In Daoguang 21, month 1, jichou, the British struck Humen in Guangdong; Chen Lianbi and his son Ju Peng were killed. On gengyin day, Yishan became an imperial presence grand minister. On xinmao day, after Humen fell Qishan faced severe board review and Guan Tianpei lost his peacock feather. Yishan was made Pacification General with Long Wen and Yang Fang as commissioners for Guangdong coastal defense. Saishang'a joined the Grand Council. On gengzi day, Ne'erjing'e was posted at Tianjin to supervise coastal defense. Hala'a was sent to Shanhaiguan to supervise coastal defense. Qiying and others were told to keep scouts active. On jisi day, Yilibu went back to Liang-Jiang and Yuqian became Imperial Commissioner for Zhejiang. On xinhai day, Qishan lost grand secretary rank and again faced severe board review. That month, Fengtian's Baiqibao banner households received flood rations. Jiangdu and Dantu, Xiaoheishan stationers, Miaowan saltern workers, and Dongliu and Fanchang received disaster grain. Flood seed loans went to Mianyang and seven other Hubei units, Wuling, five Gansu districts, Shangyuan and ten other Jiangsu counties, and Gaolan; Hequ received hail granary grain.

In month 2, gengshen, Yilibu was sent for severe review for delaying his advance. On xinyou day, Qishan was arrested and his property was confiscated again. Qi took Liang-Guang with Yiliang acting; Li Zhenfu acted at Punishments; Ne'erjing'e took Zhili; Enteheng'e took Shaanxi-Gansu. On bingyin day, Vietnam's King Ruan Fuciao died and tribute was suspended. On wuchen day, with the British gone from Dinghai, Yilibu lost associate grand secretary rank for cowardice but kept Liang-Jiang. Baoxing became grand secretary and stayed at Sichuan. Yijing became associate grand secretary. On wuyin day, Qi Shen was sent to Guangdong as staff commissioner for joint suppression. On renwu day, the British took Humen batteries and Wuyong; Guan Tianpei, Xiang Fu, and others were killed. That month, Jiangning and Tongzhou received extended disaster relief.

In month 3, bingxu new moon, Zhou Tianjue was freed to go to the Guangdong camp. On jiawu day, the Emperor visited the Western Tombs and cut route taxes by thirty percent. On yiwei day, retired Grand Secretary Wen Fu died. On bingshen day, British ships entered Guangdong's inner harbor and Yang Fang drove them off. On wuxu day, the Emperor visited Tailing, Taidongling, and Changling and offered at Longquan Valley to Empresses Xiaomu, Xiaoshen, and Xiaoquan. On jihai day, the Emperor again visited Changling and performed the earth-spreading rite. At Long'en Hall he held the great feast rite. On renyin day, the Emperor returned to Beijing. On bingwu day, the Emperor mourned at Wen Fu's house. On wushen day, America and other countries were allowed to trade. On gengxu day, Yuqian's memorial reopened coastal treaty ports to merchant trade. On renzi day, Yang Fang and others asked to keep British trade at Guangdong. The court refused and sent Yang Fang and Yiliang for severe review.

At intercalary month 3, yimao new moon, Yang Fang and Yiliang lost rank but stayed on. On bingyin day, Tang Jinzhao was demoted; Zhuo Bingtian took Personnel and became associate grand secretary; Qi Junzao took Revenue; Xu Naipu took War. On dingmao day, Yilibu was called to Beijing; Yuqian took Liang-Jiang; Liu Yunke took Dinghai defense. Liang Zhangju took Jiangsu and Zhou Zhiqi took Guangxi. On yihai day, Yishan and others were told to soothe foreign merchants. That month, Jizhou and nine other Shanxi districts and Horinger received poor-harvest granary loans. Suqian's flooded beach rents were remitted or deferred.

In summer, month 4, jichou, Yuqian again became Imperial Commissioner for Zhejiang coastal defense. The British took Guangzhou's outer batteries. On jiachen day, Kuizhao retired ill and Sekejin'e took Rites. 202 men including Long Qirui received jinshi degrees with differing ranks. On xinhai day, princes, grand secretaries, councilors, and ministers joined Punishments to try Yilibu. On guichou day, with Guangzhou besieged, Yishan's memorial opened trade to the British. That month, Shuozhou and five other Shanxi districts had overdue levies deferred.

