When the emperor enters the gate: Palace ensemble in the Wuyi mode, "Tune of Flourishing Peace": (The ceremonial steps for entering and leaving are the same.) In this age of rising peace, ritual and ceremony first took shape. Bells ring as he arrives and halts; in solemn grace he enters the courtyard. Ministers and grand officers in their hundreds receive him with reverent care. He reverently pays homage to the ancestors, and the spirit hall finds its rest.

When the emperor ascends the hall, ascent music in the Jiazhong mode, "Tune of Flourishing Peace": (The ascent music is the same when he climbs the steps and when he is about to return to the throne seat.) Sheng and bells are arrayed; jars and goblets stand ready at the threshold. His ascent and descent show proper bearing, governed by rule and measure alone. Reverent before the bright spirits, he performs the high rites in their proper order. May he preserve it forever and receive Heaven's blessing.

When the emperor washes his hands, palace ensemble in the Wuyi mode, "Tune of Flourishing Peace": By water's power all is made pure, clean, and subtly refined. He rinses the goblets and sets out the sacrificial vessels; virtue itself shines forth. Majestic and solemn stands the awe of the ancestral temple. Fitting that the spirits should be moved to descend; blessings and good fortune return in turn.

When the emperor descends the steps, palace ensemble in the Wuyi mode, "Tune of Flourishing Peace": O august spirit hall, mirroring Heaven in clarity and light. All who attend come in solemn order, with dukes and ministers standing in support. When ritual and ceremony are fully completed, the noble man finds his peace. So timely, so gracious — may our thoughts be brought to fulfillment.

Welcoming the spirits; palace ensemble, "Tune of Coming Peace": (Three performances in the Huangzhong mode, two in the Dalü angle, two in the Dacu mode, and two in the Yingzhong mode — the lyrics are the same throughout.) The eight sounds blend in harmony; the hundred rites are performed in full. Bright virtue remains ever pure; with utmost sincerity we cherish them forever. The spirits have descended — borne on cloud chariots and wind steeds. They arrive and draw near; for a thousand sacrifices they feast at ease.

When the Minister of Works leads in the offering stand, palace ensemble in the Wuyi mode, "Tune of Abundant Peace": Victims and sacrificial beasts are brought forth; with a pure mind he conducts the rite. I shall offer and present them, consecrated in auspicious purification. Broad, plump, and rich — such offerings are what the spirits delight in. For a thousand years may they savor this offering; may the people be forever at peace.

Pouring the offering to the Founding Ancestor, palace ensemble in the Wuyi mode, "Tune of Great Origin": The wine is clear, the viands fragrant. Fragrant rises the filial sacrifice in the temple courtyard. Offerings are set before the august ancestors — come to feast, come and find peace. Symbolizing their merit and displaying their virtue — may the former ancestors hear.

Emperor De, "Tune of Great Splendor": The ten thousand regions rejoice to uphold him; the great enterprise lays its foundation. From the jade spring abundance flows; like trailing melons, glory renews itself again and again. Thus we exalt the pure sacrifice and thereby complete the established regulations. Platters and stands stand in ordered array; ever more the imperial rites attain their perfection.

Emperor An, "Tune of Great Peace": He planned the founding of the state; bearing virtue, the realm flourished. His imperial bearing was truly solemn; auspicious omens gathered about him. Bright sincerity moves the spirits to descend; accumulated virtue sends forth its flowing light. Reverently solemn stands the clear temple; bells and chime-stones ring clear.

Ancestor Xian, "Tune of Great Brightness": Only a sage could raise the state — at the very beginning of its founding. He gathered the people and transformed custom, restoring stability to the land where they dwelt. He advanced in virtue, pure and frugal, with his aim set on far-reaching designs. How timely is this illustrious sacrifice; sincerity and truth find their response.

Ancestor Zhao, "Tune of Great Accomplishment": Heaven opened the jade spring; he bequeathed blessing and fixed the foundation. He led by righteousness as his courage and bestowed virtue as his awe. Displaying martial prowess he extended the borders; his achievements tower on high. May the imperial throne flourish forever; may blessings be shared equally among all the people.

Ancestor Jing, "Tune of Great Prosperity": Greatly manifest are his grand achievements; the foundation's thread descends in prosperity. At the sage's appointed time he was born; the realm's domain was thereby expanded. Reverently solemn stands the temple shrine; the spirits descend in bright auspiciousness. Splendid are the ornate canons; for endless ages their light ever increases.

Ancestor Shi, "Tune of Great Martiality": Majestic are his campaign achievements; Heaven observes his brilliance. By awe he shook the layered realms; by virtue he brought peace and tranquility. Divine stratagems left nothing undone; the great design thereby arose. His assembled descendants perform filial sacrifice; far and wide his accomplishments shine forth.

Emperor Su, "Tune of Great Brightness": O august spirit among men — martial splendor and civil design. He assisted Ancestor Shi, winning hearts through gentleness and sweeping away all opposition. His awe shook the far and near; his transforming influence reached even to insects and fish. His radiance extends forever; he fulfilled the founding emperor's trust.

Emperor Mu, "Tune of Great Pattern": How abundant is the civil ancestor; he revered the sage and enlarged the realm's depths. In kindness, love, loyalty, and faith his canons and records shine forth clearly. May they savor this bright sacrifice; abundant blessings extend without end. The age is purely bright; may celebration flow for ten thousand years.

Emperor Kang, "Tune of Great Prosperity": Bright in perception, keen in hearing — resplendent is his divine merit. He took as model the work of past ages; the spirits descend to the high vault of Heaven. The filial descendant who holds fullness offers fragrance in rich abundance. Grant us blessing and good fortune; the imperial transforming influence grows ever higher.

