In the twenty-eighth year of Tonghe, on the xinhai new moon of the first spring month the court declined congratulatory rites. On jiayin day the Emperor went to Qian Mausoleum. On guiyou day the late Empress Dowager's coffin was enshrined at the Temporary Enclosure Hall in Qian Prefecture. On bingxu day of the second month Song sent Wang Sui, Wang Ru, and others to offer mourning sacrifices. On jihai day Goryeo sent Wei Shouyu and others to present offerings. That month Left Dragon-Tiger Guard senior general Xiao Hezhuo was sent with the late Empress Dowager's belongings to Song, while Linhai Army military commissioner Xiao Xulie and Left Leading Army Guard senior general Zhang Chongji were dispatched to thank Song for its mourning envoys. On guimao day of the third month the late Empress Dowager was given the posthumous title Empress Shenshen Xuanxian. That month Song and Goryeo sent envoys to attend the burial. On jiazi day of the fourth summer month the Empress Dowager was buried at Qian Mausoleum. Grand Chancellor Yelü Dechang was granted the name Longyun. On gengwu day he was granted a residence and land for burial accompaniment. On the jimao new moon of the fifth month the court went to the Central Capital. On xinmao day the court took the summer retreat at Qijin Mountain. On yisi day Northwestern Pacification commissioner Xiao Tuyu reported an attack on the Ganzhou Uyghur in which Xiaozhou was taken and its entire population captured. An edict ordered the old city at Turuikou repaired and populated. On bingwu day Goryeo Western Capital governor Kang Zhao murdered King Song and installed Song's cousin King Xun without authorization; an edict ordered all circuits to ready arms for an eastern expedition. On wushen day in the eighth autumn month famine relief was distributed at Ping Prefecture. On xinhai day the court visited the Central Capital. On bingyin day the Emperor visited the Xian and Qian mausoleums. On dingmao day the Emperor personally led a campaign against Goryeo and sent envoys to inform Song. Prince of Chu Longyou was left to guard the capital; Northern Chancellery chancellor and imperial son-in-law Xiao Paia was made supreme commander, and Northern Privy Chancellor Sengnu inspector general. On yiyou day of the ninth month envoys were sent to invest Western Peace King Li Dezhao as King of Xia. On xinmao day Privy Direct Academician Gao Zheng and Introducing Commissioner Han Qi were dispatched to question Goryeo King Xun. On the bingwu new moon of the tenth winter month the Jurchen presented ten thousand fine horses and asked to join the Goryeo campaign; permission was granted. King Xun sent envoys begging the army be withdrawn; the request was refused. On yiyou day of the eleventh month the main army crossed the Yalu River; Kang Zhao offered battle, was defeated, and fell back to defend Tong Prefecture. On bingxu day Kang Zhao sallied forth again; Right Pishi xiangwen Yelü Dilu captured him and vice general Li Li, pursued the enemy for several tens of li, and seized abandoned provisions, armor, and weapons. On wuzi day Tong, Huo, Gui, Ning, and other prefectures all surrendered. Xiao Paia reached Nuguda Ridge, met enemy forces, and defeated them in battle. On xinmao day King Xun sent envoys requesting an audience; the request was granted. Soldiers were forbidden to plunder captives. Administrative Clerk Ma Baoyou was made Kaegyeong garrison commander and An Prefecture regiment trainer Wang Ba vice garrison commander. Crown Prince Grand Tutor Yi Lin was sent with one thousand cavalry to escort Baoyou and the others to the capital. On renchen day garrison commander Zhuo Sizheng killed Liao envoys Han Xisun and ten others and led troops out to resist; Baoyou and the others withdrew. Yi Lin was dispatched to attack him with troops; Sizheng then fled to the Western Capital. The city was besieged for five days without being taken. The court encamped west of the city. Bohai Tuoshi, a middle-rank official of Goryeo's Ministry of Rites, came over and surrendered. On gengzi day Xiao Paia, Penu, and others were sent to attack Kaegyeong, met Goryeo troops, and defeated them. King Xun abandoned the city and fled; Kaegyeong was then burned, and the army reached Qing River before turning back.

