煬帝引晟於大行前委以內衙宿衛，知門禁事，即日拜左領軍將軍。 Emperor Yang took Sheng before the late emperor's bier and entrusted him with the inner palace guard and control of the gates; that day he was made General of the Left Guards.

帝曰：「公著勤誠，朕之所悉。 The emperor said, "Your loyal service is well known to me.

大業三年，煬帝幸榆林，欲出塞外，陳兵耀武，經突厥中，指於涿郡。 In the third year of Daye (607), Emperor Yang visited Yulin and planned to march beyond the border in full array through the Türk lands toward Zhuo commandery.

晟曰：「天子行幸所在，諸侯躬親灑掃，耘除禦路，以表至敬之心。 Sheng said, "Wherever the Son of Heaven travels, lords sweep the road themselves to show utmost respect.

奴之骨肉，皆天子賜也，得效筋力，豈敢有辭？ My very flesh and bone are the Son of Heaven's gift—how dare I refuse labor?

帝聞晟策，乃益嘉焉。 The emperor heard of Sheng's scheme and praised him the more.

帝深悼惜之，賵贈甚厚。 The emperor mourned him deeply and gave lavish funeral gifts.

後突厥圍雁門，帝歎曰：「向使長孫晟在，不令匈奴至此！」 Later, when the Türks besieged Yanmen, the emperor sighed, "Had Zhangsun Sheng lived, the northern tribes would never have reached this!"
