Taizong, Part One
2
鹿
Taizong, styled the Filial Martial Bounty and Cultured Letters Emperor, bore the taboo name Deguang, courtesy name Dejin, and childhood name Yaogu. He was the Taizu's second son, born to Empress Chunqin of the Xiao clan. He was born in the second year of the Tang Tianfu era (902). Unusual divine light attended his birth, and hunters took a white deer and a white hawk—signs the people read as heaven's favor. Grown to manhood, he looked grave and imposing yet was by nature generous and humane, and on many matters of army and state his word prevailed.
3
西西
In the first year of Tianzan he was made Grand Marshal of All Armies and Horses Under Heaven, and soon after was ordered to lead the Six Armies south in conquest. The next year he seized Pingzhou, taking Zhao Siwen and Zhang Chong prisoner. On the homeward march he routed the Xi chieftain Husun at Arrow Mountain, and every tribe submitted. He marched again against Zhen and Ding; everywhere his host appeared, the enemy barricaded themselves and would not fight. When the army camped at Youzhou, Fu Cunshen made a stand south of the city and sent troops to intercept; he was routed, and Deputy General Pei Xin and dozens of others were taken. Following the Taizu he crushed the Yujueli tribes, subjugated the Tangut along the riverbanks, overran the garrisons of Shanxi, took the Uyghur Chanyu City, subdued Bohai in the east, and broke the Dalugu — over ten thousand li in every direction he won distinction.

Tang generals Zhang Jingda and Yang Guangyuan also drew up to the west; before their lines were fully formed, he pressed them hard. Meanwhile Xingzhou and Yanqing were cut off by hidden troops and could not aid each other — head and tail alike were stranded. Jingda and Guangyuan were routed utterly; discarded weapons piled like hills, and tens of thousands of heads were taken. Jingda fled to hold Jin'an Stockade; Yilizhen Dilu fought him and fell in battle. Jingtang came with his officials to pay homage; the Emperor took his hand and comforted him. On guimao day Jin'an was besieged. On jiachen day Dilu's son Tuli Gu succeeded as yilizhen, taking his father's style as his own name to honor his loyalty. Jingtang and his wife Lady Li led their kin in raising cups to wish the Emperor long life. When the siege of Jin'an began, picked troops were posted at key points to cut off every route by which relief might arrive. Li Congke sent Zhao Yanshou with twenty thousand men to hold Tuanbai Valley and Fan Yanguang with twenty thousand to hold Liaozhou; Fan Yanguang with twenty thousand to hold Liaozhou — Yanguang: in the biographical chapter of the New History of the Five Dynasties, fascicle 51, the name is written Yanguang. The text was altered here to avoid the taboo name of Taizong, Deguang. Zhao Dejun of Youzhou, with more than ten thousand men under his command, marched from Shangdang toward Yanshou's army to combine forces and strike. Learning that the enemy was prepared, they all halted and would not advance. Congke then led thirty thousand picked cavalry out and encamped at Heyang, personally directing the armies. Yet knowing no rescue would come, he spent his days drinking deep and singing dirges. On dingmao day Jingtang was summoned to the imperial camp and given a seat. The Emperor spoke to him at ease: "I raised an army and marched three thousand li; one battle and we were victorious — surely this is heaven's will. You look imposing and broad in capacity; you should receive these southern lands and for generations serve as my frontier vassal and support." He then ordered officials to set up an altar at Jinyang and prepare the rites of investiture.

Tiyin Dielian Wa was ordered to repel them. Tang general Zhang Jingda, besieged for more than eighty days, was cut off within and without; army stores were nearly exhausted. They washed horse dung and fed the horses splintered wood; the horses grew so hungry they ate one another's manes and tails, and when they died their flesh was eaten.
