The Emperor Jingzong, posthumous title Xiaocheng Kangjing, personal name Xian, courtesy name Xianning, childhood name Mingyi. He was the second son of Emperor Shizong; his mother was Empress Huaijie of the Xiao clan. During the Chaige Rebellion the Emperor was only four years old. After Muzong ascended the throne, he was raised in Yongxing Palace. Once he came of age, Muzong drank heavily and neglected governance. One day the Emperor spoke with Han Kuangsi about current affairs, and Yelü Xianshi cut him off. The Emperor took the hint and said no more.

In the nineteenth year of Yingli, on wuchen day in the first spring month, he came for an audience; Muzong said, "My son is already grown and may be entrusted with government. On jisi day Muzong was assassinated; the Emperor led Flying Dragon Commissioner Nüli, Palace Attendant Xiao Siwen, and Southern Chancellery Commissioner Gao Xun at the head of a thousand armored horsemen in haste to the scene. At dawn he reached the traveling palace and wept in deep grief. The ministers urged him to ascend, and he took the throne before the coffin. The officials submitted the honorific title Emperor Tianzan; a grand amnesty was proclaimed and the era name was changed to Baoning. Palace Front Inspector Yelü Yila and right Pishi xiangwen Xiao Wulizhi were beheaded for lax palace security. In the third month, on bingxu day, he entered the Supreme Capital and appointed Xiao Siwen Northern Chancellery Commissioner. Prince of Taiping Yansage fled into Shato. On jichou day yilijin Nianmugun was put to death for secretly siding with Yansage. On guisi day Yansage came to court and submitted. On jiawu day Northern Chancellery Commissioner Xiao Siwen was also made Northern Prime Minister. On jihai day Southern Chancellery Commissioner Gao Xun was enfeoffed as Prince of Qin. That summer, on the wushen new moon of the fourth month, Prince of Taiping Yansage was advanced to Prince of Qi; Prince of Zhao Xiyin was renamed Prince of Song; Longxian was made Prince of Ping, Shao Prince of Wu, Daoyin Prince of Shu, Bishe Prince of Yue, Dilie Prince of Ji, and Wan Prince of Wei. In the fifth month, on wuyin day, Consort Xiao of the Xiao clan was made empress. On bingshen day the Emperor shot the willow branch to pray for rain. The officials asked that the Emperor's birthday be declared the Tianqing Festival, and the request was granted. On renyin day Han sent Li Kuangbi, Liu Jiwen, Li Yuansu, and others to offer congratulations on the accession. That winter, in the tenth month, the Emperor traveled east to Congtan. In the eleventh month, on the jiachen new moon, he performed the fire-wood enthronement rite, sacrificed to Mount Muye, and encamped at Crane Valley. On yisi day Xiao Siwen was enfeoffed as Prince of Wei, and Northern Grand Prince Wuzhi was promoted to yuyue.

In the second year, on dingwei day in the first spring month, the Emperor went to the Huang River. That summer, in the fourth month, he visited the Eastern Capital and made offerings at the temples of the Abdication Emperor and Shizong. In the fifth month, on guichou day, the Emperor traveled west. On yimao day the court halted at Pansdao Ridge, where bandits murdered Northern Chancellery Commissioner Xiao Siwen. In the sixth month the Emperor returned to the Supreme Capital. That autumn, in the seventh month, right Pishi xiangwen Xianshi was appointed Northern Chancellery Commissioner. In the ninth month, on xinchou day, proof was obtained that the empress's uncle Xiao Haizhi and Haili had murdered Xiao Siwen; both were put to death, and Siwen's brother Shendu was banished to Huanglong Prefecture. That winter, in the twelfth month on gengwu day, Han sent tribute envoys.

