay the Inner Service Bureau, then the Close Attendants Bureau, then Yanqi Gate (called Sahe Gate within the palace); a little south, East Tower for appointments. To the west was West Tower. Beyond Ren’an was Chunhe Hall, the principal sleeping quarters. West of Chunhe stood Snow-Fragrance Pavilion; north of it the empresses’ quarters with a tower; west, Qiong-Fragrance Pavilion; west again the Cool Quarters with a tower; northwest of that tower, Yuqing Hall. Beyond Chunhe was Funing Hall; behind it Garden Gate led within to Renzhi Hall with two Taihu rocks—left inscribed “Bestowed Divine Transport Ten-Thousand-Year Peak,” right “Jade Capital Unique Beauty Peaceful Rock”—and the hall called Mountain Villa; southwest stood Cuwei Pavilion. East of Garden Gate was Xianzhao Court; north, Emerald Peak with cave Great Purge Surging Emerald; east connected Longevity Hall, then Surging Gold Hall, then Penglai Hall. West of Longevity stood Floating Jade Hall, then Yingzhou Hall. South of Longevity Hall was Review Troops Hall, then the Inner Treasury. East of Yanqi Gate was the Imperial Kitchen Bureau, then Xuanhui Court; north of the court, Imperial Pharmacy; farther north Right Treasury, with Left Treasury to the east. East of Xuanhui Court was the Inspection Office; north, the Secretariat; farther north Hanlin Academy, Remonstrance Court, and Weapons Office. South of the Inspection Office stood Ceremonial Escort Bureau, then Imperial Carriage Bureau. South of Xuanhui Court was Arch Guard Office, then Imperial Wardrobe Bureau. Farther south stood Fanxi Gate, then Antai Gate, aligned with Left Ascending Dragon Gate. To the east was Shousheng Palace, seat of the two empress dowagers; it had been Mingjun Hall, venue for civil examinations. North of the palace lay Huiyin Court, then Yanshou Hall; a little west behind its wall, Zhensu Guard Office; east, Central Guard Office. East of Ceremonial Escort Bureau was Small Donghua Gate, site of the water clock. East of Central Guard Office was Zhisu Gate; a little southeast, General’s Office. East of Huiyin and Shousheng lay the Empress Dowager Garden; its hall Qingchun stood beside Yanshou Hall. Small Donghua faced the main Donghua Gate. Inside Donghua Gate, due north Imperial Stables; northwest Linwu Hall. North of Left Yeye Gate and south of Imperial Kitchen Bureau stood Palace Parks Office. Northwest were Imperial Brewery and Hot-Medicine Bureau. A little west of Ceremonial Protocol Office were Treasury Bureau and Objects Bureau; farther west again Sahe Gate. West of Jiarui Tower stood the Three Temples: main hall Dechang, east Wenzhao, west Guangxing. Behind Dechang lay Xuanzong’s temple. The palace west gate was Xihua, opposite Donghua; the north gate An Zhen.

Kaifeng Prefecture, upper grade. The resident commissioner doubled as prefect and as overall commander of circuit forces. Tiande 2 abolished the traveling Secretariat and established transport and judicial offices. Tiande 2 also established a commandery general’s office. It had four medicine markets and a monopoly market. Local products included beeswax, fragrant tea, heart-red dye, cinnabar-red, earthworms, and yellow cypress. In Tiande 4, households: 235,890. At the end of Taihe, households: 1,746,210. Fifteen counties and fifteen towns:

Kaifeng east, attached to the seat. It had the old Tongjin ford, Lin’ai Pass, and the Bian Canal. One town: Yanjia.

Xiangfu west, attached to the seat. It had Yue Terrace, Jun River, Shatai, Chong Terrace, Yimen Mountain, Cai River, Jinshui, Guangji River, and Hanquan River. Three towns: Chenqiao, Bajiao, and Guoqiao.

Yangwu had Shachi Pool and Heiyang Mountain. It had the Yellow River, Bian Canal, and Baigou River.

Tongxu, called Xianping under the Song, was renamed in Dading 29 to avoid clashing with Xianping Prefecture. It had Niushou walled town and Qiuting.

Taikang had Lugou, Cai River, and Wo River; one town: Cuiqiao.

Kaocheng was under Song Dongjing; before Zhenglong it belonged to Caozhou; later it was transferred here. It had Kui Hill, the Yellow River, and Huangling Mound; in Yuanguang 2 it became Tong’an Fort.

Zhecheng was ancient Zhulin; the Shouzhi site lay there. It had the Huan, Pao, and Hong rivers.

Suiyang, called Songcheng under the Song, was renamed in Chengan 5. It had Hawk-Egret Pool, Bian River, Sui River, and Huan River. One town: Geyi.

Ningling was moved in Dading 22 to the old city south of the Bian Canal levee. It had Bian River, Sui River, and Huan River.

Xiayi had the Bian and Huang rivers. One town: Huiting.

Yucheng had the Mengzhu marsh.

Shaan county seat. It had Guo Mountain, Xiantou Mountain, Three Xiao Mountains, Dizhu Mountain, the Yellow River, and Tuo River. One town: Shihao.

Lingbao had Kuafu Mountain, the Yellow River, Chousang Marsh, and the old Hangu Pass. Two towns: Qianhao and Guandong.

Hucheng had Jing Mountain, Casting Tripod Plain, Fenglin Spring, and Tripod Lake. Two towns: Sanmen and Jijin.

Fuchang was under the Song’s Henan Prefecture. It had Nüji Mountain and Jinmen Mountain. Two towns: Hancheng and Sanxiang.

Zhenyou 3 made it a jiedushi seat; the army was Baojing. Households: 55,058. Four counties, eight towns; it once had Jingshan town.

It had been under Shandong West Circuit; Dading 6 transferred it here. Households: 8,092. Four counties, six towns:

Hejian Prefecture, middle grade, general commandery, Yinghai Army. Under the Song it was Hejian commandery’s Yinghai Army. Tianhui 7 created a general commandery; under Zhenglong it became a secondary prefecture with a Yingzhou Yinghai jiedushi doubling as grand commander and a transport office; later the general commandery was restored. Its circuit’s penal commissioners handled seamless cotton, Cang salt, rush mats, horse-rush flowers, cyperus, coin-shrimps and crabs, and dried fish. Households: 31,691. Two counties, three towns:

Jiyin, the prefectural seat county. It had Mount Cao South, Dingpu Mound, Mount Zuo, Zhuxiu, the He and Fan rivers, Xiangcheng, and Zhengcheng. One town: Pushui.

Dingtao had been the Song Guangji Army; in the Xining period it was abolished and became Dingtao county. Inside the city stood the Terrace of the King of Liang. It had Mount Fang and Mount Dugu.

Dongming had first been under Nanjing; later, fleeing flood harm, it shifted to old Yuanqu territory north of the river. Later the former county seat was divided into Lanyang and Yifeng, and the old Dongming city still stood.