In the twenty-ninth year, on the yihai new moon of the first spring month the army withdrew; the cities that had surrendered all rebelled again. At Nanjun Ridge valley south of Gui Prefecture it rained heavily for many days; horses and camels were exhausted and much armor and equipment was abandoned before the army could cross once the weather cleared. On jichou day the army halted at the Yalu River. On gengyin day the Empress and Prince of Chu Longyou welcomed the court at Laiyuan City. On renchen day an edict ordered all armies disbanded. On jihai day the court halted at the Eastern Capital. On jiyou day of the second month the Emperor visited the Qian and Xian mausoleums. On wuwu day captured Goryeo people were assigned to the various mausoleum temples, and the remainder were granted to imperial in-laws and senior ministers. On jimao day of the third month Grand Chancellor King of Jin Yelü Longyun died. On gengchen day Prince of Chu Longyou was made provisional Northern Privy Commissioner and Privy Direct Academician Gao Zheng Northern Privy Vice Commissioner. On gengyin day flooding at Nanjing and Ping Prefecture was met with relief. On jihai day Northern Chancellery Great King Yelü Shilu was appointed Northern Privy Commissioner and enfeoffed King of Han; Northern Chancellery langjun Yelü Shiliang was made Northern Chancellery Great King; and former Three Departments commissioner Liu Shenxing was appointed associate administrative affairs commissioner and concurrent Southern Privy Commissioner. In the fourth summer month the court took the summer retreat at Laogu Marsh. On the jiaxu new moon of the fifth month an edict ordered matters already submitted to the relevant offices to be appended to the court calendar. An edict also ordered that guilty members of tent clans be tattooed according to tribal precedent. On yiwei day Liu Shenxing was appointed Southern Privy Commissioner and Southern Chancellery chancellor Xing Baozhi was assigned to manage Southern Privy Commissioner affairs. On gengxu day of the sixth month Wei Prefecture and Li Prefecture were elevated to observation commissions. On yimao day King of Han Yelü Shilu died. On bingchen day Southern Chancellery Great King Huage was appointed Northern Privy Commissioner. On dingji day an edict ordered Northwestern Pacification commissioner and imperial son-in-law Xiao Tuyu to pacify the western frontier. Military commissioners were established for the various Zubu tribes. That autumn the court hunted at Pingdi Songlin. On the gengzi new moon of the tenth winter month the court encamped at Guangping Marsh. On jiayin day Grand Chancellor King of Jin Yelü Longyun was posthumously made Palace Secretary and given the posthumous title Wenzhong. On the gengwu new moon of the eleventh month the court visited Xian Prefecture. On the gengzi new moon of the twelfth month the court again went to Guangping Marsh. On guichou day, because Xing Baozhi, who managed Southern Privy Commissioner affairs, was advanced in years, an edict allowed him to attend court in a small cart. That month Gui and Ning Prefectures were established. That year Gao Chengyan and two others passed the palace examination.

In the first year of Kaitai, on the jisi new moon of the first spring month Song sent Zhao Xiang and Fu Chenghan with congratulations. On guiwei day Jurchen chieftains of the thirty divisions of Changbai Mountain came with tribute and asked for ranks and titles; their request was granted. On jiashen day the court encamped at Prince's Courtyard. On bingxu day the court worshipped at Muye Mountain from afar. On dinghai day Jurchen Grand Guardian Punian and others came to court. On wuzi day the court hunted at Maiheru Forest. On gengyin day sacrifice was performed at Muye Mountain. On xinmao day Yisuguan Great King Yilixi came to court. On renzi day of the second month the court encamped at Ruilu Plain. On jiaxu day of the third month Wei Prefecture was made an observation commission independent of the Wuding Army. On yihai day the court went to Wei Marsh. On dingchou day an edict enfeoffed eight imperial daughters as commandery princesses. On yiyou day an edict ordered a date chosen for the mountain-worship and great willow-shooting rites and directed Northern Chancellery chancellor and imperial son-in-law Prince of Lanling Xiao Ning and Privy Commissioner and Minister of Works Xing Baozhi to supervise the relevant offices in preparing the ritual equipment. On dinghai day Prince of Chu Longyou was re-enfeoffed as Prince of Qi and left to guard the Eastern Capital. On gengzi day of the fourth summer month Goryeo sent Cai Zhongshun asking to resume vassal status as before; an edict ordered King Xun to come to court in person. On renchen day Western Xia sent