父永，宋右光祿大夫。 His father Yong was Song right grand master of splendid happiness.

稷所生母遘疾歷時，稷始年十一，夜不解衣而養，永異之。 Ji's birth mother had long been ill; when Ji was eleven he would not unbind his clothes to nurse her—Yong marveled at this.

外從祖宋右光祿張永嘗攜內外孫侄游虎丘山，協年數歲，永撫之曰：「兒欲何戲？」 His maternal great-uncle Zhang Yong, who had served Song as Right Director of the Imperial Secretariat, once took the inner and outer grandsons and nephews to tour Tiger Hill. Xie was only a few years old; Yong stroked him and said, "Child, what would you like to play?"

永歎息曰：「顧氏興於此子。」 Yong sighed and said, "The Gu clan will rise through this child."

父永，右光祿大夫。 His father Yong was Right Household Grandee.

曉音律，宋孝武問永以太極殿前鍾聲嘶，永答「鍾有銅滓」。 Yong understood music; Emperor Xiaowu of Song asked him why the bell before the Hall of Supreme Pole sounded hoarse, and Yong answered, "The bell still has copper slag in it."

初，永拒桂陽賊於白下，潰散，阮佃夫等欲加罪，太祖固申明之，瓌由此感恩自結。 Earlier Yong had held the Guiyang rebels at Baixia and been routed; Ruan Tianfu and others wanted him punished, but the Founding Emperor spoke firmly in his defense—Gui bound himself to the throne in gratitude.

遭父喪，還吳持服。 When his father died he returned to Wu to observe mourning.

十有二月己未，尉元軍次于秺，彧將周凱、張永、沈攸之相繼退走。 In the twelfth month, on the jiwei day, Wei Yuan's army halted at Du, and Liu Yu's generals Zhou Kai, Zhang Yong, and Shen Youzhi retreated one after another.

皇興元年春正月癸巳，尉元大破張永、沈攸之於呂梁東，斬首數萬級，凍死者甚眾。 In the first month of spring of the first year of Huangxing, on the guisi day, Wei Yuan greatly defeated Zhang Yong and Shen Youzhi east of Lüliang; heads taken numbered in the tens of thousands, and very many died of cold.

永、攸之單騎走免。 Zhang Yong and Shen Youzhi fled alone on horseback and escaped.

十有二月甲午，詔曰：「頃張永迷擾，敢拒王威，暴骨原隰，殘廢不少。 In the twelfth month, on the jiawu day, an edict stated, "Recently Zhang Yong, deluded and in turmoil, dared resist the king's majesty; bones lie exposed on the plains and marshes, and the maimed and ruined are not few.

天下民一也，可敕郡縣，永軍殘廢之士，聽還江南； The people of the realm are one; let the commanderies and counties be charged: soldiers of Zhang Yong's army who are maimed and ruined are to be permitted to return south of the Yangtze;
