後得朱買臣、吾丘壽王、司馬相如、主父偃、徐樂嚴安、東方朔、枚皋、膠倉、終軍、嚴蔥奇等，並在左右。 He soon gathered Zhu Maichen, Wuqiu Shouwang, Sima Xiangru, Zhufu Yan, Xu Le, Yan An, Dongfang Shuo, Mei Gao, Jiao Cang, Zhong Jun, Yan Congqi, and the rest in his inner circle.

其尤親幸者，東方朔、枚皋、嚴助、吾丘壽王、司馬相如。 Those he favored most were Dongfang Shuo, Mei Gao, Yan Zhu, Wuqiu Shouwang, and Sima Xiangru.

久之，上疏願擊匈奴，詔問狀，壽王對良善，復召為郎。 Long afterward he offered a plan to strike the Xiongnu; the court questioned him, liked his answers, and restored him as gentleman.

上以壽王為都尉，不復置太守。 Because he held that military post, no civil governor was appointed over him.

詔賜壽王璽書曰：「子在朕前之時，知略輻湊，以為天下少雙，海內寡二。 A sealed rescript rebuked him: "At our side your counsel seemed unique under heaven—scarcely a second man in the seas.

壽王謝罪，因言其狀。 Shouwang kowtowed and explained his difficulties.

壽王對曰： Shouwang answered:

壽王獨曰非周鼎。 Wuqiu Shouwang alone said it was not the tripod of Zhou.

上聞之，召而問之，曰：「今朕得周鼎，群臣皆以為然，壽王獨以為非，何也？ The emperor called him in and demanded, "The court calls this the Zhou tripod; you alone deny it—why?

壽王對曰：「臣安敢無說！ Shouwang bowed: "How should I dare come without an argument!

是日，賜壽王黃金十斤。 That day Shouwang received ten catties of gold.

於是上以為道遠勞苦，又為百姓所患，乃使太中大夫吾丘壽王與待詔能用算者二人，舉籍阿城以南，□以東，宜春以西，提封頃畝，乃其賈直，欲除以為上林苑，屬之南山。 Weary of the long rides and the havoc among the people, he sent Wuqiu Shouwang and two mathematicians on the waiting roster to survey every registered field from south of Acheng eastward (one toponym is missing in the text) to west of Yichun, tally acreage and price, and annex the tract as the Shanglin hunting park running to the Southern Mountains.

吾丘壽王奏事，上大說稱善。 Wuqiu Shouwang's report delighted the emperor.

然遂起上林苑，如壽王所奏雲。 The Shanglin Park was built anyway, just as Wuqiu Shouwang had proposed.

是時，朝廷多賢材，上復問朔：「方今公孫丞相，兒大夫、董仲舒、夏侯始昌、司馬相如、吾丘壽王、主父偃、硃買臣、嚴助、汲黯、膠倉、終軍、嚴安、徐樂、司馬遷之倫，皆辯知閎達，溢於文辭，先生自視，何與比哉？」 The court at that time teemed with talent, and the emperor pressed Shuo again: "Consider Chancellor Gongsun Hong, Censor-in-Chief Er Kuan, Dong Zhongshu, Xiahou Shichang, Sima Xiangru, Wuqiu Shouwang, Zhufu Yan, Zhu Maichen, Yan Zhu, Ji An, Jiao Cang, Zhong Jun, Yan An, Xu Le, Sima Qian, and men of that stamp. They are learned, articulate, and prolific writers. How do you measure yourself against such company?"