envoys presenting fine horses. On jiyou day sacrifice was offered to the Wind Lord. On xinyou day former Mengfu House changwen Xiao Fonu was appointed Left yilibi. On the wuchen new moon of the fifth month the court returned to the Upper Capital. An edict put Pei Xuangan and Xing Xiang in charge of the Ministry of Rites examinations; nineteen jinshi including Shi Jian passed and were granted degrees. Imperial son-in-law Xiao Shaozong was appointed defense commissioner of Zheng Prefecture. On yihai day Xing Baozhi was appointed military commissioner of the Datong Army. In the sixth month the court encamped at the Upper Capital. On bingzi day of the seventh autumn month Yelü Suizhen was made military commissioner of the Liaoxing Army, Suizheng Northern Chancellery xuanhui commissioner, Zhang Zhaoying Southern Chancellery xuanhui commissioner, Yelü Shouyi Upper Capital vice garrison commander, and Kou Qing military commissioner of the Zhangde Army. Yelü Shishennu and Li Cao were appointed birthday congratulation envoys to Song, and Xiao Niegun and Qi Tai New Year's Day congratulation envoys to Song. Jinshi Kang Wenzhao, Zhang Suchen, and Lang Xuanda were punished for criticizing examination supervisors Pei Xuangan and Xing Xiang for favoritism; Secretariat regular-script compiler Li Wan submitted a memorial whose language amounted to resentment and slander; all were flogged and banished, and Wan was conscripted to the River Ironworks. On the bingshen new moon of the eighth month Iron Li Nasha and others sent more than one hundred Wurang households to Bin Prefecture and were granted silk fabrics. That day Nasha asked for a Buddha image and Confucian texts; an edict granted one Protect-the-Nation Benevolent-King Buddha Image and one set each of the Book of Changes, Classic of Poetry, Book of Documents, Spring and Autumn Annals, and Record of Rites. On jiwei day Goryeo King Xun sent Tian Gongzhi with a memorial claiming illness and inability to come to court; an edict ordered the six prefectures' territory seized again. That month Prince of Qi Longyou died, and court was suspended for five days. On xinhai day of the tenth winter month the court went to the Central Capital. On dingmao day of the intercalary month Longyou was posthumously granted Grand Preceptor and given the posthumous title Renxiao. On the jiawu new moon of the eleventh month civil and military officials bestowed on the Emperor the honorific Hongwen Xuanwu Zundao Zhide Chongren Guangxiao Congrui Zhaosheng Shenzan Tianfu Emperor. A general amnesty was proclaimed and the era name was changed to Kaitai. Youdu Prefecture was renamed Xijin Prefecture, Jibei County was renamed Xijin County, Youdu County was renamed Wanping County, and grace was extended throughout the realm. On jihai day the Western Xia envoys and Eastern Head Serving Official Cao Wenbin, Lü Wengui, Dou Guiyou, Shou Rong, Wu Yuanzheng, and others were granted ranks in varying measure. On guimao day former Liaozhou clerk Zhang Tingmei, who had six generations living together, and Yikun Prefecture's Liu Xingyin, who had four generations living together, were each granted three years' tax exemption. On jiachen day Northwestern Road pacification commissioner Xiao Tuyu reported that Seven Tribes Grand Preceptor Alidi, because of resentment among his people, had killed native military commissioner Ba An and slaughtered his family in rebellion; the Zubu captured Alidi and presented him, while frontier tribes all rebelled. On bingyin day of the twelfth month stone statues of the emperors from Nanjing were ceremonially moved to Guande Hall at the Central Capital, and Emperor Jingzong and Empress Xuanxian to Wuluan Hall at the Upper Capital. On renshen day famine victims of Fengsheng Prefecture were relieved. On gengchen day the Emperor's younger brother King of Qin-Jin Longqing was granted an iron tally of privilege. On guiwei day Liu Chen reported that Palace attendant Gao Keyuan and Central Capital regent judicial assistant Li Keju handled cases fairly and clearly, and an edict ordered their exceptional promotion. On jiashen day an edict ordered that among flood victims in all circuits who had pawned sons and daughters, starting from the first month of the coming year they would pay ten cash per day in hired labor until the pawn price was worked off, then be sent home. Guizhou reported that its inhabitants had originally been relocated from Silla and had not learned writing; they requested schools be established to teach them, and the request was granted. Guide, Longhua, Yikun, Shuang, Liao, Tong, and Zu — seven prefectures — from this time received an edict beginning to levy commercial taxes. On jichou day an edict ordered all garrison towns to build proclamation towers.

