Emperor Muzong, Filial, Peaceful, Reverent, and Upright, whose personal name was Jing and whose courtesy name was Shulü. Eldest son of Emperor Taizong, born to Empress Jing'an of the Xiao clan. In the second year of Huitong he received the title Prince of Shou'an.

In the fifth year of Tianlu, on guihai day in the ninth month of autumn, Shizong was assassinated. The rebel Chage and his accomplices were put to death. On dingmao day he took the throne; the court invested him as Emperor of Heavenly Accord and changed the era name to Yingli. On wuchen day the Emperor went to the Southern Capital. That month Liu Chengxun was sent to Han to announce the Emperor's bereavement. That winter, in the eleventh month, Han, Zhou, and Southern Tang each dispatched envoys of condolence. On yihai day an edict directed that court assemblies follow the precedent of Emperor Sisheng and adopt Han court ritual. In the twelfth month, on jiachen day, Han sent envoys with bows and arrows, saddles, and horses. On renzi day Tieli and Bigude both brought tribute.

In the second year, on the wuwu new moon of the first spring month, Southern Tang sent envoys with a wax-sealed letter and ten thousand suits of rhinoceros-hide armor. On renxu day Grand Commandant Huguzhi was executed for plotting rebellion. In the second month, on guimao day, the Jurchen brought tribute. In the third month, on guihai day, Southern Tang dispatched envoys with a wax-sealed letter. On dingmao day Southern Tang sent tribute envoys again. On jiashen day Yelü Talie was made Great King of the Southern Court. That summer, on the bingxu new moon of the fourth month, the sun was eclipsed. On jihai day Tieli presented hawks and falcons for the hunt. On the bingchen new moon of the fifth month the Emperor held court. On renwu day Southern Tang sent tribute envoys. In the sixth month, on renchen day, Chief Councillor Meigude of the imperial maternal uncle's household, Hall of Promulgating Governance academician Li Han, and others plotted to flee south; the plot was discovered, and an edict publicly proclaimed their crimes. On yiwei day the Emperor sacrificed to heaven and earth. On renyin day, as Zhou invaded Han, Han sent envoys begging aid; the Emperor ordered Central Secretariat Vice Chancellor Gao Mohan to their relief. On dingwei day Helu Shi, elder brother of the wet nurse, was appointed yilijin of the Asu Shilie. That autumn, in the seventh month on yihai day, Chief Councillor Louguo, linya Dilie, Palace Attendant Shendu, langjun Haili, and others plotted rebellion and were seized where they stood. In the eighth month, on jichou day, Meigude, Louguo, and their co-conspirators were put to death; Li Han was flogged and then released. In the ninth month, on the jiayin new moon, Yun Prefecture reported auspicious grain of four stalks bearing two ears. On wuwu day an edict established an annual rite: on the anniversary of Chage's defeat, heaven was to be sacrificed to with white and black sheep and dark wine. On renxu day the Emperor hunted at Mount Tanshan. He performed the heaven sacrifice. On gengchen day the Dilie tribe brought tribute. That winter, on the jiashen new moon of the tenth month, Han sent envoys with grape wine. On jiawu day Grand Tutor Laogu and others presented white pheasants in tribute. On wushen day the Uyghurs and Kirghiz both sent tribute envoys. On the guichou new moon of the twelfth month the Emperor held court. On jisi day the earth quaked. On jimao day, at the winter solstice, the court performed the old sun-bowing rite for the first time. Commoners of Shuozhou presented a black rabbit. On the guiwei new moon of the twelfth month, Gao Mohan and Han forces laid siege to Jin Prefecture. On xinmao day, his birthday, the Emperor fed the monks and released prisoners. On jiachen day the Emperor hunted in the near suburbs. He performed sacrifices to heaven and earth. On xinhai day Prince Ming'an Anduan passed away.