Taizu, "Tune of Great Settlement": His achievements surpass Yin and Zhou; his virtue matches Tang and Yu. Heaven and humanity responded in concert; he pacified and unified the whole realm. He opened auspiciousness and bestowed abundance; he laid the foundation for an eternal design. The bright Son of Heaven reverently inherits the canons and plans.

Taizong, "Tune of Great Grace": Towering is his virtue, vast as the wild goose; in non-action he sits at the imperial screen. His throne inherited divine merit; he thoroughly tamed custom and perfected its beauty. The clear palace gathers brightness; filial and pure, timely sacrifices are performed. Reverently he sets out offerings in sincere devotion; sacrificial goblets hold fine delicacies.

Emperor Rui, "Tune of Great Harmony": The imperial ancestor opened the foundation — like King Wu of Zhou and King Tang of Yin. Ah, the sage father — the inherited virtue ever increases in radiance. He opened and blessed the great succession; long may auspiciousness flourish. Solemn and reverent is the temple offering; for ten thousand generations the seasonal sacrifices continue.

Emperor Shi, "Tune of Great Balance": The spirits have come — just now ascending the hall. Grain offerings and jade tablets stand with their libation vessels; black millet ale is fragrant. Towering are the former achievements; they open blessing without limit. For ten thousand years the seasonal sacrifices continue; filial hearts do not forget.

Emperor Zhang, "Canon of Great Eminence": Two reign cycles on the throne; the ten thousand regions are at peace and well. In civil affairs he spans Heaven and Earth; in martial affairs he subdues the distant wilds. Ritual is complete and regulations established; virtue is lofty and the enterprise flourishes. May they dwell in enjoyment of the canonical sacrifice; for endless ages without limit.

Emperor Xuan, "Tune of Great Celebration": Ah, the sage emperor — a hero of the Three Dynasties. His achievements shine before and after; his virtue covers all living beings. The civil dance withdraws and the martial dance advances; palace ensemble in the Wuyi mode, "Tune of Solemn Peace": Bright bright is the former emperor; divine martial prowess is displayed. He opened the foundation and handed down the succession; for ten thousand generations without limit. Shield and axe symbolize his achievements; majesty and bearing shine with radiance. The spirits are thereby feasted; brightly they bestow peace and well-being.

The penultimate and final offerings; Wuyi mode, "Tune of Solemn Peace": On the chosen day's blessing — the bright sacrifice is reverent alone. Majestic bearing in ascending and descending — only ritual is followed. Platters and stands stand quietly fine; harmonious are the drums and bells. May the emperor receive blessing as he observes this virtuous bearing.

When the emperor drinks the blessing, ascent music in the Jiazhong mode, "Tune of Blessing and Peace": Sacrificial victims are full and pure; grain offerings are fragrant. They come and descend, they come and enjoy — the spiritual essence is thereby displayed. Drinking this pure blessing — simple and abundant, rich and full. The civil and bright Son of Heaven — ten thousand years of life without limit.

When the offerings are removed, ascent music in the Jiazhong mode, "Tune of Abundant Peace": The filial sacrifice is solemn and harmonious; bright virtue is thereby presented. Music is performed to the ninefold completion; ritual ends with the three offerings. Ministers and grand officers in their hundreds advance the removal in timely order. Young and old bow to the ground; the spirits are thereby sent on their return.

Sending off the spirits; palace ensemble in the Huangzhong mode, "Tune of Coming Peace": Pure are these cattle and sheep; clear is this wine and ale. The three offerings are thereby concluded; the spirits have already feasted at ease. As the spirits depart — may they bestow abundant blessing. Reverently he appears before the ancestors; the spirits' hearts are joyful.

He sets out offerings and appears before the ancestors; solemnly he holds them in his heart. The hundred rites are already complete; the eight sounds blend in harmony. Both flourishing and at peace; ten thousand blessings arrive in succession.

With the towel he wipes his hands and rinses the goblets; the jade scepter and robes shine with splendor. Dark ale and great broth — virtue's stone chimes are not slight. For ten thousand years flourishing and at peace; august he sits at the imperial screen.

Towering is the capital; there stands a solemn spirit hall. The sage ruler arrives and halts; many officers follow like clouds. They come to enjoy and to offer — solemn is their bearing. About to display the great recompense — thereby showing exalted honor.

The hall's framework is accomplished — resplendent in past and present.

Ancestor Zhao, "Tune of Great Accomplishment": The eastern Yi did not attend court; the imperial ancestor was stirred to wrath. By divine martial prowess he cut them down and pacified them; he bequeathed the sage succession. As a house has its foundation, so walls and ramparts were then raised. For endless ages — Heaven's protection is greatly firm.

Towels and baskets are already set out; honored vessels present fragrance.

First offering ascending and descending the hall; Zhonglü mode, "Tune of Fine Peace": Those who come do so in solemn order; ascending and descending with reverence. Bright are the ceremonial robes; clear ring the pendant sounds. Bells and chime-stones set the rhythm — already harmonized and level. The ceremony is without error; thereby in the end there is celebration.

Tushan's excellent model, the capital chamber's fragrant emblem — her bearing and voice as if still present; the canonical sacrifice comes only at its proper time. The temple officers serve the affair — equally reverent in refined devotion. The sheng sings along the Yi shore; the crane halts at Mount Gou. The people of Taotang may be compared to these; what part has the emperor's power? — as if they follow their own course.

Within the shadow of the five clouds the imperial retinue is arrayed; the clear path allows no speck of dust. The capital people together sing the tune of rising peace; again they present the cup of ten thousand years.
