Wuzong died; Renzong ascended the throne; spring of the third year of Yanyou, when the Eastern Palace was under deliberation, Chancellor Tiemudie'er, wishing to secure his position and win favor, proposed installing Shidebala as crown prince; together with the empress dowager's favorite minister Shiliemen he slandered him before the two palaces; after long insinuation, the scheme succeeded.
Eighth month, on jiawu day at dawn, he summoned the hundred officials to assemble at Xingsheng Palace; the troops all bared their blades and proclaimed to the multitude, "The Martial Emperor had two sage sons — filial, brotherly, benevolent, and literary; all under Heaven turn their hearts to them; the Great Foundation lies with them — we must welcome and install them; whoever does not obey shall die!"
