In the third year of Hongwu, music for court congratulation ceremonies was established.

On ascending the hall, they played "Melody of the Soaring Dragon Prelude." When the officials performed obeisance, they played "Melody of the Gathering of Wind and Clouds." When the chief minister delivered his address, they played "Melody of Celebrating the Imperial Capital." On returning to position, when the officials again performed obeisance, they played "Melody of Rejoicing in Ascending Peace." On returning to the palace, they played "Melody of Congratulating the Holy Dynasty." All of these appear later among the nine banquet pieces.

In the twenty-sixth year the regulations were revised.

On ascending the hall, with shao music they played "Melody of Sacred Peace": "Heaven and earth, sun and moon shine bright; the eight directions and four seas celebrate great peace." Within the dragon tower and phoenix pavilion, fans open and curtains roll up as the emperor takes his place. The sage moves the spirits of heaven and earth; may he live ten thousand years; may great blessings multiply. Auspicious light and royal aura arise; he ascends the precious throne to eternal peace and tranquility.

On returning to the palace, with shao music they played "Melody of Settled Peace": "The Nine-Five soars as a sacred dragon; a thousand states and ten thousand nations reverently follow." The whip sounded three times and all bowed down; the jade pendants of dukes and ministers chimed; ceremonial fans guarded the emperor's countenance. With moderate and harmonious music, rich in tone, jade-green brocade, they bore him back under the splendid canopy to the dragon palace.

When dukes and ministers entered the gate, they played "Melody of Good Governance": "The loyal and good serve as arms and thighs; the virtue of vast Heaven receives the lord's grace; all arrayed bow toward the North Star." Imperial censer smoke coils around Fengtian Gate; the rivers, mountains, and altars of state flourish. To settle the realm, army and people, dragons and tigers meet in wind and clouds. It was later discontinued.

In the twenty-sixth year of Hongwu, music for the inner palace's New Year's Day, winter solstice, and Longevity Festival congratulation ceremonies was established.

For the inner palace, "Melody of Heavenly Fragrance and Phoenix Shao": "The precious hall gleams in the clear sky; jade hooks and pearl curtains hang; when jade goblets are raised, xiao and shao music stirs." Celebrating the great banquet, the ceremonial phoenix arrives; jade and silk from Zhaoyang all pay court tribute together. Praising filial piety and kindness, worthiness assists the wind of benevolence; songs are now in ascending peace

After the Xuande reign, music for congratulation at the Kindness Palace was additionally established.

"Melody of Heavenly Fragrance and Phoenix Shao": "Dragon tower and phoenix pavilion at rosy-cloud dawn; embroidered curtains open, heavenly fragrance rich; jade steps in spring warmth, a thousand flowers clustered." Wishing long life to the holy mother, all praise and bless. at the imperial banquet they play and offer the melody of long life. The way of earth is tranquil; all kinds are nourished; harmonious qi through the four seasons tunes the jade candle; enjoy ten thousand myriad years of peaceful blessing.

First piece: "Melody of Setting Out from Linhao," titled "Soaring Dragon Prelude": "For a thousand years China bore a sage lord; royal qi formed dragons and tigers." Drawing his sword he rose in west Huai; with brave generals and mighty armies, a hundred battles subdued strong foes.

Driving horses through cold and heat, officers and soldiers shared hardship alike. Step by step the dust of war was stilled; removing violence and settling the people; achievements like those of Tang and Wu.

Second piece: "Melody of Opening Great Peace," titled "Gathering of Wind and Clouds": "Jade fortress overlooks the river city; wind and clouds encircle the emperor's camp." Manning tower ships, dragons and tigers ranged far and wide; flying cannon and engines drove the six jia; captive generals surrendered and Hu troops were defeated.

With a laugh reining in the long whale, the three armies' courage swelled. One suit of armor, and the cosmos was clear and tranquil. From then on Chinese and barbarian returned to one rule; the imperial enterprise opened

Titled "Celebrating the Imperial Capital": "Tiger crouches, dragon coils — a fair land; the true lord opened the foundation; a thousand years' gathering of wind and clouds." A hundred thousand fierce troops stationed with iron cavalry. terrace ministers and defending generals all fled in rout.

Washing away harsh exactions and bestowing virtue and grace; alleys sang praise The royal enterprise broadly opened for ten thousand generations. the people all looked up to flourishing harmony in governance.

Fourth piece: "Melody of Cutting Down the Heroes," titled "Rejoicing in Ascending Peace": "Holding the yellow battle-axe, leveling Jingchu and clearing Wu and Yue." Clearing Wu and Yue. evening Qin, morning Jin — how many heroes there were.

Youyan, Qi, and Lu — dust of war was cleansed. Yiliang, Shu, and Long — people's hearts rejoiced. Hearts rejoiced; chariots and writing were unified; the ten thousand regions shared one track.

Long remembering the hardship of founding the enterprise. ruler and ministers once together swept the heroes of the four directions. Sleeping in the open, marching by night on horseback. enduring wind, frost, and snow. Court and countryside now — clear and tranquil, nothing amiss. employment must be of wise and sagely men. Personally diligent and frugal. for ten thousand years together guarding the royal enterprise. Of the above nine pieces, the first three are gentle and moderate, the middle four are bold and fierce, the last two are expansive and prolonged. Their melodies all follow the monthly pitch standards.

