The compiler remarks: Heaven's signs should chart both the inner and outer celestial palaces—yet disasters need not run through every girdle and lodge. With the five planets' motions and the sun and moon, seven bodies rule fortune and misfortune and hold the calendar's numbers—quite apart from the ordinary lodges. The pole star stands fixed on heaven's axis while the myriad stars wheel around the sky itself. The five planets' retrograde and direct motion has nothing to do with sun and moon—so Xu Xiansi argued they were not true stars, as Yu Xi explained at length.

One night in Yongyuan year 3 the sky split open in yellow radiance; presently a crimson object like a small jar swelled until it was the size of a granary, roaring like thunder as it fell into Lake Tai. Wild pheasants all cried out, and people called it the "Wood Calamity." The compiler remarks: The Spring and Autumn Weft says, "The Heavenly Dog is like a great shooting star, with a sound; viewed, it is like fire; when it appears, the four quarters exchange volleys." The Han History says: "In the northwest are three great stars, sunlike in form, called the Heavenly Dog. When the Heavenly Dog appears, people devour one another." The Book of Heavenly Offices says: "The Heavenly Dog is shaped like the great Mirror Star." It also says: "Like a great meteor, yellow in color, with a sound. Where it stops on the ground resembles where a dog fell. Viewed, it is like blazing firelight rushing skyward. Above it is sharp, below round, like several qing of fields. When seen, blood flows for a thousand li; armies are broken and generals killed." The Han History again says: "Illumination below is the Heavenly Dog; where it descends armies rise and blood flows." Zhaoming is a star. The Luo Writ says: "When Zhaoming appears, hegemons emerge." The Pivot of the Dipole says: "Zhaoming has rays and horns—a military omen." The River Chart says: "Venus disperses as the Heavenly Dog." The Han History again says: "When a star emerges red-white and luminous, it is the Heavenly Dog; below it is small and footless; the state where it falls changes its government." The many accounts differ; which is correct remains unclear. Tracing the course of ruin and fall, must this indeed be the Heavenly Dog?

滿 [1]
In praise: the sun—a mirror forged of fire; the moon—a spirit that keeps to water. They receive and they shine forth, age upon age trading brightness for dusk. Their light drapes the vault of heaven; their forms stand ranked around the round sky. Every station holds its minister-star; every sign stands ready at the Street Gate. Disasters are born in thin falling fire; portents rise on wings that rush the sky. Yet men's fear is not forgotten—every flaw in the jade sparks quarrel. Entrust all to Heaven's way, and even the kitchen god will have his say. [1] Endnote marker.