In the third year, on jiayin day in the first spring month, right yilijin Xidi sent men with captives taken from Dilie; an edict rewarded the officers and soldiers who had earned merit. On gengshen day the Petition Drum Office was established. On xinyou day Southern Capital Military Commissioner Han Kuangmei, Duke of Wei, was enfeoffed as Prince of Ye. In the second month, on guiyou day, the Emperor traveled east. On renwu day a duo'e commissioner was dispatched to the Uighurs. On jichou day the Emperor sacrificed a green ox and white horse to heaven and earth. In the third month, on dingwei day, Flying Dragon Commissioner Nüli was appointed chief steward of the Khitan traveling palace. That summer, in the fourth month on dingmao day, Shizong's consorts Chuoluo and Puge were executed for sorcery. On jimao day the Emperor sacrificed to Mount Muye and performed the rebirth rite. On bingxu day the Emperor returned from the eastern tour. On wuzi day Xiao Shendu was put to death. In the sixth month, on bingzi day, Han sent envoys to inquire after the Emperor's health, and such missions thereafter arrived every month. On dingchou day the Uighurs sent tribute envoys. That autumn, in the seventh month on xinchou day, Northern Chancellery Commissioner Xianshi was appointed Northwest Route pacification commissioner. In the eighth month, on jiaxu day, the Emperor went to Autumn Mountain. On xinmao day the Emperor sacrificed at the tomb of his elder brother Hou, who was posthumously enfeoffed as crown prince with the posthumous title Zhuangsheng. In the ninth month, on yisi day, the wet-nurse fathers Palace Attendant Daliedie, Grand Guardian Chubu, Grand Guardian Po'er, nurse Huishi, yaya, and others received grants of households, cattle, and sheep according to rank. Envoys from the former princely residence were also organized as the tame-horse section, with officials appointed to oversee it. On renzi day the Emperor visited Guihua Prefecture. On jiayin day the Emperor went to the Southern Capital. That winter, in the tenth month on jisi day, black and white sheep were sacrificed to the spirits. On guiwei day Han sent tribute envoys. On bingxu day the Biegude and Tuyuhun sent tribute. In the eleventh month, on gengzi day, yuyue Yan Nili of Luchu River and others led four hundred fifty households to submit and petitioned to be enrolled in palace registers. An edict kept their households and assigned them to the Dunmu, Jiqing, and Yongxing palaces; they were richly rewarded and sent home. In the twelfth month, on guiyou day, the Emperor sacrificed a green ox and white horse to heaven and earth. On jichou day Prince Longxu was born. That winter the court made its winter quarters at Jinchuan.

In the fifth year, on jiazi day in the first spring month, tithen Xiuge attacked the Tangut, routed them, and reported the number of captives taken. Han sent tribute envoys. On gengwu day the Emperor mounted the Five Phoenix Tower to view the lanterns. In the second month, on dinghai day, the attendant Shiluli accidentally touched the spirit banner; though the law called for death, he was caned and released. On renchen day Prince of Yue Bishe presented the count of Tangut captives taken. On wushen day the Emperor sacrificed a green ox and white horse to heaven and earth. On xinhai day the Emperor visited New City. On the yimao new moon of the third month the Emperor again visited New City. The empress's grandfather Humuli was posthumously enfeoffed as Prince of Han; bos Huolugu was granted the concurrent title Chief Councillor, and Niguzhi concurrent Palace Attendant. That summer, in the fourth month on bingshen day, a white vapor appeared in the daytime sky. In the fifth month, on guihai day, yuyue Wuzhi died; court was suspended for three days. On xinwei day the Jurchen raided the frontier, killing supervisors Daliedie and Zhuaolawuilu and seizing cattle and horses from the border population. On jimao day the Asalan Uighurs sent tribute. In the sixth month, on gengyin day, the Jurchen chancellor and yilijin came to court. On bingshen day Han sent envoys to report on affairs with Song. That autumn, in the seventh month on gengchen day, Baoda Army Military Commissioner Yelü Xielidi was appointed Left Chancellor of the Central Secretariat. That month the court encamped at Swallow City. In the ninth month, on renzi day, Biegude tribal chief Helutalan sent tribute. That winter, in the tenth month on dingyou day, the Emperor went to the Southern Capital. In the eleventh month, on the xinhai new moon, Xiaoge, Huage, Xingu, and other Yingli-era rebels among the attendants were at last captured and put to death. In the twelfth month, on wuxu day, Han planned to change its era name and sent envoys to seek imperial approval. That month the Emperor went to Guihua Prefecture.

