The Sacred Ancestor, Emperor Ren — whose full posthumous title runs “Harmonizing with Heaven, Grandly Fortunate, Civil and Martial, Sagely and Wise, Respectful and Frugal, Generous and Liberal, Filial and Reverent, Sincere and Trustworthy, of Virtue and Merit Greatly Accomplished and Benevolent” — bore the taboo name Xuanye and was the Shunzhi Emperor’s third son. His mother was Empress Xiaokang Zhang of the Tonggiya clan. On the wushen day of the third month in Shunzhi year eleven, he was born in the Jingren Palace. He was handsome of feature, stood tall as a peak, and spoke in a deep, carrying voice. At six he went with his brothers to pay their respects and inquire after the emperor’s health. The Shunzhi Emperor asked each what he wished for. The second imperial son, Fuyuan, said, “I wish to be a worthy prince.” The emperor replied, “I wish to follow my imperial father’s example.” The Shunzhi Emperor was struck with wonder.

On the bingchen day of the first month in Shunzhi year eighteen the Shunzhi Emperor died; Xuanye ascended the throne at eight sui and the reign was titled Kangxi. By the late emperor’s will, Sonin, Suksaha, Ebilun, and Oboi were named the four regent ministers.

On the guiwei day of the second month the emperor left off mourning dress. On yiwei the guilty eunuch Wu Liangfu was put to death and the palace eunuch establishment was abolished. On bingshen Dese, son of Prince Jian of the First Rank Jidu, was permitted to inherit the princedom.

On the bingyin day of the third month an edict declared: “State law and custom differ from one age to another. The Taizu and Taizong created institutions and set laws, leaving a generous legacy to later generations. Today some provisions diverge between Manchu and Han, and some rules have been altered from earlier to later times. Let the established statutes be searched out in full, compiled into a code, and the result submitted after joint deliberation.” Thus concluded the edict.

In the fourth month sacrificial offerings and funeral rites were granted to the guard Fu Dali, who had died in service at the imperial burial. On jiashen the governor-general of Huguang was ordered to establish his headquarters at Jingzhou. On yiyou General Xian Guo’an was appointed to command the southern army at the Ding garrison in Guangxi. On bingxu Lahada was made Minister of Works. On guimao Li Weiqi, king of Annam, sent envoys with tribute. On bingwu Grand Secretary Hong Chengchou asked to retire; the request was granted and he received the hereditary office of third-class commandant of light chariots. On wushen Ma Shijun and three hundred eighty-three others were awarded jinshi honors with graded ranks according to their examination placement.

In the fifth month the provincial touring censorates were abolished. On jisi Gao Jing was appointed Minister of Works and Liu Liangzuo was made military commissioner of Jiang’an. On yihai Mo Jingyao, a renegade minister of Annam, submitted and was enfeoffed as General of Submissive Transformation.

On the jimao day of the sixth month Jiangsu governor Zhu Guozhi reported that in Suzhou circuit 13,517 gentry and officials owed land-tax arrears; the ministry was instructed to dismiss or degrade them according to the degree of offense. On xinsi ten Feiyaka villages of Heilongjiang submitted. On gengyin Ezha, son of Prince Xin of the First Rank Duoni, was permitted to inherit the princedom. On guisi Grand Secretary Fu Yijian asked to retire and was allowed to do so. On dingyou the Grand Secretariat was abolished and the three inner academies were restored. On wuxu Wu Sangui offered five tame elephants; the court refused them. An edict stopped tribute gifts from every province.

On the gengchen day of the intercalary seventh month Cheke was made Minister of Personnel and Asihan Minister of Revenue. On jiawu Fu Weilin was appointed Minister of Works. On renyin a baronage was granted to the son of Liang Huafeng, military commissioner of Su-Song.

On the jiayin day of the eighth month the Dalai Lama petitioned to open border markets; permission was given.

On the dingwei day of the ninth month Bian Sanyuan was made governor-general of Yunnan, Li Qifeng of Guangdong, Lang Tingzuo of Jiangnan, and Liang Huafeng military commissioner of Jiangnan.

