On xinyou, Yao Chenglie died; Peng Yuanrui took the rites ministry. On bingyin, Pufu became Tibet resident commissioner. On gengwu, He Yucheng blamed Jiang-Chu grain trafficking for rising Jiangxi prices. Hongli, intent on curbing hoarding, rebuked him sharply. Fan Jianzhong was sent to Hami.

In month 2, gengchen, Hongli lectured, feasted, and made annual the singing of new admonitory verses. Huang Shijian was made Grand Guardian of the Heir Apparent. On yiyou, Hongli hunted at the Southern Park. On xinmao, Cao Wenpei, Jiang Sheng, and Yiling'a were sent to audit Zhejiang granaries. On renchen, Hongli worshipped at the Western Tombs, toured Wutai, and forgave a tenth of route taxes. On bingshen, Hongli worshipped at Tailing and Tai East Tombs. On dingyou, Shunde, Guangping, and Daming lost last year's disaster arrears. On jihai, Tusaibu took Hubei. On guimao, six Shanxi districts including Xinzhou lost tax arrears.

In month 4, jimao, Agui was sent to Jiangnan for river works. On yiyou, Dou Guangnong reported 100,000-tael deficits in three Zhejiang counties and silver collection for granary purchases. Cao Wenpei and others were ordered to investigate and report. Six Shanxi districts including Daizhou received flood relief. On jichou, Dou Guangnong joined Cao Wenpei in investigating Zhejiang deficits.

On dingsi, Sun Shiyi took Liang-Guang; Tusaibu, Guangdong; Li Feng, Hubei. On jiwei, Li Shiyao acted as Huguang governor-general. On xinwei, Hongli went to the Mulan autumn hunt. Dajianlu and other Sichuan earthquake districts received relief. That month, fifty-six Jiangsu districts including Shangyuan lost last year's drought taxes.

In month 7, wushen, twelve Henan districts including Shangqiu lost last year's drought taxes. On renzi, the Qinghe breached at Li Family Estate. On dingsi, Agui was sent from Zhejiang to Qingkou with Li Shijie to dam the breach. On jisi, Cao Xibao failed to prove charges against Heshen's servant Liu Quan and was dismissed yet kept in post.

On jichou, Dou Guangnong lost his posts as Zhejiang intendant and personnel vice minister. On gengyin, Fulehun was sentenced to death. On yiwei, Heshen joined the Wenhua Grand Secretariat and took charge of revenue. Fukang'an became personnel minister and associate grand secretary while staying at Shaanxi-Gansu. Fu Chang'an took revenue; Chuoketuo acted at war. On wuxu, Wuling and Longyang received flood relief.

Seventeen Anhui counties and five guards including Fengyang received flood relief.

On bingchen, Agui was sent to survey Jiangnan dikes at Gaoyan and elsewhere. On wuwu, twenty-three Jiangsu counties and five Huai'an guards lost this year's transport grain levies from flood, by degree. On xinyou, timid Heng Rui was recalled and E Hui became Fuzhou general. Seven Zhili drought counties including Bao'an were relieved. On renxu, Jiangsu and Zhejiang each sent fifty thousand strings for Fujian supplies.

On the eleventh-month new moon, Li Shiyao and Sun Shiyi became grand guardians and Chai Daji junior guardian. Taiwan's Guangdong and Quanzhou loyalist villages received imperial plaques. On renshen, Chai Daji became a hereditary first-class Baron of Righteous Courage for holding Chiayi. Chiayi in Taiwan lost its year-54 quota taxes. Bayansan was rebuked for calling the Dalai Lama's envoys "barbarian envoys." On yiyou, greedy Kui Lin was arrested and Baoning became Yili general. Li Shijie took Sichuan; Shu Lin, Liangjiang; Chen Yongfu, Anhui.