In the second year, on the guisi new moon of the first spring month, Pei Xuangan was appointed Hanlin Academician-in-Attendance, Xing Xiang Supervising Secretary, Shi Yongzhong Hanlin Academician, Lü Detui Privy Council Academician, and Zhang Jian Political Affairs Attendant; Xing Baozhi was promoted to Acting Minister of Works with Extraordinary Honorific Equal to Three Councillors and Concurrent Palace Grand Secretary; Wang Jizhong was made Central Capital regent and Acting Grand Preceptor; Vice Minister of Revenue Liu Jing was promoted to Minister of Works; imperial son-in-law Xiao Shaozong was promoted to Acting Grand Preceptor; and Yelü Kongwen was promoted to Political Affairs Commissioner and enfeoffed as King of You. On dingwei day the court went to Ruilu Plain. Northern Court Privy Council Commissioner Yelü Huage was enfeoffed as King of Bin. The Ma clan was made Elegant Consort, the Geng clan Pure Consort, Palace Bed Attendant Bai Bright Consort, Palace Attire Attendant Li Gracious Consort, Palace Works Attendant Ai Fragrant Consort, and Palace Secretary Attendant Sun Harmonious Consort. On jiwei day the court reviewed prisoners. The Wugu and Dilie rebelled, and Right Pishi Xiaowen commander Yanshou led troops to suppress them. That month Dadan state troops besieged Zhen Prefecture; the prefectural army held firm and the besiegers soon withdrew. On bingzi day of the second month an edict established Maiwu River as Xiangle County, Nühe River as Shenshui County, Luojia Army as Lüshan County, Shanzi River as Fushu County, Xijia Stockade as Longshan County, Alan Valley as Quannong County, Songshan River as Songshan County, and Jindianzi as Jinyuan County. On renwu day Northern Court Privy Council Vice Commissioner Gao Zheng was sent to inspect prisons in all circuits. On the renchen new moon of the third month Huage, because the Northwestern Route was largely pacified, left troops to garrison Zhen Prefecture and went to the mobile court. On jiazi day of the fourth summer month the court worshipped the sun. An edict granted the Upper Capital's request to register more than 25,400 households from Shanyu, Talu River, Feng, Hao, and other prefectures surveyed by Han Bin, establishing ten counties including Changba, Xingren, and Baohe. On bingzi day the court went to Mianshan. On the xinmao new moon of the fifth month Huage and others were again ordered on a western campaign. On the xinyou new moon of the sixth month Censor Yelü Zizhong was sent as envoy to Goryeo to recover the six old prefectures. On renchen day of the seventh autumn month the Wugu and Dilie all recovered their former territories. On yiwei day Southwestern Road pacification commissioner and Political Affairs Commissioner Xiezhen reported that rebel Tangut tribes had all fled north of the Yellow River to Mo'nanshan; the non-rebel Hedang and Wumi tribes had occupied their lands and now had moved west again; when questioned they said they were following pasture and water, and if not dealt with early they might become a later menace. It was also heard that many rebels before and after had fled to Western Xia, which did not accept them. An edict ordered envoys sent again to ask their intent in moving west; if they returned to their former lands, they could then be reassured and pacified on the spot. The envoys brought no reply; the Emperor was angered and wished to attack them. Then an edict was sent to Li Dezhao: "Now the Tangut have rebelled; I wish to campaign west. You should strike east and not lose the pincer advantage." Orders were also given for all armies to buy fat horses at market. On dingyou day tiyin Yelü Dilie was appointed Southern Court Grand Chancellor, and Grand Commandant Wuge was appointed tiyin. On guimao day the court fished at Qugou. On wushen day an edict ordered relief for the poor using interest from Dunmu Palace funds. On jiyou day Huage and others defeated the forces of Zubu chief Wuba. On dingmao day Prince Zongxun was enfeoffed as Inner Palace tiyin. On renxu day of the eighth month Introducing Commissioner Li Yanhong was sent to grant King of Western Xia Li Dezhao and Princess Yicheng carriages and horses. On jichou day Yelü Zizhong returned from his mission to Goryeo. On the jiwei new moon of the tenth winter month the court hunted north of Piaojing. Yelü Aying and others were ordered as envoys to Song