In month 5, bingchen, British ships entered Zhejiang waters and Yuqian was told to tighten every port. On guihai day, Deng Tingzhen and Lin Zexu were exiled to Yili. On guiyou day, British ships left Humen. Muzhang'a left colonial affairs management and Saishang'a replaced him. Staff Commissioner and Revenue Minister Long Wen died in the field. On gengchen day, Jingzheng took Revenue, Saishang'a Works, and En Gui colonial affairs. On renwu day, Wu Wenrong took Jiangxi and Qian Baochen Hunan. Yixing became Suiyuan City general.

In month 6, Qi's regulations for merchant ships to Tianjin and elsewhere were approved. On gengyin day, Yilibu lost office and was sent to courier stations to redeem his guilt. Yishan's staged troop withdrawal was approved. On wuxu day, Qishan was sentenced to death. On guimao day, the Henan Xiaonan Office river broke. On xinmao day, Wen Chong lost rank but kept canal-east transport; Niu Jian faced severe review.

On xinwei day, with the river in flood, Niu Jian was ordered to relocate people and relieve disaster. On jimao day, Lan Xang sent tribute. On gengchen day, the British took Xiamen; Jiang Jiyun and others were killed. Ruan Fuxuan succeeded his father as Vietnam's king and Bao Qing was sent to invest him.

In month 8, guiwei, Gui Lun became Rehe commander. On dinghai day, the British attacked Zhejiang. On gengyin day, Zhu Xiang became canal-east transport governor-general. On xinmao day, longevity day, the Emperor paid respects at the Empress Dowager's palace. At the Hall of Supreme Harmony princes, officials, Mongol envoys, and foreign princes congratulated. Wen Chong lost office and wore the cangue at the riverbank. Wang Ding acted as canal-east transport governor-general. The British left Xiamen. On dingyou day, the British hit Shuang'ao and Shipu in Zhejiang and Yuqian drove them off. Yiliang was sent to Fujian to investigate military affairs. Liang Baochang acted as Guangdong governor. On gengzi day, Zhao Bingyan became Hubei governor. On xinchou day, the British again invaded Zhejiang in force. On wushen day, the British retook Dinghai; Wang Xipeng, Zheng Guohong, Ge Yunfei, and others were killed. Yuqian and Yu Buyun faced severe board review. That month, Huazhou, Daliji, and eight Henan districts including Suizhou had flood taxes remitted.

In month 9, yimao, the British took Zhenhai; Yuqian was killed and Yu Buyun fled. Yijing became Displaying-Might General with Hala'a and Hu Chao as commissioners for Zhejiang defense. Yiliang became Imperial Commissioner with Yan Bozhao and Liu Hong'ao for Zhejiang defense. Niu Jian acted at Liang-Jiang and E Shun'an at Henan. On dingsi day, Wen Wei was sent to Zhejiang as staff commissioner; Hu Chao stayed at Tianjin. Te Yishun was sent to Zhejiang as staff commissioner; Hala'a stayed at Shanhaiguan. Qi Junzao joined the Grand Council. Niu Jian became Liang-Jiang governor-general. On xinyou day, the British took Ningbo prefecture. On jisi day, the Emperor reviewed Firearms Camp troops. That month, Liaoyang and five other Fengtian districts received flood rations.

In winter, month 10, wuzi, Senggelinqin and others were sent to inspect Tianjin's river mouth. On xinmao day, British ships entered Taiwan's harbor and Da Hong'a drove them off. Wang Delu was sent to Taiwan for joint suppression. That month, Huarong and Yuezhou and ten Jiangxi counties including Dehua received flood relief. Extra relief went to Mianyang and eight other Hubei units, Saragel, and fifteen Jiangsu counties and guards including Shangyuan, with quota levies remitted. Wuwei and eleven other Anhui districts received flood rations and housing funds, with quota levies remitted.