In month 12, dingwei, Fukang'an broke rebels at Lunzaiding, relieved Chiayi, and he and Hai Lancha became dukes with ruby finials and four-dragon robes. On jiyou, Chang Qing became Fuzhou general. Shu Chang took Huguang and Fu Chang'an took works. After Fukang'an attacked Chai Daji and Cai Panlong for inflated merit, Hongli ruled: "Chai Daji held firm and defended to the limit. Cai Panlong fought hard, killed rebels, and reached the county seat. Perhaps they offended Fukang'an in etiquette and he turned against them. How can merit be denied and baseless charges piled on?" Sun Shiyi was granted double peacock feathers for moving troops and supplies across boundaries. On wuwu, Decheng's charge of Chai Daji's greed sent Fukang'an and Li Shiyao to impeach on facts and Yade was arrested for Fujian cover-up. On gengshen, Wulana acted as Fujian governor. Yongduo became Mukden general and Shang'an, Urumqi governor.

In year 53, month 1, dingmao, twenty Fujian troop-route counties including Jinjiang lost this year's taxes, by degree. On xinwei, Ming Xing reported the river clear at Shanxi Yongning and elsewhere. On bingxu, Chai Daji was stripped and arrested. Chang Qing lost Fuzhou for covering Chai Daji.

Agui, Wang Jie, Fu Chang'an, and Dong Gao received merit registers. Sun Shiyi received a hereditary chariot commandancy. On yiwei, Huang Shijian and Ren Chengen were freed. On renyin, Hailu lost Yili for false charges against Kui Lin and both served as bondsmen. On yisi, Youzi's line received a Five Classics erudite. On xinhai, Hongli toured Tianjin. On gengshen, Zhuang Datian was taken and Xu Shiheng and other officers were rewarded. On xinyou, Tianjin tax arrears were forgiven. On renxu, Hongli reviewed troops at the Review Pavilion.

In month 3, wuchen, Mu Jing'a was sent to Hubei with Shu Chang to investigate. On renshen, Lin Shuangwen was executed. On guiwei, Fukang'an and Hai Lancha again received purple reins, coral beads, and Fukang'an a golden yellow belt.

On gengxu, eighteen Jiangsu counties and five Huai'an guards lost last year's flood taxes, by degree. On jiwei, Fulehun and Yade were condemned to strangulation for lax oversight of Chai Daji.

On dingwei, three Shaanxi counties including Huazhou lost year-51 flood taxes. On wushen, Nguyễn Huệ expelled King Lê Duy Kỳ, who fled to seek aid. Sun Shiyi was sent to Guangxi to reassure them. Nine Shanxi drought counties including Datong lost last year's taxes.

On the seventh-month new moon, Nguyễn Huy Tú brought Lê Duy Kỳ's kin and Sun Shiyi was told to care for them. On renxu, Jiaozhou and Shouguang in Shandong received flood relief. Jingzhou's Yangtze flood drowned both cities and Shu Chang was told to survey and relieve. On dingchou, Li Shiyao regained his earldom and heir Li Fengyao received regional commander rank. On wuyin, the Yangtze flooded Wuchang and Hanyang. Bi Yuan took Huguang; Wulana, Henan; Ming Xing, Ushi. Huaining and other Anhui flood districts were relieved. Chai Daji was executed. Jiang Sheng was recalled and Huiling became Hubei governor. On wuzi, Gurkhas took Gyirong and Nyalam and Chengde and Mukedeng'a were sent to fight them.

On guichou, Gurkhas retook Dzongkha and E Hui became general with Chengde as campaign staff. On bingchen, Nguyễn Huệ fled; Sun Shiyi directed Xu Shiheng's advance and Fugang garrisoned Mengzi. On wuwu, Hongli returned to the Summer Resort.

In month 10, gengyin, Gurkhas invaded Sakya in rear Tibet. Sun Shiyi was sent beyond the passes to command suppression. On jiawu, Qianjiang in Hubei received flood relief. On bingshen, thirty-six Hubei districts including Jiangxia received flood relief. On jihai, Sun Shiyi was told to choose a Lê heir for Beijing tribute because Lê Duy Kỳ was feeble. On gengzi, Wuda Jing marched out with a summons for Nguyễn Huệ to surrender. On guimao, Shu Lian took Tibet and Heng Rui, Ili. Dorjia became Mukden general and Hengxiu, Jilin general. Songchun became Xi'an general and Xingzhao replaced him. Linning became Heilongjiang general. On yimao, ill Li Shiyao left Fukang'an acting as Fujian-Zhejiang governor-general.