to congratulate the emperor's birthday. On xinyou day the court halted at Changbo. On bingyin day. Xiaowen commander Zhang Maliu presented a Jurchen who knew Goryeo affairs. The Emperor questioned him; he said: "Three years ago I was captured by Goryeo and served as a court official, so I know. From Kaegyeong eastward seven days' ride by horse there is a great fortress as large as Kaegyeong; rare tribute from neighboring prefectures is all stored there. South of Seung, Na, and other prefectures there are also two great fortresses with similar stores. If the great army marched by the forward route, taking Hasugwan Jurchen northward, crossing the Yalu River straight and proceeding up the great river to Gwak Prefecture to join the main road, Goryeo could be taken and possessed." The Emperor accepted it. On jiawu day of the eleventh month the court reviewed prisoners. On guichou day Privy Council Commissioner King of Bin Huage was stripped of rank and fief for faults in the western campaign and sent out as military commissioner of Datong Army. On jiazi day of the twelfth month Northern Court Great King Yelü Shiliang was made Northern Court Privy Council Commissioner and enfeoffed as King of Qi. Grand Chancellor Liu Sheng was put in charge of compiling the National History; Niu Lin was made military commissioner of Zhangguo Army; and Xiao Xiaomu was made Northwestern Road pacification commissioner. Jinshi Xianyu Maozhao and five others passed the examinations.

In the third year, on jichou day of the first spring month, the court reviewed prisoners. Zubu chief Wuba came to court and was enfeoffed as king. On yiwei day the court went to the Hun River. On dingyou day the Jurchen and Iron Li each sent envoys with tribute. That evening a comet appeared in the west. On bingwu day the court hunted on the Huang River banks. On renzi day the Emperor and Empress hunted at Ruilu Plain. On wuwu day of the second month an edict increased the monthly salaries of officials from Privy Council Commissioner downward. On jiazi day Upper Capital deputy regent Yelü Zizhong was again sent as envoy to Goryeo to recover the six old prefectures. On gengzi day of the third month Yelü Shiliang was sent to fortify Zhao Prefecture. On wushen day transport commissioners were established in Nanjing, Fengsheng, Ping, Yu, Yun, Ying, Shuo, and other prefectures. On wuwu day of the fourth summer month an edict ordered that within Nanjing's jurisdiction criminal cases should not be delayed so as not to hinder agricultural work. On guihai day the Wugu rebelled. On yihai day Shazhou Uyghur Cao Shun sent envoys with tribute. On bingzi day Northwestern Road pacification surveillance commissioner Xiao Xiaomu was appointed Northern Court Grand Chancellor. On the yiyou new moon of the fifth month the court went to Mianshan for the summer retreat. On yihai day of the sixth month the two imperial maternal clans Bali and Yishi were merged into one tent, with Yishi Irbi Xiao Dilie appointed Xiaowen commander to oversee them. On jiashen day the Emperor's nephew Hudugu was enfeoffed as Prince of Guangping Commandery. That summer an edict ordered imperial maternal clan Xiaowen commander Xiao Dilie, Eastern Capital regent Yelü Tuanshi, and others to campaign against Goryeo, building a pontoon bridge on the Yalu River and fortifying Bao, Xuanyi, Dingyuan, and other prefectures. On the yiyou new moon of the seventh autumn month the court went to Pingdi Pine Forest. On renchen day an edict ordered the Political Affairs Department and Privy Council that appointments and releases granted during drinking should not be immediately executed but reported back the next day for confirmation. On the jiayin new moon of the eighth month the court visited Shaling. On dingyou day of the ninth month the eight tribes of Dilie killed their Xiaowen commander Shaowa and all rebelled; an edict ordered Southern Court Grand Chancellor Yelü Wulage to win them over. On xinhai day several Dilie captives were released and ordered to persuade their people. On renzi day Yelü Shiliang sent envoys presenting Dilie captives. On the jiayin new moon of the tenth winter month the court visited the Central Capital. On bingzi day Standard-and-Drum Zhualacha Xiaowen commander Tiligu was made Great King of the Xi Six Divisions. Jinshi Zhang Yongxing and thirty others passed the examinations.