On the jiyou day of the tenth month Lin Qilong was appointed grain-transport governor-general. The surrendered general Zheng Zhilong and his sons Shien and Shiyin were put to death. On xinyou the post of Shuntian governor was abolished. Yu Qi led a popular rising in Shandong; Governor Xu Wenxiu and regional commanders Li Yongsheng and Fan Chengzong were seized for investigation; Pacification Commissioner of the East Jishiha was ordered to put down the disturbance.

On the first day, bingzi, of the eleventh month the emperor offered Heaven sacrifice at the Round Mound in person. On jihai the late Shunzhi Emperor was given a place in the Imperial Ancestral Temple. On jiachen Wu Shaoxin, touring censor of Hunan, was beheaded in the marketplace for graft.

On the bingwu day of the twelfth month Wu Sangui, Prince of the West, and Pacification Commissioner Ai Xing’a reported jointly that the main force had entered Burma and that the Burmese delivered the Yongli Emperor Zhu Youlang as prisoner. The Ming commander Bai Wenxuan surrendered. The troops were withdrawn. On dingmao the Imperial Clan Court submitted the jade genealogy register.

That year disaster remissions of land tax were granted, in varying amounts, to affected districts in Zhili, Jiangnan, Henan, Zhejiang, Huguang, and Shaanxi. Korea sent envoys with incense and tribute.

In the first year of Kangxi, on the yihai day of the first month of spring, the new year opened. On yiyou the court sacrificed at the Imperial Ancestral Temple. On gengyin the services of Grand Secretary Fan Wencheng and others in establishing the dynasty were entered in the record, and their sons, including Chengmo, were appointed inner-court academicians.

On the renzi day of the second month, the Grand Empress Dowager’s birthday, the emperor led the officials in congratulatory audience.

In the third month, with the south of Yunnan pacified, victory was announced at the ancestral shrines and imperial tombs and an empire-wide amnesty was declared. On xinmao the longevity rites were observed. On jihai commissioners were sent to pacify officials and commoners newly submitted in Zhejiang, Fujian, and Guangdong.

In the fourth month of summer, on bingchen, posthumous titles were bestowed on the Taizu and Taizong.

On the wuyin day of the fifth month, at the summer solstice, the emperor sacrificed to Earth at the Square Mound in person.

Copper cash coined exceeded 290,000,000 strings. Disaster remissions of land tax were granted, in varying amounts, to affected districts in Zhili and Jiangnan. Korea sent tribute.

In Kangxi year two, on the jihai day of the first month of spring, Guangdong governor-general Lu Chongjun asked permission to hire merchant ships for troop transport; the court refused.

On bingxu an edict centralized all land tax and grain payments under the Ministry of Revenue and required every ministry and court to draw its funds from that ministry alone, fixing the rule for the future. On wuzi Wei Yijie was appointed Minister of Personnel. On jiawu the late Grand Empress Dowager Cihe received the posthumous title Empress Xiaokang Cihe Zhuangyi Gonghui Chongtian Yusheng.

In the sixth month the Shunzhi Emperor was interred at the Xiaoling, with Empresses Xiaokang and Duanjing enshrined beside him. On wushen Gong Dingzi was made left censor-in-chief. On yimao Li Sixing, son of the former Ming commander Li Dingguo, submitted. On yichou Harku was appointed military commissioner of Zhejiang.

On the guimao day of the eighth month an edict abolished the eight-legged examination essay in favor of policy questions and discursive themes, and revived the banner translation provincial examination. On jiayin Muluwa was named Pacification Commissioner of the West and Tu Hai Pacification Commissioner of Ding, to lead the guards and cooperate with the governors-general of Sichuan, Huguang, and Shaanxi against the Shunyang fugitives Li Laigang, Hao Yaoqi, and their fellows.

