On the seventh-month new moon, Nguyễn Huy Tú brought Lê Duy Kỳ's kin and Sun Shiyi was told to care for them. On renxu, Jiaozhou and Shouguang in Shandong received flood relief. Jingzhou's Yangtze flood drowned both cities and Shu Chang was told to survey and relieve. On dingchou, Li Shiyao regained his earldom and heir Li Fengyao received regional commander rank. Lebao took Shaanxi-Gansu and Haining, Shanxi. On bingzi, Hubei dikes at Jiangling and Gong'an were repaired. Thirty-six Hubei districts including Jiangling lost this year's flood taxes, by degree.

On xinhai, Ayang'a died and Shuchang took the left censorate.

On guisi day, Li Shijie was ill; Qingcheng brought doctors while Sun Shiyi and Peng Yuanrui filled in for him. On wuxu day, Shenyang-area granary loans were forgiven.

On bingzi day, Baa Zhong was charged for private Gurkha talks and promised tribute silver. On jiawu day, Su Ling'a became Minister of Punishments.

On wushen day, the Emperor prayed for rain at Guangrun Shrine. Rain fell that night. On dingwei day, Guizhou transit districts received partial land-tax remissions. Fukang'an reported taking Huangguazhai. On jiyou day, Su Ling'a again acted at Liangjiang and Fei Chun took Anhui while Hunan affairs continued. On gengxu day, Longxi and three other Fujian counties were forgiven last year's flood taxes. Chen Zhouquan and other rebel leaders were executed.

Fukang'an reported captures at Goupi, Supi, and elsewhere. Fukang'an became Fujian-Zhejiang governor-general and Lebao Sichuan governor. Yi Mian became Shaanxi-Gansu governor-general. On renxu day, the Emperor stayed at the Summer Resort. On jiazi day, censors were rebuked over Fujian warehouse deficits and told to report major local affairs. Ajing'a was summoned to Beijing and Jing'an became Henan governor. On dingmao day, Hui Ling was recalled and Wang Xin took Anhui. On wuchen day, Su Ling'a was stationed at Qingjiangpu acting as Jiangsu governor. On xinwei day, Yu Minzhong lost his hereditary commandant title for corruption.

On wuzi day, drought led to prison reviews and commutations below exile in Beijing and Rehe. On gengyin day, Fukang'an reported taking Shadou, Duoxi, and other stockades. On yiwei day, Nanhai and other Guangdong counties received flood relief. On wushen day, Yao Fen was suspended, Kui Lun acted as Fujian governor, and Changlin as Fujian-Zhejiang governor-general.

On bingyin day, Fukang'an was rewarded for successive stockade captures and crossing the Great Wucao River. On renshen day, the Jebtsundamba Khutuktu and others were received and given tea.

On gengshen day, the Heir Apparent was sent to the Eastern and Western Tombs. On yichou day, Shuliang was prosecuted for extortion and Yongkun replaced him at Heilongjiang. Tusang'a became Uliastai general. Hengrui became Xi'an general and Wuer'tunaxun replaced him. Boxing became Chahar commander-in-chief. Tekesen took Urga and Cebake Xining. On bingyin day, Mingliang lost his post for sable embezzlement and Baoning became Ili general. On jisi day, Shuliang was sentenced to strangulation. Mingliang remained to serve at Urumchi. On guiyou day, six provinces with no arrears received twenty percent off next year's main tax. On yihai day, six Fujian counties and two districts were forgiven last year's flood taxes.

At Jiaqing 1 New Year the abdication ceremony installed the Heir Apparent as emperor. The retired Emperor still decided weighty affairs while routine matters were reported to him. Palace calendars still read Qianlong.

In the third winter the retired Emperor fell ill. In the fourth year, on renxu day, he died at eighty-nine. That year the full posthumous title and temple name Gaozong were conferred. In the ninth month, he was buried at Yuling.

論曰：高宗運際郅隆，勵精圖治，開疆拓宇，四征不庭，揆文奮武，於斯為盛。 享祚之久，同符圣祖，而壽考則逾之。 自三代以後，未嘗有也。 惟耄期倦勤，蔽於權倖，上累日月之明，為之嘆息焉。
The annalists say Gaozong ruled at supreme fortune, expanding the realm and balancing wen and wu as never before. His reign equaled Kangxi's, but his years exceeded them. Nothing like it had occurred since the Three Dynasties. Only in old age, blinded by powerful favorites, did he cloud his glory—and at that one sighs.