In month 11, gengwu, Cheng Yucai acted as Jiangsu governor. Yushu tribes' snow disaster brought a two-year remission of levied silver. On wuyin day, the British took Yuyao and re-entered Cixi. That month, Shangyuan and Jiangning received disaster relief.

In month 12, wuzi, Yan Bozhao lost office and Yang Guozhen became Min-Zhe governor-general. On jichou day, Liang Ehan became Shanxi governor. On guisi day, the British took Fenghua. On renyin day, Zhong Renjie took Chongyang and Yu Tai was ordered to suppress him. Cheng Yucai became Jiangsu governor. On bingwu day, British ships raided Zhapu. On wushen day, British ships hit Tamsui and Jilong and Da Hong'a drove them off. That month, Xinyang received disaster relief. Xiangfu and five other Henan counties and Shangyuan and nine other Jiangsu counties received extended relief. Suizhou and Zhecheng poor received seed and ration loans and Huaining granary grain was sold fairly. Nanchang and twenty-one other Jiangxi counties had overdue levies deferred, with Hengpu and Pudong saltern duties deferred.

In year 22, month 1, bingchen, Yang Guozhen retired ill; Yiliang took Min-Zhe and Liang Baochang took Guangdong. On jiazi day, Qiying moved from Mukden to Guangzhou general and Xi'en acted. On jisi day, Chongyang rebels took Tongshan and Yu Tai defeated them. On dingchou day, Chongyang was recovered and Zhong Renjie was captured. That month, Wuwei and eleven other Anhui units, Liaoyang and five other Fengtian districts, and Xinmin and three other counties received relief. Suzhou and twenty-one other Anhui units and Haining and six other Zhejiang districts received flood rations. Flood seed loans went to Dehua and six other Jiangxi counties, Wuling, Jiayu and eight other Hubei units, five Shaanxi districts including Jiazhou, Saragel granary grain, and Jiangsu disaster-camp pay. Haining and eight other Zhejiang districts had flood quota levies remitted or deferred.

In month 2, bingxu, Lin Zexu was kept at Yili exile. On bingchen day, Yijing's attack on Ningbo failed. Yilibu was freed to go to the Zhejiang camp. Qiying acted as Hangzhou general. Wang Ding took leave. Qi Shen again became staff commissioner for Zhejiang military affairs. On bingwu day, Qiying became Imperial Commissioner to hold Hangzhou with Te Yishun; Liu Yunke joined defense; Yijing was charged to guard every coastal port. That month, Liaoyang and other Mukden districts and Shangyuan and seven other Jiangsu counties received relief.

In month 3, renzi, the Emperor visited the Southern Park. On guichou day, the Emperor hunted; the next day as well. On dingsi day, the Emperor returned to Yuanming Garden. Enteheng'e died; Funiyang'a took Shaanxi-Gansu and Bichang took Shaanxi. Qingchang became Yili staff commissioner. That month, Zhengzhou's waterlogged land had overdue levies remitted or deferred.

In summer, month 4, guiwei, the British raided Taiwan again and Da Hong'a drove them off. Da Hong'a received the additional title Grand Guardian of the Heir Apparent. On jichou day, the British left Ningbo. On jiawu day, the Emperor prayed for rain at the Black Dragon Pool shrine. On yiwei day, the British took Zhapu and Wei Fengjia was killed. On gengzi day, Yu Buyun lost office and was arrested. On bingwu day, Zhong Renjie was executed. That month, Fenghuang and four other Hunan districts received seed loans for garrison and Miao tenants, and Jizhou and thirteen other Shanxi districts received granary loans. Yangqu and Saragel had overdue grain levies deferred.

In month 5, jiyou, Grand Secretary Wang Ding died suddenly. On bingchen day, Tang Jinzhao was demoted to Court of Imperial Entertainments director. On dingsi day, Tang Jinzhao retired. On wuwu day, Yishan lost Left Censor-in-chief rank for false memorials; Qi and Liang Baochang lost rank but stayed on. On jiwei day, Sekejin'e died and En Gui took Rites. Jiluntai became colonial affairs minister. Kuizhao became Left Censor-in-chief. On renxu day, the British took Baoshan and Chen Huacheng was killed. Qiying and Yilibu were sent to Jiangsu to join Niu Jian in defense. On dingmao day, the British took Shanghai and Yang Qing'en was killed. Saishang'a became Imperial Commissioner with Ne'erjing'e for defense. That month, Shanyang and two Huai'an counties and guards received poor-harvest seed loans.

