The eulogy says: Muzong held the throne for eighteen years; he saw through the witch's fraud and had her killed, and he urgently warned his ministers against arbitrary punishments — he was not without understanding. Yet he gave himself over to drink and hunted without end. If goose scouts failed to return on time he applied branding irons and iron combs; when he took ducks he was so delighted that he lifted the hawk-ward order for facial tattooing. Reward and punishment followed no consistent rule; he ignored the business of government, yet his appetite for bloodshed never slackened. That the revolt sprang from men at his very side was only to be expected!
