◎Families of Imperial Consorts Table. Han history warns of the danger consort families posed when Wang Mang seized power; Jin history records the catastrophe of the Rebellion of the Eight Princes. In the Liao annals the Yelü and Xiao families account for nearly all high officeholders; the imperial lineage and the empresses' kin were evenly matched in strength and acted as mutual safeguards of the dynasty. This may have been one workable approach to statecraft. Yet what raised them also destroyed them—a defect inherent in the system. The Khitan empresses' kin traced their origins to the Two Shimi clans, the Bali, and the Yishi. Taizu of Liao took a wife from the Shulü clan. The Shulü were originally descended from the Uyghur chieftain Nusi. In the first year of Datong (947), as Emperor Taizong prepared to withdraw from Kaifeng, he left his kinsman Xiao Han as military governor of Bianzhou and granted him the Chinese-style name Xiao Han; thereafter the Bali, Yishi, and Shulü lineages all adopted the surname Xiao in keeping with Han convention. The Bali were divided into two houses, the Great Father and Little Father lines; the Yishi likewise into the Great Elder and Little Elder lines; Emperor Shizong established his uncle Taliege as head of a separate Imperial Uncle division. All three clans held hereditary claim to the office of Northern Chancellor from Shence 2 (917), when Taizu first appointed Agu Zhi. Emperor Shengzong consolidated the Bali and Yishi imperial-uncle households into a single registry, leaving two divisions when the Separate Division is counted. Such is the full account of how the Liao empresses' kin took shape. Hence the compilation of the Families of Imperial Consorts Table. Families of Imperial Consorts Table