On the renyin day of the tenth month of winter Geng Jimao and Shi Lang, with Dutch naval allies, struck the sea rebels, captured Xiamen and the islands of Wuyu and Jinmen, and Zheng Jing withdrew to Taiwan.

In the eleventh month an edict exempted tribute envoys from all countries from tax on local products they carried. On yiyou, the winter solstice, Heaven sacrifice was offered at the Round Mound.

In the fourth month of summer, on the jihai day, the regents falsely charged that guardsman Wohe, son of Inner Minister Feiyanggu, had ridden the imperial horse without leave and that Feiyanggu had shown resentment; both were executed, their estates were confiscated, and Oboi gave the property to his brother Murima. Minister Kelantu was dispatched to the forty-seven Khorchin banners to preside at the league assembly. On the wushen day the Xiangyang supervising commissioner was abolished.

On the jiazi day of the fifth month an edict declared that prefectural and county officials who imposed unauthorized levies on the people, and their superiors who covered it up, would all be punished.

On the gengshen day of the sixth month an edict remitted tax and grain arrears dating before the fifteenth year of Shunzhi.

In the intercalary sixth month, on the yiyou day, Wang Hongzuo was appointed Minister of Punishments. On the bingxu day Han Army metropolitan officials were assigned to Han quotas for promotion and transfer.

In the seventh month of autumn, on the dingwei day, Shi Lang was made Pacifying-the-Seas General to campaign against Taiwan.

On the jiaxu day of the eighth month, Zhejiang Governor-General Zhao Tingchen reported the capture of the Ming minister Zhang Huangyan. On the jimao day Murima and Tulai reported that in the drive against Li Laiheng and Hao Yaoqi at Maolu Mountain in Xiangyang both men burned themselves to death and the rebels were pacified.

In the ninth month, on the guichou day, granary grain was issued to relieve the Eight Banners estate lands. On the yimao day Chakdan was appointed Grand Guardian of the Imperial Bodyguard.

On the renchen day of the eleventh month, the winter solstice, the emperor sacrificed to Heaven at the Circular Mound Altar. On the dingwei day Wei Yijie was made Grand Secretary, Du Lede Minister of Personnel, Wang Hongzuo Minister of Revenue, and Gong Dingzi Minister of Punishments.

On the first day of the twelfth month, wuwu, there was a solar eclipse. On the bingxu day the seasonal brought-in sacrifice was performed at the Imperial Ancestral Temple. That month a comet was seen in the Zhang, Jing, Wei, and Kui mansions and Venus appeared; Supervising Secretary Yang Yongjian memorialized asking the court to repent and reform.

That year assessed taxes were remitted in varying degrees for one hundred twenty-one disaster-stricken prefectures and counties in Zhili, Jiangnan, Jiangxi, Shandong, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, Huguang, Guizhou, and other provinces. Korea sent tribute.

In Kangxi year four, on the renchen day of the first month of spring, Hao Weine was appointed Censor-in-Chief of the Left. On the jihai day rewards for customs posts that exceeded their quotas were suspended. On the xinchou day Prince Chenze Suose's son Bo'onggo was enfeoffed as Prince of Hui. Retired Grand Secretary Hong Chengchou died and was granted state funeral rites with the posthumous title Wenxiang.

On the yichou day of the second month, the Grand Empress Dowager's birthday, the court congratulatory audience was waived. On the jisi day Wu Sangui reported the pacification of the Shuixi and Wusa chieftains and the capture of An Kun and An Zhongsheng. On the bingxu day, because of celestial omens, an edict ordered officials to report governmental failings. Censor Dong Wenji memorialized that the regents had changed the late emperor's institutions, which was improper, and that everything should be restored.