In month 6, wuyin new moon, there was a solar eclipse. Chongyang and four other Hubei units disturbed by bandits had quota levies remitted or deferred. On xinmao day, Wen Qing became Urga commissioner. On renchen day, Dinghai and eleven other disturbed Zhejiang counties had quota levies remitted or deferred. On guisi day, British ships raided Jingkou. On bingchen day, British ships raided Zhenjiang and Qi Shen fled. On dingyou day, the British took Zhenjiang and Hailing was killed.

In autumn, month 7, jiayin, British ships raided Nanjing. Yilibu and others were told to negotiate terms. Yijing was ordered to station at Changzhou. On jiwei day, Qiying reported ceasefire talks with Morrison and other British officers. The court said it put the people first and ordered the agreement settled properly. On guihai day, Qiying asked to seal a treaty with British officers. The court cited countless lives at stake and granted the request. On gengwu day, the Jiangnan Taobei Office river broke. That month, Barkul received earthquake relief.

In month 8, wuyin, Qiying reported treaty trade at Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Ningbo, and Shanghai. On wuzi day, Lin Qing lost rank for river negligence but stayed on. Jingzheng and Liao Hongquan were sent to Jiangnan to survey river works. That month, Barkul received earthquake rebuilding loans.

On guihai day, Yijing and Wen Wei were called to Beijing. Qi Shen returned to Sichuan as regional commander. On jiaxu day, Yilibu was told to negotiate treaty-port taxes. On yihai day, Bichang took Fuzhou general and Li Xingyuan took Shaanxi.

On jiawu, Yishan, Yijing, and Wenwei lost office and were condemned to death; Te Yishun and Qi Shen were demoted but kept on duty. On yiwei, Jingzheng became associate Grand Secretary; Engui took Personnel and Lin Kui acted at Rites. On wuxu, Prince Qing Yicai was disranked; Jixing, an out-of-eight-banners duke, was disranked and sent to Mukden. That month Taoyuan and Shuyang in Jiangsu received flood relief. Jiangling and three other Hubei counties and three Baode-area Shanxi districts received ration grain. Niuzhuang and other Fengtian places received lent ration grain. Haizhou and four other Jiangsu districts and eight Lizhou-area Hunan districts had taxes remitted or deferred.

In month 11, dingwei, Gu Qing was called to Beijing and Goleminka took Kobdo. Sheng Gui was called to Beijing and Le Bin replaced him at Urga. Meng Bao was called to Beijing and Haipu replaced him in Tibet. Pan Xi'en became Jiangnan river conservancy governor-general. Huicheng became Hedong river conservancy governor-general. On bingchen, Zhou Tianjue went home to mourn and Liao Hongquan acted as grain transport governor-general. On jiazi, Yiliang was sent to investigate Da Hong'a and others for killing foreigners without cause. On dingmao, Niu Jian was condemned to death. On jiaxu, six war-hit Jiangsu counties including Dantu received grain and repair funds, and thirteen districts including Tongzhou had taxes remitted by degree. That month Xiaoxian and Xuzhou Guard received flood ration grain. Chun'an and two other Zhejiang counties had old and new taxes remitted or deferred.

In month 12, xinsi, Liao Hongquan went to Beijing and Li Xiangfen acted as grain transport governor-general. On jichou, Tongyong Garrison was set up at Lutai under commander Xiang Rong. On gengyin, Cheng Yucai was called to Beijing and Sun Shanbao became Jiangsu governor. On yiwei, ill Tuohunbu left office and Cheng Yucai took Shandong. On wuxu, Yu Buyun was again tried by the grand secretaries, ministers, and censors and was executed. On jihai, Liang Baochang took Shandong and Cheng Yucai Guangdong. That month three Fujian districts including Fengshi received flood grain and repair funds.

