The Changes says: 「The sage looked up to read Heaven's patterns and looked down to learn Earth's forms. 」The study of heaven goes back a very long way. When the Grand Ancestor rose by revolution and received the transfer of power, he grasped the fortune of the age. In Song's third Shengming year, Wen Xiaojian—Director of Astronomy and Master of Works—reported celestial omens and memorialized: 「From Xiaojian 1 through Shengming 3 there were ten solar eclipses, seven with the sun obscured at the top. The omen-reading says, 『This points to a ruined kingdom and a fallen ruler.』 Another gloss reads, 『The dynastic line is broken; the sovereign is in mortal danger.』 From Xiaojian 1 to Shengming 3, Venus crossed the meridian in daylight five times. The reading is, 『The realm will be overturned, the people will change kings, and a new house will rise.』 In the same span the Moon infringed on the Room and Heart mansions four times and Venus did so five times. The omen says, 『The realm will mourn—and Song will be the one.』 From Xiaojian 1 through Yongguang 1, four shooting stars appeared entering and leaving the Purple Palace. The reading is, 『The kingdom loses its lord; the throne sits empty and a ruler is driven abroad.』 From Daming 2 through Yuanhui 4, the sky appeared to split twice. The gloss runs, 『Yang is insufficient—a white rainbow pierces the sun—and the sovereign is marked for misfortune.』 From Xiaojian 2 to Daming 5, the Moon entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure. From Taiyu 1 through Shengming 3, the Moon entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure again. From Xiaojian 1 to Yuanhui 2, Venus entered the Supreme Palace Enclosure eight times and Mars did so six times. The omen reads, 『The seven luminaries leave their proper courses—a sign of ruin and death. The great lose their standing, the sovereign weakens, and a new king will rise to rule』. From Xiaojian 2 to Shengming 2, Venus and Mars each crossed the Feathered Forest asterism three times. The reading is, 『The kingdom is broken and the dynasty turns over.』 On Xiaojian 2, fourth month, day 13, Mars held the Southern Dipper and formed a gouji hook configuration. The omen says, 『The realm will change its ruling house and inaugurate a new reign era.』 On Xiaojian 3, twelfth month, day 1, Saturn, Mars, and Mercury gathered in the Southern Dipper. The reading is, 『Princes and dukes will be removed and replaced.』 On Daming 2, twelfth month, day 26, Venus infringed on Saturn in the Dipper. On the sixth year, eleventh month, day 15, Venus and Saturn gathered in the Wei mansion. The omen says, 『The Son of Heaven will lose his lands.』 On Jinghe 1, tenth month, day 8, Mars held the Supreme Palace Enclosure and formed a gouji hook configuration. The reading runs, 『Kings take it as ill-omened; the sovereign's life is unbounded; a ruler is displaced; one may become king in his stead; the realm changes its dynastic reckoning.』 On the third year of Taishi, first month, day 17, white vapor showed in the southwest, stretching east to west across half the sky; it was named Changgeng. On the sixth year, ninth month, day 27, white vapor appeared again in the southeast, two zhang in length; both were large and long in form, fiercer than a comet. The omen says, 『A sign of sweeping out the old and raising the new—a change of master; the distant term is one twelve-year cycle.』 By Shengming 3, the twelve-year cycle had run its course. On the fourth year of Taishi, fourth month, day 24, Venus infringed on Saturn in the Stomach mansion. The reading is, 『The sovereign's life is marked for misfortune.』 On the seventh year of Taishi, sixth month, day 17, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn gathered in the Eastern Well. The omen says, 『Princes and dukes will be removed and replaced.』 From Yuanhui 4 through the third month of Shengming 2, solar eclipses came in quick succession. The reading is, 『The altars of state face ruin—and kings take it as ill-omened.』 On Yuanhui 4, tenth month, day 10, Saturn held the Supreme Palace Enclosure, moving retrograde and direct for four years. The omen says, 『There is warning of a fallen sovereign; the age turns and a new king is raised.』 On Yuanhui 5, seventh month, day 1, Mars, Venus, and Mercury gathered in the Wings mansion. The reading is, 『Princes and dukes will be removed and replaced.』 On Shengming 2, sixth month, day 20, Jupiter held Dipper Establishment. Dipper Establishment is the gate where yin and yang turn over, where great amnesties and the rise of peace begin, and the root of pitch pipes, calendrics, and the seven luminaries; when the Virtue Star holds it, the realm changes its year-reckoning, the five rites are revived, and many are suddenly ennobled. On Shengming 2, tenth month, day 1, Mars held the Chariot-and-Ghost asterism. On the third year, first month, day 7, Mars held position between the two ecliptic boundaries and formed a gouji hook configuration. The omen reads: "The great will fall from court; a state will perish and its king be lost." Shengming 3, first month, eighteenth day: Mercury first appeared brightly in the west. The omen reads: "The realm will change its king." Shengming 3, fourth month: Jupiter stood in Xu and Wei, circling the Xuanxiao quarter—an omen that Qi would receive great fortune and abundant blessing." The celestial changes recorded below run from Jianyuan through Longchang, continuing the Song History. Under Jianwu the court astrologer's reports were suppressed: Emperor Ming would not let heavenly portents leak out, and from then on the record breaks off.

