Emperor Wu of Han and the King of Hejian first revived Confucian learning; from the ashes they gathered what had been lost and scattered, and only a few chapters and scrolls survived. The books Liu Gengsheng collated at the Stone Canal Pavilion amounted to only a few scrolls. By the time of Liu Xin's Seven Summaries, as recorded in the Han Bibliographic Treatise, there were only 33,900 scrolls. In Later Han, scholar-officials at the Orchid Pavilion, Stone Chamber, Eastern View, and Southern Palace compiled and collected, and the number of titles and bundles gradually increased. When Dong Zhuo moved the capital, the books were loaded onto boats and sent west; bandits struck, and they were sunk in the river — only a few boatloads survived. When Cao Cao and his son gathered what had been lost, down to Jin's comprehensive compilation of all books, there were only 27,945 scrolls. When the Yongjia turmoil came, the capital at Luoyang was overrun, and scarcely a survivor remained. Official books preserved south of the Yangtze numbered 3,014 scrolls in all. By the time Xie Lingyun of Song compiled the Bibliographic Catalogue in Four Sections, there were 4,582 scrolls in all. Afterward Wang Jian again compiled a book catalogue, totaling 5,074 scrolls.

The Bibliographic Catalogue in Four Sections by Wang Liang and Xie Tiao of Southern Qi totaled 18,010 scrolls. At the end of Qi, military fires spread to the Secret Library, and the books were reduced to embers. When Emperor Yuan of Liang defeated Hou Jing, he collected public and private classics and books at Jiangling, totaling more than 70,000 scrolls. Buddhist and Daoist books were reckoned among them. When the Northern Zhou armies entered Ying, all were burned to ashes. Under Emperor Wu of Northern Zhou in the Baoding period, the imperial collection scarcely amounted to ten thousand scrolls. The books taken when Qi was conquered came to only five thousand scrolls. After the Sui conquered Chen and reunified the realm, Secretariat Director Niu Hong petitioned to recover lost texts and compile an official catalog, which came to more than thirty thousand scrolls. Emperor Yang ordered fifty duplicate sets made and ranked them in three grades. When the dynasty defeated Wang Shichong, it seized his library; much was lost in transport up the western Yellow River, yet what remained still came to eighty thousand scrolls.

From the Wude era on, as scholars continued to compile and edit texts, the number of works kept growing. During the Kaiyuan reign, the four library divisions each had its own vault, with eight bibliographic officers assigned to oversee them. The four repositories held complete sets in both capitals, for a combined total of 125,960 scrolls. All were copied on hemp paper from Yizhou. In the Academy of Assembled Worthies, the Classics used white inlaid ivory rollers with yellow silk ties and red tags; Histories used green inlaid ivory rollers with pale silk ties and green tags; Masters used carved rosewood rollers with purple ties and blue-green tags; and Collections used green ivory rollers with vermilion ties and white tags, so each division could be told apart at a glance.