In year 23, month 1, xinhai, Li Kan and Cheng Gang joined Pan Xi'en supervising Southern River works. On renzi, Pottinger returned to Hong Kong and Morrison stayed to negotiate. Yilibu and others were ordered to handle treaty commerce. Li Xiangfen and Qiying were ordered to handle north-of-the-river recovery. That month Xiaoxian and Taoyuan were relieved and six districts including Shuyang received ration grain. Jiangling and two other Hubei districts and Lizhou and Dongting camps received flood seed and ration loans.

In month 2, yiwei, Yilibu died; Qi took over treaty tax rules. On dingyou, Yixiang became Canton governor and Lupu replaced him at Urga. On xinchou, Yixing took Urga and Lupu Suiyuan City. That month flooded Jiangzhou garrison troops in Hubei received lent granary grain.

In month 3, gengxu, Qiying became Imperial Commissioner for Jiangsu-Zhejiang commerce. Bi Chang acted as Liangjiang governor-general. On dingsi, the Emperor tested Hanlin and Household officials; Wan Qingli and four others ranked first and the rest were graded. On yichou, Lupu took the Plain Red Mongol command, Yixing Suiyuan City, Gui Lun Urga, and Qishan returned as Rehe commandant. On bingyin, Wenwei returned as Gucheng detachment commander. Yijing returned as Yarkand assistant commissioner. On dingmao, Yiliang said Da Hong'a and Yao Ying had no merit; both were stripped and arrested. Soon Da Hong'a and Yao Ying were spared punishment. That month six Shanxi districts including Jiangzhou, flooded Jiangzhou stores, Jiangning and camp troops, and five Fenghuang-area Hunan districts received disaster loans.

On dingchou, Chen Qingyong's impeachment again cost Qishan, Wenwei, and Yijing their posts. Ill Kui Zhao left; Tedeng'e took the left censorate and Saying'a became Rehe commandant. On gengzi, Qiying was ordered to negotiate trade with Britain. On wuchen, ill Yiliang left; Liu Yunke took Fujian-Zhejiang, Wu Qijun Zhejiang, and Lu Fei'en Hunan.

In month 6, yihai, Zeng Ruzhu rebelled at Wugang, killed Xu Guangbi, and Wu Qijun was sent to suppress him. On jiawu, Zeng Ruzhu was executed.

In autumn, month 7, yisi, the Yellow River broke at Zhongmou Jiubao and Huicheng faced severe review. Qiying's trade-tax plan was approved, to start in Guangzhou. Jingzheng and He Rulin were sent to survey the Eastern River instead. On bingwu, E Shun'an was ordered to relieve flooded river districts.

Zhong Xiang became Hedong river conservancy governor-general. On bingxu, Fafeng'a was called to Beijing and Dexing became Xining commissioner. On dinghai, Liao Hongquan went to Henan to co-supervise river works. On jichou, Lin Qing returned to supervise Eastern River works. On gengyin, Jingzheng and others were told to plan paper currency. On jiawu, Wu Qijun took Yunnan and Guan Yuqun Zhejiang.

In month 8, yisi, Cheng Maocai was again told to relieve flooded Anhui districts. That month three Shaanxi counties including Mian received flood and hail relief.

In month 9, jiawu, Li Xiangfen acted as grain transport governor-general with third-rank top. That month Fushan in Shandong received flood relief. Twenty-seven Zhili districts including Jingzhou and Fushan in Shandong had principal and miscellaneous taxes remitted or deferred.

In winter, month 10, jiyou, Qiying finished trade talks and returned to Liangjiang for recovery and Shanghai commerce while Qi handled Guangdong. On gengxu, Qishan returned as Tibet commissioner. On jiazi, Da Hong'a returned as Hami commissioner. That month Taihe and two other Anhui counties and Ke'lan in Shanxi received flood and hail relief. Taihe and three other Anhui counties and four places including Qiqihar received failure ration loans. Disaster taxes were remitted or deferred across Liaoyang and five other Fengtian districts, Shenyang and two other places, four Qiqihar-area posts, twenty-seven Linqing-area Shandong districts, thirty-seven Sizhou-area Anhui districts, seven Ke'lan-area Shanxi districts, and six Lizhou-area Hunan districts.