In the sixth year, on guiwei day in the first spring month, the Emperor visited the Southern Capital. In the third month Song sent envoys seeking peace; Youzhou Prefecture prefect Yelü Changzhu was also made Palace Attendant to negotiate terms with Song. That summer, in the fourth month, Prince of Song Xiyin was deposed for plotting rebellion. That autumn, on the dingwei new moon of the seventh month, Gate Commissioner Zhuogu was also made honorary Grand Marshal and Censor-in-Chief; his son Haili, who had reported Xiyin's conspiracy, was remotely appointed Defense Commissioner of Long Prefecture. On gengshen day the Emperor hunted at Level Ground Pine Forest. That winter, on the yihai new moon of the tenth month, the Emperor returned to the Supreme Capital. In the twelfth month, on wuzi day, the monk Zhaomin was appointed chief overseer of monks and nuns in the Three Capitals and all circuits and was also made Palace Attendant.

In the seventh year, on the jiaxu new moon of the first spring month, Song sent envoys to offer congratulations. On renyin day the Emperor performed the full-moon sacrifice at Mount Muye. In the second month, on guihai day, Han's Yanmen Military Commissioner Liu Jiwen came to court. He presented local products in tribute. On bingyin day the Emperor sacrificed a green ox and white horse to heaven and earth. In the third month, on renwu day, Yelü Susa and others presented Tangut captives, which were distributed among the ministers. That summer, in the fourth month, langjun Shansi was dispatched as envoy to Song. On jiyou day he offered sacrifice at Mount Muye. On xinhai day he performed the willow-shooting rite to pray for rain. He went to Pinbi Marsh for his summer quarters. On bingxu day in the fifth month he sacrificed to the divine aunt. In the seventh autumn month Huanglong Prefecture garrison officer Yan Yan killed superintendent Zhang Ju and rebelled; commissary Yelü Helibi was sent to suppress him. In the ninth month Yan Yan was defeated at the Zhi River and his brother Anbo was dispatched in pursuit. Yan Yan fled and held Wurena city; Anbo then withdrew, and more than a thousand households of the remnant force were settled behind walls at Tong Prefecture. That autumn he returned from Pinbi Marsh. In the tenth winter month he ice-fished on the Tu River.

In the eighth year, on guiyou day in the first spring month, Song sent envoys on a diplomatic visit. On renyin day in the second month he instructed the Hanlin academicians that in official records the empress's pronouncements were also to use "I" — both zhen and yu — and this was established as fixed convention. On xinwei day in the third month he dispatched five envoys to inquire throughout the realm after widowers, widows, orphans, and the solitary, as well as the poor who had lost their positions, and granted them relief. In the sixth summer month Southwest circuit pacification commissioner Yelü Xiezhen was appointed Northern Court Great King. On bingyin day, the first of the seventh autumn month, Prince of Ning Zhimel's wife Anzhi was executed and Zhimel, Gao Xun, and others were removed from office. On xinwei day Song sent envoys to offer congratulations on the Tianqing Festival. On guimao day in the eighth month Han sent envoys reporting that for the Tianqing Festival they had held an unbounded assembly, fed the monks, and prayed for blessings. On dingwei day he went to Autumn Mountain. On jiyou day Han sent word reporting developments in Song affairs. That month Jurchen raided the eastern border of Guide Prefecture. On jisi day in the ninth month he visited Huai Mausoleum. On xinwei day Eastern Capital garrison commander Chalin and xiangwen He reported that Jurchen had struck five stockades in Gui Prefecture and withdrawn after plundering. On yihai day the Biegude brought tribute. On renwu day Han, under attack by Song, sent envoys begging aid; Southern Court chancellor Yelü Sha and Prince of Ji Delie were ordered to march to their relief. On wuzi day Han reported that Song troops were pressing the frontier and sent imperial son-in-law commander Lu Jun to notify the court. On xinchou day in the tenth winter month Han sent envoys to thank the court after Liao troops had driven back the Song army. On bingzi day in the eleventh month Song ruler Zhao Kuangyin died; his brother Zhao Kuangyi took the throne himself and sent envoys to announce the fact. On xinmao day langjun Wang Liu, tamasa Niemugu, and others were dispatched to Song to offer mourning condolences. On renyin day in the twelfth month Xiao Zhigu and Ma Zhe were sent to congratulate Song on the new ruler's accession. On dingwei day Han reported that Song troops had again crossed the border and stripped their military stores. They also begged grain as assistance. On wuwu day an edict ordered the restoration of the Ministry of Rites examination hall at Nanjing. That month envoys from Kirghiz arrived with tribute.