In the third year, on the renwu new moon of the intercalary first spring month, Han sent envoys to give thanks after Gao Mohan had driven back the Zhou army. On the xinhai new moon of the second month an edict directed that Emperor Sisheng's old imperial seal be used. On jiazi day Grand Guardian Dilie repaired the walls of Yizhou; when Zhen Prefecture sent troops to challenge him, he drove them back. On the gengchen new moon of the third month Southern Tang sent tribute envoys with a letter for Han; the Emperor ordered it forwarded. On gengyin day the Emperor went to Ying Prefecture to play cuju. On dingyou day Han sent envoys with ball-playing equipment and horses. On gengzi day the Emperor watched the fishing at Shende Lake. That summer, in the fourth month on gengshen day, Tieli brought tribute. In the fifth month, on renyin day, Han sent envoys reporting that Zhou had destroyed the Sacred Virtue and Divine Merit stele Later Jin had erected for the late emperor, and asking that it be recarved; the Emperor assented. In the sixth month, on dingmao day, Empress Dowager Yingtian passed away. That autumn, in the seventh month, the Emperor withdrew from court. In the eighth month, on renzi day, his birthday, the Emperor released prisoners. On jiwei day Han sent envoys begging military aid. The Sanhe Wugu, Tibetans, Tuyuhun, and Bigude all sent tribute envoys. In the ninth month, on gengzi day, Han sent envoys with medicines. That winter, in the tenth month on jiyou day, Grand Preceptor Tang Gude was ordered to oversee the tomb park of the late Grand Empress Dowager. Li Huzi Wanyuan, langjun Jigan, and Dilie plotted rebellion; when the plot was uncovered, their confessions implicated Prince Taiping Yansage, linya Huage, langjun Silla, and others, and all were arrested. In the eleventh month, on xinchou day, the late empress dowager was posthumously titled Chaste and Resolute and interred at the ancestral tombs. Han dispatched envoys to attend the burial rites. That winter the court made its winter quarters at Fengsheng Prefecture. Flooding at the Southern Capital prompted an edict remitting that year's land tax.

In the fourth year, on wuyin day in the first month of spring, the Uyghurs brought tribute. On jichou day Huage, Jigan, and their co-conspirators were put to death; Wanyuan and Yansage were both released. That month Zhou's ruler Guo Wei died, and his adopted son, Prince of Jin Chai Rong, succeeded him. On the bingwu new moon of the second month, as Zhou attacked Han, Chief Councillor Yelü Dilu was ordered to their relief. On bingchen day Han sent envoys with tea and medicines. The Emperor visited the Southern Capital. That summer, in the fifth month on yihai day, when Xin and Dai prefectures rebelled against Han, Great King of the Southern Court Talie was ordered to join Dilu in suppressing the revolt. On dingyou day Talie routed Zhou general Fu Yanqing at Xinkou. In the sixth month, on guihai day, Talie presented his captives and booty. That autumn, in the seventh month on yiyou day, when Han civilians had been mistakenly seized by Liao troops, Han sent envoys asking their return, and an edict ordered every one of them restored. In the ninth month, on bingchen day, as Zhou invaded Han, Han sent envoys to report the attack. That winter, in the eleventh month, Zhangguo Army Military Governor Xiao Dilie and Grand Tutor Xu Congyun reported the victory at Xin and Dai prefectures. On the xinyou new moon of the twelfth month the Emperor visited the ancestral tombs. On gengwu day Han sent tribute envoys. That winter the court made its winter quarters at Xingguo.

In the fifth year, on the xinwei new moon of the first spring month, Bigude brought tribute. On the gengzi new moon of the second month the sun was eclipsed. On gengshen day Han sent envoys asking that an elevated title be conferred on the Emperor; the request was refused. On renxu day the Emperor went to Tan. That summer, in the fourth month on jiyou day, as Zhou invaded Han, Han sent envoys begging aid. On guichou day langjun Xiao Hailishi was made Northern Chancellery Chancellor. That autumn, in the seventh month on gengchen day, the ruler of Han fell ill and sent envoys to announce it. That winter, in the tenth month on renshen day, the Jurchen brought tribute. On dinghai day the Emperor visited Taizong's temple. On gengyin day Southern Tang sent tribute envoys. On the yiwei new moon of the eleventh month Han's ruler Liu Chong died; his son Liu Chengjun sent envoys announcing the death and asking that his succession be recognized. The Emperor sent envoys to mourn and invest the new ruler, and Liu Chengjun was thereupon enfeoffed and confirmed in succession. On the yichou new moon of the twelfth month the Emperor visited Taizu's temple. On xinsi day Han sent envoys to consult on military affairs.