In month 11, jisi new moon, there was a solar eclipse. On jimao, Wang Zhi became Zhejiang governor. On renwu, Cheng Maocai took Zhejiang and Wang Zhi Anhui. On dingyou the Emperor prayed for snow at Dagao Hall. That month Shuyang and Dahe Guard received disaster relief. Fifteen Jiangxi counties including Nanchang and nine Suide-area Shaanxi districts received seed, ration, and granary loans. Xinhe and three other Zhili counties and sixty-eight Gaoyou-area Jiangsu districts had flood and drought taxes remitted or deferred.

In month 12, xinchou, Italy trade rules were settled. On jiachen, Liang Baochang took Zhejiang and Chong'en Shandong. On bingwu it snowed. On dingsi, Liu Yunke was ordered to handle Ningbo trade. Ill Gong Shouzheng left the Ministry of Rites and Chen Guanjun replaced him. That month sixteen Suizhou-area Henan districts had flood taxes remitted or deferred.

On gengxu, after the Zhongmou dam failed again, Lin Kui and Liao Hongquan were demoted to seventh rank but kept at the works, Zhong Xiang was demoted but kept as Eastern River governor-general, and E Shun'an lost rank to third. Tedeng'e took Rites, Wen Qing the left censorate, Chen Guanjun Works, Li Zongfang Rites, and Du Shoutian the left censorate. On jiayin, Muzhang'a stayed in Beijing to govern. After Cheng Yucai reported an American envoy wanted Tianjin audience and trade rules, Qiying went to Guangdong with him to settle U.S. and other trade. On dingmao, transit land tax was cut by thirty percent. That month three Haizhou-area Jiangsu districts gave colonist ration grain.

In month 3, renshen, Qiying became Imperial Commissioner for trade recovery and Cheng Yucai was told to stop the American envoy coming to Beijing. On bingxu, Zhong Xiang reported river follow-up and the Emperor said losing one man was his own fault. See to it well." That month, Pingding and ten other Shanxi districts received poor-harvest granary loans.

On xinhai day, Wan Gongzhen was sent to relieve flood victims in Wuling and other Hunan counties. On bingchen day, Wang Zhaochen was exiled to Xinjiang. On jiwei day, Lin Zexu left office for illness; Cheng Yucai took Yunnan-Guizhou and Zhang Rizhao Yunnan. Dai Xi retired with a reduced third-rank hat. That month flood rations went to five Jiangxi counties including Dehua and nine Hunan districts including Lizhou. Jiangsu's twenty-two districts including Chuansha had new and old quotas remitted or deferred.

On yihai day, the dowager's coffin was installed at Cining Palace. The Emperor mourned in a shed, sleeping on rush mats on the ground. Princes and ministers begged him to return to the palace; he refused. On jiashen day, the coffin was moved to Yinghui Hall in Qichun Garden. Thereafter the Emperor kept mourning quarters at Shende Hall. On yiyou day, Li Zhenhu left office and Chen Fuen became minister of punishments. On dinghai day, Xinning rebels fled into Guangxi and Zheng Zuchen sent troops against them.

On gengzi day, the Emperor performed great mourning rites before the dowager's coffin at Yinghui Hall. On jiachen day, the Emperor performed the monthly mourning rites before the coffin. On yisi day, the dowager's tomb was named Changxi Mausoleum.

On bingwu day, the Emperor fell ill. On dingwei day, the Emperor's illness turned critical. Zaiquan, Zaiyuan, Duanhua, Sengge Rinchen, Mujangga, Saishanga, He Rulin, Chen Fuen, Ji Zhichang, and Weng Qing opened the sealed box and read: "Establish the fourth imperial son as crown prince." That day the Emperor died at Shende Hall in the Yuanming Garden. A vermillion edict enfeoffed the sixth son Yixin as prince.

The annalists say Xuanzong was frugal and magnanimous—a true keeper of the throne. Foreign trade stirred conflict and war. Beside earlier frontier troubles, these were in a different order. Leading ministers began harsh, then grew timid, leaving the ruler sleepless with care. So it was said: there was a ruler but no ministers—men who could flatter but not save the state. The dynasty's slide toward ruin began here. Alas, how far it has fallen!
