The Ministry of Personnel bears heavy responsibility, yet in senility he knew nothing; later he was transferred to minister of rites, retired from office, and died.

鄭玨之再主禮闈也，與鄉人趙都俱赴鄉薦，都納賄於玨，人報翌日登第，嶼聞不捷，詬來人以嚇之，玨懼，俾俱成名。 When Zheng Jue again oversaw the civil examinations, Nie and his fellow townsman Zhao Du both sought provincial recommendation. Du paid Jue a bribe, and word spread that he would pass the next day. On learning he had failed, Nie cursed the messenger in a deliberate attempt to intimidate him. Frightened, Jue saw to it that both men passed.
