又嘗怒河南縣令羅貫，因憑劉後譖於莊宗，俾貫非罪而死，露屍於府門，冤枉之聲，聞於遠近，斯亦良玉之微瑕也。 He also took offense at Luo Guan, magistrate of Henan County, and through Empress Liu's slander had him executed without cause and his body left at the prefecture gate; the cry of injustice spread far and wide—a small stain on an otherwise fine reputation.

河南令羅貫，方正文章之士，事全義稍慢，全義怒告劉皇后，斃貫於枯木之下，朝野冤之。 Luo Guan of Henan, a principled scholar-official, showed Quanyi slight disrespect; Quanyi complained to Empress Liu and had him killed under a dead tree, to the outrage of court and country.

羅貫，不知何許人。 Luo Guan was a man of unknown origin.

貫為人強直，正身奉法，不避權豪。 Guan was forceful and upright, held himself to the law, and never shrank from the powerful.

時宦官伶人用事，凡請托於貫者，其書盈閣，一無所報，皆以示郭崇韜，因奏其事，由是左右每言貫之失。 Eunuchs and actor-favorites held power; pleas to Guan filled his office, yet he answered none and showed them all to Guo Chongtao, who reported them to the throne; from then on the emperor's intimates constantly denounced Guan.

及貫授命，持本朝事體，奉全義稍慢，部民為府司庇護者，必奏正之。 Once Guan took office he upheld the proper forms of the new dynasty, treated Quanyi with less deference, and whenever locals were shielded by Quanyi's staff he reported them to the throne.

促令召貫至，奏曰：「臣初不奉命，請詰稟命者。」 He ordered Guan summoned at once; Guan replied, "I never received the order in the first place—question whoever reported it."

郭崇韜奏曰：「貫別無贓狀，橋道不修，法未當死。」 Guo Chongtao argued, "Guan shows no other sign of corruption; neglected roads and bridges are not a capital offense."

崇韜奏曰：「貫縱有死罪，俟款狀上奏，所司議讞，以朝典行之，死當未晚。 Chongtao urged, "Even if Guan deserves death, let him confess, let the proper offices judge, and execute him by statute—it is not yet too late to kill him.

即令伏法，曝屍於府門，冤痛之聲，聞於遠邇。 Guan was executed at once; his body was exposed at the prefectural gate, and cries of injustice rang far and wide.
