太祖欲以恕爲晉陵郡，岱曰：「恕未閑從政，美錦不宜濫裁。」 The founding emperor meant to give Shu Jinling commandery; Dai said, "Shu has not yet learned how to govern—fine brocade should not be hacked at random."

太祖曰：「恕爲人，我所悉。 The founding emperor said, "I know Shu's character well enough.

太祖知岱歷任清直，至郡未幾，手敕岱曰：「大邦任重，乃未欲回換，但總戎務殷，宜須望實，今用卿爲護軍。」 The Grand Ancestor knew that Dai had been pure and upright through his successive posts. Not long after Dai reached the commandery, the Grand Ancestor wrote him a handwritten edict: "A great province is a weighty responsibility, and I had not intended to rotate and replace you yet. But supervising military affairs is demanding and requires reputation and substance, so I now appoint you General Protector of the Army."
