Your servant sees three reasons this is unwise: ruler and subject divide into teams and compete; when the ruler wins a minister steals the credit, and when the ruler loses the ministers rejoice — a first objection; Players weave back and forth and block one another, competitive spirits flare up, and ritual deportment is cast aside; if one lunges for the mallet and brushes the imperial robe by mistake, the minister has already lost propriety yet the ruler can hardly reprove him — a second objection; To treat lightly the dignity of the sovereign and pursue the amusement of a broad field — though the ground looks level it is very hard, and though the horses are good they can still start and stumble; in the rush of play control may be lost — can the sacred person truly escape harm? Would the Empress Dowager not be alarmed and afraid? That is the third objection. Your servant hopes Your Majesty will reflect on the weight of succession and cease this dangerous game."
