六月，敵船駛入廈門，求通貿易，阻之，遂開砲，來撲砲台，參將陳勝元、守備陳光福奮擊，斃其前隊數人，發砲傷敵甚眾，乃遁。 In the sixth month enemy ships entered Xiamen demanding trade. When refused, they opened fire and assaulted the batteries. Assistant Commander Chen Shengyuan and Garrison Commander Chen Guangfu fought back fiercely, killing several in the enemy vanguard and wounding many more with cannon fire until the enemy withdrew.

賊過蕪湖，福山鎮總兵陳勝元率舟師戰歿，遂無御者，長驅直抵城下，四面環攻。 After the rebels passed Wuhu, Fushan commander Chen Shengyuan led the river fleet into battle and was killed. With no one left to stop them, the rebels marched straight to the city and attacked on every side.

陳勝元，福建同安人。 Chen Shengyuan was a native of Tong'an in Fujian.

贈提督，予騎都尉世職，諡剛勇。 He was posthumously made regional commander, granted a hereditary commandant-of-cavalry title, and honored with the posthumous name Hard and Brave.