On the wuzi day of the third month the capital was shaken by an earthquake that could be heard. On the xinmao day Venus was visible in daylight. Because of the omens and the earthquake a general amnesty was proclaimed and tax arrears were remitted. Shanxi suffered drought and the local officials failed to report it; the case was sent to the Ministry of Personnel for punishment, and accumulated arrears and that year's assessed levies were remitted. On the renchen day an edict forbade prefectures and counties to collect the next year's tax grain in advance. On the bingshen day an edict said: "When prefectures and counties suffer disaster and famine, officials request tax relief, but the common people have already paid in full — so the grace never reaches them. Henceforth, in stricken areas thirty percent of the assessed levy shall be collected on a deferred schedule before the due date." On the jiachen day, the emperor's birthday, the congratulatory audience was waived. On the bingwu day the Temple of Emperors of Past Dynasties was repaired. Vice Minister Qian Shou of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices asked that several elderly, learned men versed in the classics and histories be chosen to attend the emperor and serve as advisers.

In the fourth month of summer, on the bingyin day, an edict declared that wherever disaster taxes were remitted, corvée and miscellaneous levies were remitted as well. On the wuchen day an edict restored court nomination for vacancies among ministers, vice-ministers, governors-general, and governors.

On the dingwei day of the fifth month the Zhili governor-general was established, with jurisdiction over Shandong and Henan as well. The Guizhou governor-general was abolished and placed under Yunnan; Guangxi under Guangdong; Jiangxi under Jiangnan; Shanxi under Shaanxi; and the Fengyang, Ningxia, and Nangan governorships were all abolished.

On the yichou day of the sixth month an edict granted one year's exemption to households in which father and sons or brothers served corvée together.

In the seventh month of autumn, on the jiyou day, the Ministry of Personnel asked that Shanxi officials be commended because grain levies there had been collected in full. An edict said: "Not long ago, when Taiyuan and other districts suffered drought and famine, the governor-general and governor failed to report it and were sentenced. They were cleared by the general amnesty. How can they still be rated foremost for tax collection? Only officials in districts that were not stricken may still receive commendation." The passage continues.

On the gengwu day of the eighth month an edict declared that corrupt officials pardoned by amnesty might not return to office.

In the ninth month, on the xinmao day, the Lady Hesheri was invested as empress; she was the granddaughter of regent Sonin. Honorific titles were bestowed on the Grand Empress Dowager and the Empress Dowager, and favors were extended throughout the court and realm.

In the tenth month of winter, on the guihai day, the emperor went to the Southern Park for archery and the hunting encirclement. On the jiaxu day he returned to the palace.

On the dingsi day, because the mid-month qi of the twelfth month did not match, an edict called for men skilled in the Ming calendar. On the yichou day an edict declared that henceforth Han Army officials who entered mourning for a parent might leave office and observe the three-year mourning period.

On the first day of the sixth month, gengxu, there was a solar eclipse. On the guiyou day Fu Weilin was dismissed because of illness and Hao Weine was appointed Minister of Works. On the xinwei day an edict relaxed the tax on all goods leaving the capital through Chongwen Gate.

On the first day of the seventh month of autumn, gengchen, Zhu Zhibi was appointed Censor-in-Chief of the Left. On the xinsi day Ryukyu sent tribute and also made good tribute lost in earlier shipwrecks. The emperor commended their respectful obedience, ordered the goods returned, and ruled that henceforth only products of their own country might be offered as tribute.

In the eighth month, on the jiyou day, Supervising Secretary Zhang Weichi memorialized asking the emperor to assume personal rule.

On the dinghai day of the ninth month the emperor held the hunting encirclement in the Southern Park. On the guimao day he returned to the palace. Minister of Rites Sha Cheng was dismissed. Liang Qingbiao was appointed Minister of Rites, Gong Dingzi Minister of War, Hao Weine Minister of Punishments, and Zhu Zhibi Minister of Works.

In the tenth month of winter an edict reinstated Fan Chengmo as Academician of the Secretariat.

On the bingshen day of the eleventh month, regent Oboi, over the reallocation of banner estates, falsely charged Grand Secretary and acting Minister of Revenue Sunahe, Zhili Governor-General Zhu Changzuo, Governor Wang Denglian, and others; they were arrested and imprisoned. The four regents who assisted the government were all men of merit and long service. Sonin was old, Ebilun timid and weak, and Suksaha shortsighted; though they disapproved of Oboi's conduct they could not oppose him. Oboi was brutal and domineering; a veteran with many battle honors, though lowest in seniority among the regents, he acted arbitrarily, repeatedly opened major cases, and even his colleagues looked on in fear.