Dragons coiled around helmets; spirits welcomed the fleet On Phoenix Mountain, abandoned clouds long coiled around peak and stone.

The Great Ming true lord rose at Linhao. awed by his majesty, at one wrath in military garb.

Third month, guxian; original mode taicu shang, common name dashi; melody title "Congratulating the Holy Dynasty": "Cloud qi at dawn arose between Mang and Dang; rainbow light at night rose on Phoenix Mountain." On Jiang and Huai in one day the true lord appeared; china's thousand-year orthodox line returned.

Gazing at the sun's corner, beholding the heavenly countenance. cloud dragon and wind tiger strove to follow and climb. Ruler and ministers toiled and suffered to complete the royal enterprise. the royal enterprise vast and wide covered the hundred barbarians.

Fourth month, zhonglü; original mode wushe zhi, common name huangzhong zheng zhi; melody title "Rejoicing in Ascending Peace": "Wind and clouds dense; at Haoliang after a thousand years the true dragon emerged." The true dragon emerged. whales and crocodiles, jackals and tigers — swept away without trace.

Fifth month, ruibin; original mode guxian shang, common name zhongguan shuangdiao; melody title "Joyous Qing Dynasty": "On the central plains deer ran — heroes arose; looking back, the four suburbs had many ramparts." The heroic lord raised arms on the Huai River. officers and soldiers were all mighty.

A hundred spirits aided and protected; people's hearts rejoiced With a laugh sweeping away ants. the royal enterprise from this began.

Sixth month, linzhong; original mode jiazhong jue, common name zhonglü jue; melody title "Celebrating the Imperial Capital": "Royal qi presented auspicious signs, purple phoenix soaring; tiger roar, dragon rise; a thousand li of banners moved." The four seas rejoiced, armies and hosts cheered. at one point of the heavenly halberd wind and clouds followed.

Just then dust flew on Ru and Ying; waves rolled on Jiang and Huai The heavenly halberd vigorously raised the righteous cause. embracing divine troops, a million in all, outstanding heroes. Brave tigers by day massed at ramparts. rainbow by night coiled around bow and blade.

The river clear, the sea calm. things abundant, the people at ease. Awe reaching the Yi borderlands. virtue covering the Rong and Qiang. Eight delicacies are offered. nine tripods fragrant. Drums and bells booming. gong and zhi notes vast. Cheering the spirit, nurturing longevity. regulating yin and following yang. Preserve this distant blessing. earth long-lasting, heaven long-lasting.

Second piece, "Melody of Imperial Wind": "Imperial wind covers the eight regions; prosperous, the sound of teaching is proclaimed." Seasons harmonious, the scene bright. the Purple Forbidden opens the embroidered banquet. Dragon robes shine in the morning sun. golden censers curl auspicious smoke. Numerous dukes and marquises. robes splendid and fresh. Arranged in seats serving the cinnabar screen. bowing like stone chimes in circling. Lamb and pigkin ascend the splendid tray. jade delicacies fill square and round. At the first banquet "Southern Winds" is performed. continuing songs carry on the pieces. Jade goblets gladly raised again. bowing low, rites without fault. Together rejoicing reaches this day; o august one, ten thousand years.

Blessing extended a hundred generations. grace covering the multitude of living beings. Timely taking joy. heaven's emolument is received. A thousand autumns, ten thousand years. forever behold its completion.

Majestic majestic our Great Ming. virtue honored surpassing Han and Tang. The hundred offices cultivate the multitude of achievements. dukes and assistants regulate yin and yang. High caps, straight collars, girdle ornaments; yes and nay in the high hall Qi harmonious, wind and rain timely. fields and plots yearly abundant harvest. Offering rites past three toasts. rejoicing and pleasure truly without end.

Sixth piece, "Melody of Jinling": "Bell Mountain coils like an azure dragon; Stone City crouches like a golden tiger." A thousand years of royal qi all. now it returns to the sage lord. Six dynasties' splendor passed how many autumns. the river flows east without cease. Who says the heavenly moat divides north and south? Heroes are not merely to scoff at Cao and Liu. Our emperor once dwelt in a house at Haoliang; spirit wandering, heaven bestowed the true man's garb Singing Jinling, advancing rare delicacies; all eight tones Please observe when Han's founder used troops. he once gave Feng Yi food at the Hutuo.

Seventh piece, "Melody of Long Poplar": "Long poplar trailing green; yellow birds harmoniously calling." Lotus blooms fresh. purple swallows light and graceful. A thousand flowers bathed in dew. sun beautiful, wind clear. Timely taking joy. fragrant goblets in the hall. Pipe notes clear and sharp; silk charm cold and clear Hoary state elders. bearing admonition, bearing caution. Bright virtue alone is fragrant. handed down in the sage classics. "Tang Winds" shows warning. forever preserve the fine name. Do not pursue excessive great peace. the wise man is heeded.

The sage shows deep warning. a thousand springs hand down the command-name. Only the emperor ascends nine-five. jade food preserves honored glory. The sun slants but he has no leisure to eat. spreading virtue extending to the multitude of living beings. Heaven's kitchen prepares rich feasts; tripods and cauldrons attend to blending and cooking The accomplished man comprehends this principle. always making the five qi level. Following seasons, knowing there are limits. bright is heaven's way proceeding.