Lebao took Shaanxi-Gansu and Haining, Shanxi. On bingzi, Hubei dikes at Jiangling and Gong'an were repaired. Thirty-six Hubei districts including Jiangling lost this year's flood taxes, by degree.

In month 12, jichou, Fulehun and Yade were freed. Sun Shiyi reported victory on the Shouchang River. On guisi, rebels were beaten again at Shiqiu River. On bingshen, Licheng was taken, Lê Duy Kỳ restored as Annam king, Sun Shiyi made a first-class duke, and Xu Shiheng a first-class baron. On wushen, Sun Shiyi was ordered to withdraw.

In year 54 spring, jiwei New Year, rites disorder cost censors their posts, Debao his insignia, and Censorate and Honglu chiefs a severe board hearing. On gengshen, Cheng De reported recovery of Dzongkha, Gyirong, and Nyalam. On guiyou, Debao died and Chang Qing took rites. On jiaxu, repentant Burma was told to keep peace and Siam's Zheng Hua was bribed to end feuds. Six Fujian districts including Danshui lost disaster tax arrears. On guiwei, Nguyễn Huệ retook Licheng and Xu Shiheng and other Guangxi commanders fell. Sun Shiyi was called to Beijing and lost his dukedom. Fukang'an became Liangguang governor-general. Wulana took Fujian-Zhejiang and Liang Kentang, Henan. Hailu became Guangxi commander. On jiashen, Lê Duy Kỳ fled again and was settled in Guangxi. On bingxu, Sun Shiyi lost office but kept governor rank at Zhennan Pass.

In month 2 gengyin, Agui and others were reviewed, Xie Yong censured, Fulu retired, and Fukang'an reviewed. On dingyou, Lebao had audience and Bayansan acted at Shaanxi-Gansu. Khotan officer Gebeng'e was executed for proven extortion. On jiayin, Landisi took Jiangnan canals and Li Fenggan, Hedong. On yimao, Fukang'an was told Annam was too feverish and poor for war.

On yichou, absent tutor Liu Yong was demoted to vice-minister. Peng Yuanrui took personnel and Sun Shiyi, war. On dingmao, Hongli went to Mount Pan.

In month 4 wuzi, Fengtian Guangning and Fenghuang lost last year's flood taxes and relief continued, by degree. On bingshen, Xu Shiheng was made a posthumous baron for Chengmou to inherit. Sun Shiyi was recalled to Beijing. On gengzi, Heng Rui took Uliasutai and Fukang'an acted at war. Fukang'an was told to settle Annam's Lê clansmen and old ministers. Campaign veteran Pan Qide of Lang Son was made a regional commander. On renyin, Agui re-inspected Jingzhou dikes. On dingwei, Hongli proclaimed Annam too foul to fight again. If Nguyễn Huệ truly came to court, he might receive a measured title. Hongli claimed he cherished life and never exhausted the state in war. On xinhai, ninety-eight graduates including Hu Changling received jinshi rank by degree. Dorjia took Heilongjiang, Songchun Mukden, Hengxiu Suiyuan, and Linning Jilin. On guichou, Nguyễn Quang Hiển's tribute was refused because Nguyễn Huệ would not come himself. On bingchen, four Zhili drought counties including Xuanhua lost last year's taxes.

On intercalary month 5 gengyin, Hongli hunted at Mulan. On xinmao, seven Fengtian districts including Guangning lost last year's flood taxes. On jiawu, five Yunnan districts including Tonghai received earthquake relief.

In month 6, seven Anhui districts including Anqing lost year-53 flood taxes. On jiazi, Guan Ganzhen became canal transport governor-general. On wuchen, Zhili's Li County received flood relief. On gengwu, Sun Shiyi joined Grand Council walking attendance. On renshen, Guo Shixun became Guangdong governor. On guiyou, Chen Buyuan became Guizhou governor. On bingzi, Fukang'an said Nguyễn Huệ was Nguyễn Quang Bình, pardoned and allowed to surrender and attend next year's birthday rites. Earnest pleading won him the Annam kingship and an imperial patent. Twenty-four Hubei districts including Jiangxia lost last year's flood taxes.

