崇光知候補道岑毓英、降回總兵馬如龍可用，四年春，令參將馮世興與二人合師攻克曲靖，擒榮、連升等斬以徇，遂收馬龍、尋甸，迤東肅清，遣提督趙德光克平江外賊巢，复廣順，進克貴州，黔西大定。 Chongguang knew that expectant circuit intendant Cen Yuying and the surrendered Muslim major-general Ma Rulong were capable commanders; in the spring of 1865 he ordered brigade commander Feng Shixing to join them in a combined force that captured Qujing, seized Rong, Liansheng, and others and executed them as a warning, then recovered Malong and Xundian and pacified eastern Yunnan; he dispatched military commander Zhao Deguang to destroy rebel nests beyond the rivers, recovered Guangshun, advanced into Guizhou, and secured western Guizhou.

又云：「馬如龍求撫出於誠心，岑毓英鯁直有戰功，加以閱歷，乃有用之材。」 He also said, "Ma Rulong's seeking pacification comes from sincere intent; Cen Yuying is upright and has battle merit; with further experience he will be useful talent."

馬如龍誓欲剿滅，鐸不可，強出師，與岑毓英同敗歸，欲添調兵練，鐸复阻之。 Ma Rulong vowed to wipe Liang out, but Duo forbade it; compelled to take the field anyway, he and Cen Yuying returned defeated together; when he sought additional troops and militia, Duo blocked that as well.

回紳田慶餘議設公局，通省糧賦稅釐悉歸之，文武職官亦由公舉，鐸以非政體斥止，由是馬如龍等皆不悅。 The Hui gentryman Tian Qingyu proposed a public bureau to control all provincial grain tribute and tax levies, with civil and military officials chosen by public election; Duo rejected the plan as unconstitutional, and Ma Rulong and the others were all displeased.

馬如龍在臨安，聞警馳至，馬榮已率眾攜所掠散去。 Ma Rulong was at Lin'an; when he heard the alarm he rushed to the capital, but Ma Rong had already led his men away with their plunder.

如龍殺餘匪數十人及附亂者百餘，謂馬德新不當為總督，取關防授之銘兼署。 Rulong killed several dozen remaining bandits and more than a hundred who had joined the disorder; declaring that Ma Dexin ought not serve as governor-general, he took the official seal and entrusted Zhiming with concurrent acting authority.

之銘以巡撫讓如龍，如龍不受，遂令署提督，一切拱手聽之。 Zhiming offered the governorship to Rulong, but Rulong refused; he then had Rulong act as regional commander and handed over all authority to him.

雲南軍事分隸於馬如龍、岑毓英，崇光駐貴陽遙制之，至五年，始入滇履任。 Yunnan military affairs were divided between Ma Rulong and Cen Yuying while Chongguang directed them remotely from Guiyang; only in the fifth year did he enter Yunnan to take up his post.

馬榮已先為如龍等剿除，之銘亦死，迄未就逮雲。 Ma Rong had already been eliminated by Rulong and others; Zhiming also died, and was never brought to Yunnan to face arrest.