On the bingyin day of the twelfth month Oboi forged an imperial edict and put Sunahe, Zhu Changzuo, and Wang Denglian to death. On the jiaxu day the seasonal brought-in sacrifice was performed at the Imperial Ancestral Temple.

On the guihai day of the second month the late Prince Nikan's son, Beile Lanba, was promoted to commandery prince. On the dingmao day the imperial clansman Duke Banbuerchan was appointed Grand Secretary. Tulai was reinstated as Grand Secretary. The late Governor-General Li Shuaitai was posthumously granted the rank of first-class baron.

On the jihai day of the third month Miu Tong and one hundred fifty others were granted the jinshi degree and appointed to office with differentiated ranks.

In the fourth month of summer, on the jiaxu day, Sonin was raised to duke of the first class. On the jiazi day the Jiangnan commoner Shen Tianfu, who had written seditious poetry and falsely accused others, was executed. Those he had falsely accused were not punished. Censor Tian Liushan said that malicious informers, unable to charge southerners with "communicating with the sea" or northerners with "the Yuqi faction," would instead accuse them of "seditious writings" or "fugitive bondservants"; he asked that false accusers be tried and punished in turn. The request was approved.

On the xinyou day of the fifth month Wu Sangui memorialized asking to be relieved of overall responsibility for Yunnan and Guizhou. The court approved the request.

In the sixth month, on jihai, the court forbade procurement agents collecting nanmu from oppressing the people.

In autumn, the seventh month, on jiyou, the Emperor assumed personal rule. At the Hall of Supreme Harmony he received congratulations, extended favors throughout the realm, and pardoned all crimes short of death. That same day he began to hold court and hear affairs at the Gate of Heavenly Purity. On jiayin, he ordered that military officials also be presented at audience. On jiwei, the regent Oboi put the regent Suksaha and his sons and kin to death on his own authority. On guihai, the regents Ebilun and Oboi were promoted to first-class duke.

In the ninth month, on bingwu, he ordered the compilation of the Veritable Records of Emperor Shizu.

In winter, the tenth month, on jimao, Mukden was struck by an earthquake that could be heard.

In the eleventh month, on dingwei, the winter solstice, the Emperor sacrificed to Heaven at the Circular Mound. Emperor Zhang of Shizu was joined in the offering. On dingsi, honorific titles were conferred upon the Grand Empress Dowager and the Empress Dowager.

In the twelfth month, on bingxu, Sebeli was appointed naval commander of Guangdong. On wuzi, Ma'ersai was appointed an additional Minister of Revenue. On wuxu, a joint seasonal sacrifice was held at the Imperial Ancestral Temple.

In autumn, the seventh month, on wuwu, the former grain transport governor-general Wu Weihua proposed levying building-space taxes on market towns and charging commoners for the right to farm sandbank fields. The Emperor, loathing such schemes for profit, sent the case to the Ministry of Justice for punishment. On gengshen, Kuadai was appointed Manchu commander-in-chief.

In the eighth month, on renshen, Wang Hongzuo, Minister of Revenue, was dismissed for not detecting clerks who forged seals and stole from the treasury.