In the sixth year, on dingyou day in the fifth month of summer, the Emperor visited Huai Mausoleum. In the sixth month, on jiazi day, Han sent envoys to consult on military affairs. That autumn, in the seventh month, the Emperor withdrew from court. In the ninth month, on wuzi day, the Emperor visited the ancestral tombs. That winter, in the eleventh month, on renchen day, the Biegude brought tribute. On the jiwei new moon of the twelfth month he visited Emperor Taizu's temple.

In the seventh year, on gengzi day of the first spring month, the Biegude brought tribute. On xinyou day in the second month Southern Tang sent envoys bearing a wax-sealed letter. On xinwei day he encamped at the Huang River. That summer, on the wuwu new moon of the fourth month, he returned to the Supreme Capital. Earlier the witch Xiao Gu had submitted a recipe for longevity medicine that called for human gall to be mixed in. Within a few years a great many people had been killed; when he realized the deception, on xinsi day he shot and killed her. On xinmao day in the fifth month Han sent envoys with tribute. On the bingchen new moon of the sixth month Zhou sent envoys on a friendly visit. Southern Tang sent envoys with tribute. On jiwei day in the eighth month Zhou sent envoys on a friendly visit. That autumn he did not hold court. That winter, in the tenth month, on gengshen day, he hunted at Seven Eagle Mountain. On dingsi day in the twelfth month he issued an edict to the ministers: "Those who commit crimes should be punished according to law. If I give way to rage and harm the innocent, you must remonstrate forcefully and not merely agree to my face." On xinsi day he returned to the Supreme Capital.

In the eighth year, on yichou day of the second spring month, he encamped at the Huang River. That summer, on jiayin day in the fourth month, Nanjing garrison commander Xiao Siwen captured border prefectures and counties, and the Emperor sent men to reward the troops. In the fifth month Zhou took Dongcheng County. On xinwei day in the sixth month Xiao Siwen asked for reinforcements and pleaded that the Emperor come in person to Yan. In the seventh autumn month he hunted at Zhaila Mountain. Through the ninth month he hunted deer on various mountains and did not hold court. That winter, in the eleventh month, on xinyou day, Han sent envoys reporting that Zhou had invaded again. On yichou day the envoys came again. On gengchen day in the twelfth month they came again.

In the ninth year, on wuchen day of the first spring month, he encamped at the Huang River. That summer, on bingxu day in the fourth month, Zhou invaded. On wuxu day Xiao Siwen, Nanjing garrison commander, was made grand commander of army and horse and sent to attack them. That month Zhou took the three passes of Yijin, Waqiao, and Yukou. On the yisi new moon of the fifth month Zhou captured Ying and Mo prefectures. On guihai day he went to Nanjing. On xinwei day the Zhou army withdrew. On the yihai new moon of the sixth month he held court. On wuyin day Rongcheng County was recovered. On gengshen day he went west on tour to Huai Prefecture. That month Zhou's ruler Rong died and his son Zongxun succeeded to the throne. In the seventh autumn month he sent Nanjing troops to garrison Fanyang. That winter, in the twelfth month, on wuyin day, he returned to the Supreme Capital. On gengchen day Prince Dilie, former Xuanhui commissioner Haisi, Xiao Dagan, and others plotted rebellion; when the plot was discovered they were put to interrogation. On xinsi day he sacrificed to Heaven and Earth and the imperial ancestors, announcing that the rebel conspiracy had failed. On bingshen day he summoned the ministers to discuss current affairs.