In the fourth year, on yiyou day of the first spring month, the court went to Ruilu Plain. On bingxu day an edict ordered Yelü Shiliang to campaign again against the Dilie. On wuzi day Xiaowen commander Bagu was ordered to dam water at Ruilu Plain in preparation for the spring hunt. On dingyou day the court hunted at Malan Marsh. On renyin day the eastern campaign began. Eastern Capital regent Shanning and Grand Secretary Nielihun reported that they had assembled the great army and Jurchen tribal troops for a divided advance; envoys were then sent carrying a secret edict to the army front. On the renzi new moon of the second month the court went to Sadi Marsh. Khotan sent tribute. On guichou day of the fourth summer month Linqiya Jianfu was made Northern Court Great King. On jiayin day Xiao Dilie and others returned from the campaign against Goryeo. On bingchen day the Hasugwan tribe requested registration of Jurchen Wang Shuzhini households previously unlisted, enrolling their adult males for taxation and corvée, and the request was granted. Privy Council Commissioner Guanning reported a great defeat of the eight tribes of Dilie; an edict ordered attendant Sala to convey commendation, performing the hand-clasp ceremony in his place. On bingyin day Yelü Shiliang and others reported the count of captives taken in defeating the Zubu. On wuchen day the court encamped at Lake Yanliu. On jisi day the Jurchen sent envoys with tribute. On renshen day Yelü Shiliang attacked the Wugu and defeated them. On jiaxu day envoys were sent to reward the officers and soldiers who had distinguished themselves. Shiliang pursued the Dilie De as far as Qingni Gorge. The Yujue had just been pacified when the court proposed resettling them inland, but they clung to their homeland and rebelled. As punishment Shiliang, once he had broken the Dilie De, slaughtered their adult males. He led his troops across the Hela River to pursue the remnants, but careless scouting let the rebel general Bokuo mass men in thick woods and fall on the Liao army unawares. The Liao army fell back a short distance and formed ranks on the river bend. That night Bokuo launched a night attack. The next day Liao reinforcements arrived; Bokuo had incited the Yujue to scatter, and Shiliang pursued them into dangerous country. Bokuo had halted in a defile to rest; scouts found him, but Shiliang failed to strike quickly and Bokuo fled on fast horses. They took his baggage train and the Yujue he had won over, resettled the Xiabaili people captured from the Dilie De, and built a town on the Luch River for them. That month Xiao Yangge married the Princess of Nanping. On xinsi day of the fifth month Liu Sheng was appointed commander-in-chief, Yelü Shiliang deputy commander, and Xiao Qulie supervisory commander for a campaign against Goryeo. Sheng had moved his household to a frontier prefecture, delaying the campaign, and was recalled. Shiliang and Qulie were given overall command and marched to attack. Yelü Dezheng was appointed military commissioner of the Liaoxing Army and Xiao Nianguli military commissioner of the Tiancheng Army. Li Zhongju died, and an edict ordered funeral gifts and relief for his family. On gengxu day of the sixth month the Emperor performed the sun-worship rite. Robes and horses were exchanged with Madugu of Shixiong as a bond of friendship. Upper Capital regent Yelü Bage was appointed deputy commissioner of the Northern Court Military Affairs Commission. In the seventh autumn month the Emperor again performed the sun-worship rite, then went to Autumn Mountain. From the eighth month through the ninth the court hunted deer, and from guichou to xinyou hunted continuously on Mount Youbai, Suishi, Taibao, Xiangying, Song Mountain, and others. On the xinchou new moon of the eleventh month associate state counselor Ma Baozhong was made concurrent commissioner of military affairs and director of the state history. Sacrifice was offered at the Xian and Qian mausoleums. Longqing was posthumously enregistered as Imperial Elder Brother. On xinhai day of the seventh autumn month the court went to Autumn Mountain. Liu Jing, Wu Shuda, Qiu Zhengji, Cheng Zhu, Nan Chengyan, and Wang Jingyun were sent along separate routes to review criminal cases. On xinyou day, at the Southwestern Pacification Commissioner's request, Ningren County was established in Sheng Prefecture.
