雍正八年，鄂爾泰平西南夷烏蒙之亂，調官兵萬餘人，鄉兵半之，遂定東川，是為鄉兵之始。 In the eighth year of Yongzheng, Ortai put down the Wumeng rebellion in the southwestern Yi country, calling up more than ten thousand regular troops and an equal number of local militia, and thus secured Dongchuan—this is taken as the beginning of local militia service.