The compiler remarks: Sun and moon take turns in giving light—a matter of grave importance in heaven's cycles. The node lies above and the eclipse below; at the same degree they cover one another. The old teaching holds that "the sun has five kinds of eclipse"—beginning from above, below, left, right, and the center. By the old conjunction method, a solar eclipse never starts in the east: the moon approaches from the west, moves eastward, and meets the sun. At conjunction, if the node enters from without: first encounter then crossing, and the shadow bites the southwest corner; crossing first then encounter, and the shadow bites the northwest corner; if the node exits from within: first encounter then crossing, and the shadow bites the northwest corner; crossing first then encounter, and the shadow bites the southwest corner. When the sun stands right at the node, the shadow falls on the west—so an eclipse never begins in the east. A blemish within the sun itself is called a black spot, not an eclipse. Huang Xiang, Director of the Masters of Writing under Han, said: "Solar eclipses always start in the west and lunar eclipses in the east; none begin from above, below, or the center." The Spring and Autumn Annals records a solar eclipse in Duke Huan of Lu's third year that cut through the center and left top and bottom wholly black. Skeptics argued that if sun and moon are the same size, how could the smaller moon appear inside the sun? Zheng Xuan replied: "The moon was directly masking the sun, and light streamed out on every side—hence the report that the eclipse began at the center." Wang Yi objected: "If the moon masked the sun, it ought to eat the western edge first; moving quickly, it should soon pass the western limb and then bite the eastern one. Yet we see the western rim darkened while light has already returned past the eastern rim, which alone remains uncovered." Wang Yi's objection raises a serious difficulty. Earlier scholars asked: "The moon is eclipsed at full moon, when it is farthest from the sun—what could eclipse it?" Defenders answered: "The sun casts a dark vapor, and heaven has a void track always opposite the solar axis. When the moon passes through that track, the vapor covers it, and the moon is eclipsed. Even at midnight, when sun and moon stand at south and north and the earth lies directly between them, the dark vapor can still eclipse the moon, because the heavens are vast and the earth small. That dark void is like a mirror held beneath the sun: its reflected light shows in the shadow and always faces the solar axis. Hence when a star crosses it the star disappears, and when the moon crosses it the moon is eclipsed." One may still ask: "Stars and moon alike reflect the sun's light—when the moon is eclipsed, why need stars not vanish too? If something else were blocking the path, stars are never eclipsed; they share the same light yet suffer differently—why?" The reply: "The moon is yin's sovereign standing in yang's place; matched in body and crossed in force, it naturally waxes and wanes. Stars, though akin, have small and narrow bodies and light; the least harm extinguishes them, and they have no place to be eclipsed. Their thin light can fill the void, and they do not share the moon's crescent and full shapes." Another objection was raised: "Night solar eclipses are confirmed when stars vanish at night—yet when a daytime eclipse is total, why do daytime stars not appear?" The reply was: "If light sometimes strikes something, it also sometimes does not; if something is sometimes aligned, it is also sometimes not aligned. At a night eclipse the position is far off, and it sets together with what is aligned; at a day eclipse the position is near, and light returns because there is no direct strike." Another question: "Venus crossing the sky truly comes from standing far from the sun. Now at a nearer position it shines even brighter—what comparison fits?" The reply: "The two eclipse forms just discussed differ in how their circuits align; whether a star crosses the sky depends on its speed. Invoking sky-crossing to explain eclipses probably will not do."

The compiler remarks: The Monthly Ordinances place the dusk-and-dawn mid-stars among the twenty-eight lodges. Between Winnowing Basket and the Dipper the spacing runs somewhat wide. Hence at mid-spring and early autumn Establishment Star is invoked a second time, set alongside lodge degrees; it suffers encroachments again and again—yet what calamity it governs has no received interpretation. The Shi clan Star Classic says: "The Dipper presides over rank and emolument, honoring the worthy and advancing scholars—hence Establishment Star is planted as its aide. An anomaly of encroaching Establishment is not the same as one of the Dipper—" —reading the text for its import, this too is an omen for the chancellor.