On the seventh-month new moon, Suzhou flood victims were told to be relieved after the breach. On dingyou, eight Zhili districts including Anzhou received flood relief. On gengzi, Revenue Minister Chuoketuo died. On bingwu, Bayansan took revenue and Qin Chengen, Shaanxi. On wushen, Nguyễn Quang Hiển and other Annam envoys were received.

On dingyou, Hongli returned from progress. On bingwu, Lê Duy Kỳ herding horses at Baole was beaten by Nguyễn Quang Bình. Fukang'an was told to receive Lê Duy Kỳ if he fled. On xinhai, Ayang'a died and Shuchang took the left censorate.

In month 10 guichou, Wulitunasson left Chahar command and Baotai replaced him. Wuerwusun became Kobdo assistant commissioner. On yimao, Fotu became Uliasutai assistant commissioner. Jilin hunting stations including Daqsheng Wula received flood relief. On jiwei, the Suining breach closed. On xinyou, Hunan flood victims in Huarong and other counties were relieved.

In month 11 yiyou, enfeoffed Nguyễn Quang Bình's thanks tribute was accepted. On bingxu day, tax arrears were forgiven in fourteen Anhui districts including Suzhou. On gengyin day, Fukang'an brought Le Viet Ki to Beijing as a Han Banner company commander. On guisi day, Li Shijie was ill; Qingcheng brought doctors while Sun Shiyi and Peng Yuanrui filled in for him. On wuxu day, Shenyang-area granary loans were forgiven.

On gengshen in the twelfth month, Feng Quan and others lost their posthumous titles. On xinwei day, Hongli ordered an eighty-year longevity seal carved ahead of next year's birthday.

In spring of the fifty-fifth year, on the first-month new moon, graded amnesties were proclaimed for Hongli's eightieth birthday. All provinces received a general remission of land tax and grain. On jichou day, the amnesty edict went to Korea, Vietnam, Ryukyu, Siam, and others. On renchen day, Heshen received a yellow belt and ceremonial surcoat. King Nguyen Quang Binh of Vietnam received a golden yellow belt. On yisi day, King Yi San of Korea sent birthday congratulations and tribute. On jiyou day, King Shang Mu of Ryukyu sent thanks and tribute.

On the second-month new moon, Henan wall errors cost Bi Yuan and others their titles while they remained on duty. On guichou day, Zhili flood taxes for the fifty-fourth year were forgiven at Yongqing and Wuqing. On jiwei day, Hongli toured the tombs and Shandong, cutting transit taxes in Zhili by three-tenths. On renxu day, the Emperor visited the Zhaoxi, Xiao, and Xiao East Tombs. On gengwu day, the Emperor visited the Tai and Tai East Tombs. On xinwei day, Zhili disaster-deferred taxes accumulated over years were forgiven. On renshen day, Fukang'an escorted Nguyen Quang Binh to court while Guo Shixun acting headed Liangguang. On yihai day, Yunnan earthquake taxes for the fifty-fourth year were forgiven, including fields swallowed by the sea. Transit districts in Shandong received a three-tenths tax cut. Liu E was demoted; Liang Kentang took Zhili and Mu Helan, Henan. On wuyin day, Shandong disaster-deferred silver payments were forgiven. Fu Song became Anhui governor.

In the third month, the Emperor climbed Mount Tai. On jiawu day, the Emperor visited the tomb of Shaohao. At Qufu he visited the temple of the Master. In the third winter the retired Emperor fell ill. In the fourth year, on renxu day, he died at eighty-nine. That year the full posthumous title and temple name Gaozong were conferred. In the ninth month, he was buried at Yuling.

The annalists say Gaozong ruled at supreme fortune, expanding the realm and balancing wen and wu as never before. His reign equaled Kangxi's, but his years exceeded them. Nothing like it had occurred since the Three Dynasties. Only in old age, blinded by powerful favorites, did he cloud his glory—and at that one sighs.