In the ninth month, on gengzi, Wu Mahu was made general of Fengtian, Etuh general of Jiangning, and Warka general of Xi'an. On renyin, as the Emperor prepared to tour the frontier, Reader-in-waiting Xiong Cili and supervising secretary Zhao Zhifu submitted memorials of remonstrance. The Emperor had long known of Oboi's tyranny and misrule and feared his personal strength; he therefore trained young, powerful guards in the art of wrestling. That day, as Oboi came in for audience, the Emperor had his guards seize and bind him on the spot. Thereupon the Skilled Wrestlers' Guard was established under close ministers. On gengshen, the princes and ministers submitted Oboi's case, setting forth thirty grave crimes and asking that his whole clan be put to death. The edict declared that Oboi was stupid and lawless and that by rights his clan should be destroyed. Yet in view of his many years of service and repeated battlefield merit, his life is spared; his property is confiscated and he is held in confinement. His younger brothers Murima and Seibende, his nephew Nemo, his partisan Grand Secretary Banbursan, Ministers Ashan, Gatuha, and Jishi, Vice Minister Taibitu, and Academician Ggese were all put to death. When he reached Lizhou his army wavered, advancing one day and pulling back the next. Now, as he was at table, he heard the news and cried out in alarm, "The emperor is still a youth— and he can act like this? The matter is settled!" He pushed away his food and stood up. An edict removed Sun Yanling from office. Amitai was appointed Pacification Commissioner and posted at Jiangning, while Laita was named Southern Pacification General and sent to Hangzhou. On jiayin day Liu Jinzhong, commander of Chaozhou, turned the city over to the rebels. On wuwu day Gent was made Bandit-Suppression General and dispatched to Guangxi against Sun Yanling. Shang Kexi was old and gravely ill and unable to take the field; though he sent repeated urgent appeals, reinforcements did not arrive in time. By then the rebels had pressed Guangzhou, and Shang Zhixin forced his father to submit to them. Governor-General Jin Guangzu and the grand coordinators Tong Yangju and Chen Hongming, together with Regional Commander Yan Ziming, all surrendered as well. Yang Xi, grand coordinator of Fujian, and Regional Commander Baiyinda fought their way out through the gates and escaped. Shushu and Mangyitu fell back into Jiangxi. When word of the Guangdong revolt reached the court, the Emperor ordered additional forces transferred to Jiangxi.

Where families cannot return home or wives and children go without support, the hardship is deeply pitiable. Let frontier officials everywhere ascertain the facts and provide for their safe return and upkeep, so that our intent to honor the loyal may be made plain." On the jiachen day the Armillary Halo Star appeared and auspicious clouds were seen. On the yisi day Wu Sangui gathered his forces to defend Changsha. Le'erjin was ordered to advance on Linjiang, Tu Hai to hold Hanzhong, Labu to garrison Ji'an, Mangyitu to push toward Shaozhou, Echu to station at Yuanzhou, and Shushu to defend Ganzhou.

When hostilities began he submitted a strategic plan, and hence received this appointment. Or that tax remissions and relief grants are not carried out in fact? Or that magistrates in hearing cases wrong innocent commoners? Or that princes and great ministers fail to restrain their subordinates and allow harm to common people? If any one of these is true, it is enough to bring disaster. Only by holding to the great law in small matters, by governing in peace and settling suits justly, may we perhaps move Heaven and dispel this evil sign. Therefore I make known my heart, wishing to exhort myself together with officials great and small, within the court and without. Thus concluded the address.

The native officials Long Tianyou and Sha Qilong built a pontoon bridge on the Pan River to carry the main army across. On the renyin day Gao Meng recovered Guang'an prefecture. On the gengxu day Hao Yu was appointed governor of Guangxi. On the guichou day the combined seasonal sacrifice was performed at the Imperial Ancestral Temple.

On the guiyou day Regional Commander Gao Meng recovered Dazhou. On the jiaxu day General Garhan recovered Yunyang; Tan Hong died; the army went on to recover Zhong prefecture, Wan county, and Kai county. On the yihai day a vice minister surnamed Wen was ordered to supervise repairs on the Tongzhou canal. On the bingzi day General Muzhan and Grand Coordinator Zhao Lai attacked Xia Guoxiang and his fellows, drove them off, and recovered Pingyuan. On the xinsi day additional lecture officials were appointed. An edict instructed the judiciary to exercise caution in imposing punishments. That month Zheng Jing died and his son Keshuang succeeded to leadership of his forces.

