According to the Spring and Autumn Annals, when a royal daughter was given in marriage the event was entered in the chronicle because Lu, a state of the same surname as the Zhou king, acted as ceremonial marriage host. In ancient times a woman's personal name never left the household, and family matters were not spoken of beyond the inner quarters. Recording every princess at length in biographical chapters was not proper ritual. Yet the Liao gave sole weight to maternal kin, and princesses appear so often in annals and biographies that they must be set out here in tabular form. By ritual propriety men and women follow different lines of seniority; princesses should not be listed with imperial sons, so they are given this separate appended table.
