Even in ancient times the Grand Historian who ordered the ages of the realms, sorted clan names, and marked senior from junior lines could not keep the record whole. The Jin first gathered in the twelve Wanyi tribes, then took each tribe as a clan name. Court historians sometimes wrote 「Imperial Clan」, sometimes Wanyan. As for those called Wanyan: 「Wanyan」 itself split two ways: same-surname Wanyan were really distant kin, men like Shitumen and Digunai; different-surname Wanyan were really tribesmen, men like Huandu. Before Dading they were called 「Imperial Clan」; after Mingchang, to avoid the taboo on Ruizong, 「Inner Kin」—the same group in fact. Registers record personal names, not clan names; that was the rule. Emperor Xuanzong ordered that all imperial kin take the name Wanyan, and the old distinctions ceased. From Dading through Taihe, relatives within tan-mian degree and nearer were entered in the clan rolls and ranked for appointment; when one within da-gong degree or nearer died, court paused in mourning—kinship was honored in deed. After Zhenyou the pedigree books were lost; a broken outline alone remains, too fragmentary to exhaust. Here I collect what can still be sequenced and place it in these pages. Lines that attach to nothing above and hand down to nothing below cannot be entered in full.