On the jichou day of the second month Beile Zhangtai's army reached Annan Guard and attacked the rebel general Xian Xu at Jiangxi Slope. The rebels drew up an elephant formation to block the advance. Government troops split into three columns and attacked with force, breaking them completely. The rebels fled; Gongtu and Daha'ertai pursued, defeated them again, and recovered Pu'an prefecture and Xinxing post. On the renchen day Vice Commander-in-Chief Mangyilu defeated the rebels Zhang Fufa and others at Sanshan. On the jiawu day an edict declared that every levy and abuse left over from the Three Feudatories that had harmed the people was to be abolished. Salt certificates for Fengtian were remitted. Grand General Laita's army reached Guangxi, routed the rebels at Huangcao Dam, recovered Anlong, and entered Qujing. Gao Meng recovered Dongxiang and defeated Peng Shiheng at Yuecheng Stockade. On the wuxu day one additional Manchu deputy director was added to the Directorate of Astronomy. Banner Commander-in-Chief Xifu, Ma Ji, and Shuota recovered Malong Prefecture and Yanglin City, advanced into Songming Prefecture, and the rebels fled. Muzhan recovered Qianxi and Dading and beheaded the rebel general Zhang Weijian. On the yisi day Prince Zhangtai, Grand General Laita, and General Cai Yurong entered Yunnan in succession. Rebel generals Hu Guobing and Liu Qilong came out to resist; government troops attacked in separate columns, defeated them, and beheaded Guobing and Qilong. On the xinhai day the emperor visited the Xiaoling Mausoleum.

On the xiyou day Empresses Renxiao and Xiaozhao were interred at the Changrui Mountain mausoleum. An edict ordered memorials reviewed at the traveling palace and directed the grand secretaries to examine them. On the renxu day Hu Guozhu attacked Jianchang; General Foenile routed him and recovered Mahu. On the guihai day Ma Bao abandoned Zunyi and raided Luzhou and Xuzhou. An edict ordered Foenile and Zhao Liangdong to press the Yunnan rebels urgently and not allow them to return and reinforce. On the bingyin day posthumous honors and hereditary appointments were granted to Transport Commissioner Gao Tianjue of Fujian, Prefect Zhang Ruwu, and others who died in service. On the wuchen day the native official Lu Daoqing surrendered Yongning. On the guiyou day the emperor escorted the Grand Empress Dowager to the hot springs at Zunhua.

On the jiyou day Prince Zhangtai sent envoys to pacify the routes; Wuding, Dali, Lin'an, Yongshun, and Yao'an all submitted. On the renzi day the emperor escorted the Grand Empress Dowager back to the palace.

On the first day, guichou, of the fifth month, Regional Commander Zhou Bushi took Zunyi, accepted the surrender of the rebel officials Jin Shijun and others, and recovered Zhen'an Prefecture and the counties Renhuai, Tongzi, Suiyang, and others. On the jiwei day officials were dispatched to inspect drought damage among the Sonit and other Mongol banners. On the yichou day an edict declared that officials from districts once occupied by rebels should not be selected for censorial posts. On the xinsi day Grand General Prince Zhangtai reported reaching the Yunnan provincial capital; the rebel general Li Famei surrendered Heqing and Lijiang prefectures.

On the xinyou day Banner Commander-in-Chief Xifu and Regional Commander Sang E attacked Ma Bao at Wumu Mountain and routed him utterly. Ma Bao surrendered, was sent to the capital in the cangue, and was executed. On the yichou day Zhao Liangdong sent Brigade Commander Li Fangshu to defeat Hu Guozhu, recover Jianchang, and enter Yunnan. On the wuchen day an edict ordered Tu Hai to return to the capital with Wang Fuchen. On the renshen day a banquet was given at Yingtai; all officials from assistant department director upward attended, and colored silks were granted. On the jimao day Shi Lang was appointed Fujian naval commander-in-chief to plan the recovery of Taiwan; Wan Zhengse was transferred to land-route regional commander.