In the tenth year, in the first spring month, Zhou's Palace Front inspector Zhao Kuangyin deposed Zhou and enthroned himself, founding the state of Song. That summer, on yisi day in the fifth month, he visited Huai Mausoleum. On renzi day Han sent word that Luzhou had submitted to them. On bingyin day he returned from Huai Mausoleum. On gengshen day in the sixth month Han reported that Song troops were besieging Shizhou; Datong Army military governor Ala was dispatched with four tribes to the rescue, and Xiao Siwen was ordered to assist with troops from three tribes. On the jihai new moon of the seventh autumn month Song troops took Shizhou and Luzhou rebelled again; Han sent envoys with the news. On xinyou day Affairs commissioner Yelü Shouyuan, Grand Guardian Chu Abu, and others plotted rebellion and were executed. At Black Mountain he offered wine and dried meat in sacrifice to Heaven and Earth. In the eighth month he went to Autumn Mountain and visited Huai Prefecture. On gengwu day he killed his attendant Guge by striking him with a stone lion from the zhenyins screen. That winter, in the tenth month, on bingzi day Li Huzi Xiyin plotted rebellion; testimony implicated Li Hu, who was imprisoned and died in custody. In the eleventh month Haisi submitted a memorial from prison setting forth practical proposals.

In the eleventh year, on bingyin day in the second spring month, Xiyin was released. On xinhai day Wulizhi's son Dielage falsely accused his father of plotting rebellion and also abused the imperial relay system and killed passersby; at his father's plea he was flogged and released. On bingchen day in the third month Xiao Siwen reported that the Old Man Star had appeared and asked that an amnesty be proclaimed. On the jiazi new moon of the intercalary month he went to the Huang River. That summer, on the guisi new moon of the fourth month, there was a solar eclipse. That month he hunted deer and did not hold court. On yihai day in the fifth month Astronomical Bureau director Wang Bai, Li Zheng, and others presented the calendar. On jiawu day in the sixth month he proclaimed an amnesty. That winter, in the eleventh month, Jupiter trespassed the moon.

In the twelfth year, on jiaxu day of the first spring month, he viewed lanterns at night. On the jichou new moon of the second month Censor-in-chief Xiao Husi was made Northern Court Privy Commissioner and given paired robes, a saddle, and a horse. That summer, on gengwu day in the fifth month, because of drought he ordered his attendants to douse one another with water; before long rain indeed fell. On jiawu day in the sixth month he sacrificed at Muye Mountain and the Huang River. That autumn he hunted deer at Black Mountain and Red Mountain.

In the thirteenth year, in the first spring month, from dingsi day he drank heavily day and night for nine days. On bingyin day, as Song sought to fortify Yijin Pass, he ordered Nanjing garrison commander Gao Xun and army commander Cui Tingxun to harass them with troops. On guiyou day he killed beast keeper Haili. On gengyin day in the second month Han sent envoys reporting that they wished to patrol the border and asking that Liao make a show of support. On renchen day he went to the Huang River. On guisi day he watched the ministers shoot and granted gifts according to rank. On yisi day the Old Man Star appeared. On the guichou new moon of the third month he killed deer keeper Miliji and had his head displayed as a warning to the deer keepers. That summer, on renyin day in the fourth month, he hunted at the Huang River. On renxu day in the fifth month he inspected a newborn spotted-deer fawn presented by Wolanguo. On guiwei day in the sixth month an attendant injured a roe deer, and the Emperor had him beaten to death. On jiashen day he killed roe deer keeper Xiamar. On renchen day he ordered every circuit to review prisoners on record. On the xinhai new moon of the seventh autumn month Han reported a Song invasion. On yichou day he offered seasonal delicacies at the ancestral temple. On jiashen day in the eighth month, on his birthday, he released the hawks and falcons of the Five Wards. On wuxu day he went to nearby mountains, called deer, and shot them; only after seventeen days did he return. On the gengxu new moon of the ninth month he sacrificed to Heaven and Earth with a blue ox and a white horse. He drank at a field encampment and kept at it all night long. On xinhai day he sacrificed to Heaven and Earth with wine and dried meat, then drank heavily through the night again. That winter, in the tenth month, on bingshen day, Han reported a Song invasion. On gengwu day in the eleventh month he hunted and drank at a forester's home for four days altogether. On wuzi day in the eleventh month he shot wild deer and granted the foresters gifts according to rank. On gengyin day he killed pig keeper Hezhu.
