On the wushen new moon of the first month of Tiancheng 3 Mingzong received New Year congratulations at the Chongyuan Hall with the usual guard. On xinhai Kong Xun of Heyang retired as grand preceptor. On guichou Mingzong ordered a visit to Ye capital on the seventeenth. On jiayin court was canceled for the death of national university director Zhu Shousu. On bingchen court was canceled for Yuan Jianfeng of Zhennan and he was posthumously made grand marshal. On dingsi an edict cited Yao and Shun's compassionate punishment and cherishing life; and Yu and Tang's confessions of fault so subjects might know their errors. On the seventeenth Hun Gong'er reported two commoners practicing pole-fighting. Mingzong first ordered Shi Jingtang to punish them. An Chonghui's morning report showed only children at play; Mingzong felt deeply ashamed of wrongful punishment. Hun Gong'er had deceived him and Shi Jingtang's review had erred, putting innocent men to death and Mingzong at fault. He cut his meals ten days to atone for the dead. Shi Jingtang, as kin, should have remonstrated; he was fined one month's salary. Hun Gong'er was given twenty strokes, stripped of rank, and exiled to Deng. Their families received fifty bolts of silk and one hundred piculs each of grain and wheat for lawful burial. Court and circuits were ordered to judge capital cases carefully, without lax precedent." Officials submitted congratulatory memorials.

On jiwei the secretariat asked that a chief minister also judge the national university. Mingzong put Cui Xie in charge. (The 《Five Dynasties Essentials》 quotes the memorial: the university director had been prized in every dynasty but lately neglected. The court should revive elegant learning to set the tone of the age. It asked one chief minister to judge the national university concurrently.)〉 On xinyou Mao Zhang became right gold spears senior general, Hua Wenqi right gold spears grand general, and Zhang Qianzhao Zheng defense commissioner. The Khitan were besieging Pingzhou. On guihai Mingzong ordered temple taboo to apply only to full characters, not partial components. Khitan envoys presented tribute and Mingzong sent Bentuo Shan with imperial gifts for the Khitan queen. On wuchen Kang Yicheng of the escort horse army became Zhennan commissioner; and Yang Hanzhang of the escort foot army received titular Ningguo commissionership. The secretariat said the old rule gave three days' leave on the fifteenth of the second month for the Mysterious Origin Emperor's birthday. On renwu court was canceled for Wei Ji and he was posthumously made rites minister. On guiwei Lu Wengi was demoted to Shizhou vice prefect on extra status. Wengi's taboo was Ye; Yu Ye had just been made works bureau director at Ye. Precedent allowed changing a post when a subordinate's name matched the chief's taboo. Wengi feuded with Cui Xie, so the secretariat did not change Yu Ye's post. After Yu Ye took office Wengi asked for extended leave. Yu Ye took post; before the Yanzhou commission envoy left, Wengi attended his announcement and promised to change bureaus when Yu Ye returned—Yu Ye hanged himself that night, so Wengi was demoted.