The funeral procession of the late Pacification-of-the-South King Shang Kexi reached Tongzhou; eight thousand taels of silver were granted and officials were sent to offer tea and fruit. On the wuwu day the emperor stopped at Xiong County, summoned Prefect Wu Jian, and inquired about the Hun River's breach and the plight of afflicted residents. On the bingyin day the emperor returned to the capital. An edict halted this year's autumn executions. On the renshen day transport-corvée labor silver was restored.

In winter, on the guiwei day of the tenth month, Huguang-west governor Han Shiqiao defeated the rebel general Huang Ming at Guzhou. On the jiashen day the Eleuth leader Galdan came to offer tribute. On the yiyou day Grand Secretary Tu Hai's army returned; the emperor praised and rewarded him. On the renchen day an edict ordered the withdrawal of banner soldiers of the Pacification-of-the-South and Pacification-of-the-Southwest principalities back to the capital. On the guimao day an edict exempted Turfan from presenting dogs and horses as tribute.

On the xinhai day of the eleventh month an edict declared that among those who had followed the rebels, except for those who had conspicuously resisted the imperial armies, all were to be stripped of office and released. Nuomai was appointed banner commander-in-chief of the Chinese Banners. Grand General for Pacifying Distant Rebels Prince Zhangtai, Pacification-of-the-South Grand General and Banner Commander-in-Chief Laita, Valiant-strategy General and Governor Zhao Liangdong, and Pacification-of-the-Distance General and Governor Cai Yurong memorialized that on the twenty-eighth day of the tenth month imperial forces entered Yunnan City; Wu Shifan killed himself and his head was forwarded; Wu Sangui's remains were dismembered and displayed to the realm; the rebel chancellor Fang Guangchen was executed; the remaining adherents submitted; and Yunnan was pacified. That day the victory was reported at the Xiaoling Mausoleum; the imperial carriage was at Jizhou. On the dingmao day sacrifice was offered at the Xiaoling. On the xinwei day Prince Zhangtai and General Zhao Liangdong were recalled to the capital. On the yihai day the emperor hunted at the Southern Hills and with one arrow killed three tigers. On the jimao day the emperor returned to the capital.

On the wuzi day of the twelfth month a Manchu general was stationed at Jingzhou and a Chinese Banner general at Hanzhong. On the guisi day the officials petitioned that an honorific title be conferred on the emperor. The imperial rescript said: "Since rebel chieftains raised insurrection and worthless men answered their call, armies have been exhausted by levies and common lanes worn out by transport. Floods and droughts have come in succession, and portents have piled one upon another. All this stems from my own want of virtue. Yet by the numen of the altars of state the lesser rebels have been cut down and pacified. Just when we should advance the worthy and give the people rest, to gratify ourselves with meaningless embellishment — can we not feel shame? Let the proposal not be carried out." The supplementary Guangxi provincial examination was held. On the wuxu day Grand Secretary Tu Hai died. On the jihai day the emperor received congratulations at the Gate of Supreme Harmony and proclaimed victory within and abroad. On the guimao day honorific titles were added for the Grand Empress Dowager and Empress Dowager; a grace edict was issued, grants given to the imperial clan, gifts to outer domains, ranks and favors bestowed, examination quotas expanded, hidden worthies recommended, chastity and filial piety honored, orphans and the destitute succored, and all crimes not normally within an amnesty were pardoned. Yu Chenglong was appointed governor-general of Jiangnan and Jiangxi, and Wu Xingzuo of Guangdong and Guangxi. On the dingwei day the collective ancestral temple rites were performed.

That year disaster remissions of land tax were granted, in varying amounts, to seventy-five districts in Zhili, Jiangnan, Jiangxi, Shandong, Shanxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, and other provinces. Registered ding households totaled 17,230,000; land-tax receipts came to 22,183,760 taels and odd cash. Salt and tea levies produced 2,399,468 taels. Cash coined totaled 231,390,000 wen. Korea and the Eleuths presented tribute.
